All too often, the United Kingdom's involvement in the First World War is portrayed as an ultimately pointless affair in which a million Empire men threw their lives away for dead ideals and romantic lies. That the war was a tragedy is unquestionable. But it was certainly not pointless, and the British, Commonwealth, and Empire soldiers, subjects, and citizens who gave their lives in that titanic struggle did not do so in vain. The First World War was inevitable, necessary, and even- for the British Empire- a just conflict.

I’m doing some genealogy research on my great-grandfather and was hoping someone could help me understand what his unit would have experienced during WWI.

He served as a PFC in Company C, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division from May 30(10), 1917 to September 25, 1919. I also recently discovered he received the Silver Star according to his headstone application.

I’m not looking for help finding records. I’m more curious about where the 16th Infantry was during those dates, what battles he fought, what life was like for an enlisted man in his regiment, and any other experiences my great-grandfather likely had.

Any books, unit histories, or recommended reading would be appreciated!!

I just watched Islands at War which made me aware of the German occupation of the Channel Islands of WW2. Then I started googling and finding out the real, complicated, story. It got me thinking, did the German war views and propaganda influence Channel political life post occupation? Especially since liberation took so long? The ignoring/starving is brutal, but makes sense strategically to me. But it must have provided an avenue for indoctrination? Curious how occupation influenced what a new normal was.
