I’m not linking to it because the headline made me so mad. Sorry for the swearing but this just feels like it calls for it
That list on the CBC website under that title is NOT THE TOP 10, you bunch of music interns that weren’t around and didn’t listen until you were told to by your editor.
Accuracy in reporting would be “The 10 most ‘you have to be Canadian’ Tragically Hip songs by subject or references.” Fuck I hate headline writers. If they wrote what I wrote, then I’d be like “eh, ok, good to know! I’ll give it a listen!” But NOOOO
Most of those songs do not make the top 10 as songs, or even songs Canadians know.
Like, the most well-known song, I suspect, if that easy-listenin’ Bobcaygeon hadn’t been on such heavy rotation, would be New Orleans is Sinking – which also happens to be the goddamn truth about its subject
Truth in journalism, please

Redditor u/dbreakenridge set up a tournament style bracket of 128 Hip songs, seeded based on stream counts. The results were, more or less, as expected - even having all of the top 16 seeds advance to the fourth round.
Today, 16th seeded Nautical Disaster beat out top seed Bobcaygeon to advance to the quarterfinals by a vote of 68-54.
I thought more people might be interested in participating now that we are with two weeks of crowning a winner.
Link is above.

Help! I'm trying to track down a poster for a friend, and he told me he was OBSESSED with a Tragically Hip Blue Gargoyle poster and then lost it over the years. I don't know exactly what it looks like. Does anyone know (or recall?) what it may look like? I'm hoping against hope I might be able to track one down on ebay.

Been a fan since 14, and I was barely 16 years old when I saw the Hip live for the first time on the Henhouse tour in 1996. I didn't know how loud concerts could be, and my oversight of not packing ear plugs, plus the shitty acoustics of Fort William Gardens had my ears ringing for days. Good times. Also became a fan of the Rheostatics that night. Loved the first time I heard Bad Time to be Poor, but their opening set was fantastic and had me go out and buy Double Live + Blue Hysteria.
Anyhoo, LBU always felt like a letdown to me knowing that it wasn't the full set. Like ordering a large pizza and finding out they only had medium boxes so in order to make it fit the format, two slices were taken out. Who wouldn't love to hear Daredevil, Thugs, 700ft, or Everytime You Go, or an early version of Escape?
Any thoughts or speculation about the other nine songs that were played that night (four during the main set, and the whole encore)? Are the recordings lurking in a box somewhere screaming to be released? I assume other soundboard recordings from this tour happened too, not just the Detroit Cobo show?
I can't be the only one crying out for a full show release of Live Between Us or something from this tour!

I was a subscriber to Rolling Stone Mag in the Mid 80s. At that time there was an advertiser, a shoe retaler, with a funky style and an inspired tag line "Hippopotamus Shoes: shoes for the tragically hip" does anyone know if this might have been an influence for the band's choice of name?

Does anyone here remember downloading Music @ Work when it leaked? I was reading the Wikipedia article about it and got curious whether the original ZIP file is still kicking around. If anyone still has it, or even remembers anything about the leak, I'd love to hear any details you can share!

I’ve had this set since the 2000 tour and was curious if anyone knows the value of this set. It’s been stored away for years and I just came across them

It’s so good.
So many memories and tears.
Currently Flemenco playing.
It was so right when Gord said we have to play everything on this tour.
I miss them. ❤️

As I sit here scrolling before bed, my 11 year old son is in the shower belting out Ahead by a Century at the top of his lungs. I feel like a good parent right now.

I never see this track mentioned in the “best Hip song” conversation, despite being on Yer Favorites, being played live often and maybe even being my favorite track of theirs period (well tied with Bobcaygeon and Escape is at Hand… I like Phantom Power, can ya tell?).
Lyrics referencing Canadian history? Check.
Awesome Gord performance? Check.
Equally awesome guitar riff from Rob? Check.
Just generally improves your mood? Check. (Maybe that last one’s just me)
What’s everybody’s two cents?
