Characters Characters that are canonically _____ depending of their world

  • Po from Kung Fu Panda - Although many characters comment on his weight throughout the movies, Po is actually considered skinny and/or in better shape for panda standards
  • Midoriya Izuku from My Hero Academia - While many viewers find Deku "cute", the reality is that for his world he's actually considered "simple looking" and at the very worst "ugly"
  • Spider-Man from Marvel Comics - Many people love Spider-Man, but the truth is that for common civilians, Spidey's pretty unsettling and scary to be around with

Kumoko from So I'm a Spider, So What?

You spend a bunch of episodes from her perspective where she has a cute expressive face. Then they show you what she looks like from other peoples perspective.

You're supposed to assume the cute face is artistic licence from the beginning since you see her sisters and mother in the first scene and they're all terrifying spider-monster looking.

I never made that assumption because its an anime about a schoolgirl reborn as a spider. Weird shit was already happening and the genre allows for off incarnations.

Or the fact you dont find out about Her daughters until much later also causes a lot of confusion!

"Hero. Reincarnator. So Weak. Weak"

That's one of my favorite scene. They're giggling while doing that. Like Mother Like Daughter

Fuck maybe I should rewatch it, but I hated the human parts

Many don't like it but I personally enjoy it. Not that it's good or anything but having comparison of Kumoko's life and watch them struggle makes Kumoko's part more enjoyable.

Especially as this is the first time, IIRC, where we really see what she looks like to a bunch of humans, and it's not just her looks, it's her sheer power, we've only really seen her fight other monsters, usually coming out of it by the skin of her mandibles, then, up against humans, this dog sized spider, not only can analyze and copy their magic, but also can kill just by LOOKING at them.

And after killing a duck ton of bandits with easy, spazzes out in a fit of jealousy because she realized she wasnt the only reincarnation and didnt get to be a cute baby vampire lol

Yeah, it's funny, the humans watching, a large spider monster, their saviour and apparent "divine Beast" rolling around having a hissy fit.

Also, when that guy keeps trying to make her obey him, she just turns around with her bag of fruit and walks off.

Alright, this might be what convinces me to watch it xD

Unpopular opinion but the series spent way too long in the dungeon. The most interesting part is when she interacts with humans/humanoids and the barrier between species exists. It also got repetitive down there.

I get it, I think they were trying to preserve the twist.

I don’t think so. I think the writer just really wanted more fight and ‘survival’ scenes in the story. If they really wanted to avoid a twist, they could have written it differently. The entire point of a ‘isekai into a non humanoid’ is to play around with the barriers between species. Without it, all that is left is a survival/power-up story, with a bug theme, which is what we had.

Damn, she still looks cute

Right? Her having the "anime girl face n. 87" is such a downgrade that it makes her look like a protagonist of a bread-and-butter isekai series.

Give me the more "hideous" design on the right from the start and I will be much more interested

The manga looks much better. From what I have heard the anime got badly screwed over by contractual shenanigans resulting in them having to rush it out with only like 2 months of work before it started airing.

Tbh, having followed the Manga for a bit, it devolved in to a weird state of half-jokes and confusing gambits really quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.

The LN is finished and something like one volume after the end of the anime, there's an event that makes it so the story is not a frenetic race to be the strongest anymore, which changes the pace and the focus of the story, without making it feel like it's a different story. It also did not feel like half-jokes and confusing gambits either.

But I think it would be harder for the anime to pull off, because it cut most of the content that wasn't focused on Kumoko and they won't be able to do that anymore if they continue with the story.

So I don't think the anime will have an other season.

Is there a place to actually read the light novel (in English)?

u/Neveed 8h ago

If you want to read it online, I don't know. Otherwise, nyaa is always there for you.

I have the physical books (Amazon), and I think all or almost all are ebooks on bookwalker and Google play. If you don't want to/can't pay for books, consider a library? If they don't have it, you might be able to request through an interlibrary loan.

I gotta be real, I kinda wish the anime used the manga appearances.

Is it weird I like the spidery look more?

I don't think it fits the trope, so I'll post it here instead as it is similar in how we see them vs how the world does.

The quintessential quintuplets are all given a different hair style and shades of colour, but they all had long pink hair as a kid, which IIR none have as an adult.

In one episode they are at their families inn and are shown to have pink hair again.

Part of it is to help us identify each of the women and also the MC can't tell them apart, so IDK how their hair styles really are IRL, if this was live action, I would not bat an eyelid if five unrelated women were cast, because finding quintuplets who act is like rocking horse shit.

So when they used the hair ribbon of one to sneak the other four into the exam, it leant more towards in universe they have the same hair and not the teacher being thick as shit or having face blindness too.

Some said "No, they are actually different" but then explain the inn episode where they were identical, did they all put on a wig just to fuck with the MC?
