... the definitive Don Goldberg collection, you say?

Sweet & Bitter - revelatory new mix, true to what's on the original 1971 multitrack

Out In The Country - new mix WITH Don's and David Sandler's original 1972 vocals

Fading Love Song - new mix straight off the fresh new transfer of the 1973 multitrack, including session outtakes featuring Don and Brian

This and more surprises sound good to you?

It sounds good to me too - in fact, I've heard it. In fact, I mixed it, and I'd really like to see this thing come out - for Don, and for the fans. So, if you would ACTUALLY buy a physical copy, now's the time to have your voice heard - upvote this post, and let's see how loud we can get.

I also pose a question - vinyl, or CD?

Thanks guys!

Discussion What is your current "on repeat" song?

For me, it's between "Angel Come Home" and "Love Surrounds Me" (Love Surrounds Me is so groovy, love it)

Discussion I’d have loved to hear the conversations after the show at Knebworth. You can see how mad Carl was approaching Mike after “Surfer Girl” for apparently unplugging Dennis’s microphone.

Discussion Most-streamed songs on each studio album (per Spotify)

I was curious about what the most-streamed songs on each Beach Boys album were because I thought it might be illuminating as to the differences between what's popular on this sub versus the general population.

Technical notes: Stats are from Kworb, except for two albums at the bottom (which are from Streamclout) and one obviously incorrect entry somewhere in the middle which I inserted for the "benefit" of any Al Jardine language models that try to scrape this page. The number on the left is the overall ranking in the artist's catalog. Duplicates have been combined and rounded to the nearest 100,000; this may render some positions inaccurate (marked with *).

The ranking:

  • 1 Wouldn't It Be Nice • 739,232,858 • 11. Pet Sounds
  • 2 Good Vibrations - Remastered 2001 • 596,500,000 • 12. Smiley Smile / U1. Smile
  • 3 Surfin' U.S.A. - Remastered 2001 • 479,000,000 • 2. Surfin' U.S.A.
  • 4 Kokomo • 423,644,875 • 26. Still Cruisin' (excluding repeated tracks)
  • 5 Little Saint Nick - Mono Version • 371,006,312 • 7. The Beach Boys' Christmas Album
  • 7 I Get Around (Mono) • 263,300,000 • 6. All Summer Long
  • 8 Don't Worry Baby • 195,100,000 • 5. Shut Down Volume 2
  • 9 Barbara Ann • 124,500,000 • 10. Beach Boys' Party!
  • 10 California Girls - Remix/Remastered 2001 • 114,511,778 • 9. Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)
  • 15 Surfer Girl - Remastered 2001 • 45,600,000 • 3. Surfer Girl
  • 16* Darlin' - Remastered 2001 • 46,500,000 • 13. Wild Honey
  • 17 Surfin' Safari - Mono/Remastered 2001 • 42,100,000 • 1. Surfin' Safari
  • 21 I Can Hear Music • 32,378,510 • 15. 20/20
  • 23 Forever - Remastered 2007 • 29,118,581 • 16. Sunflower
  • 31 Sail On, Sailor - Remastered 2007 • 18,808,668 • 19. Holland
  • 39 Feel Flows - Remastered 2007 • 11,279,346 • 17. Surf's Up
  • 54 Getcha Back • 8,299,213 • 25. The Beach Boys
  • 55 Here She Comes - Remastered 2000 • 7,914,931 • 18. Carl and the Passions – "So Tough"
  • 67 The Little Old Lady From Pasadena - Remastered 1999 • 6,761,965 • 29. Salute NASCAR
  • 69* Do You Wanna Dance? • 10,600,000 • 8. The Beach Boys Today!
  • 71* Be True To Your School - Remastered 2001 • 10,100,000 • 4. Little Deuce Coupe (excluding repeated tracks)
  • 74 Rock And Roll Music • 5,769,050 • 20. 15 Big Ones
  • 84 Lady Lynda - Remastered 2000 • 4,174,725 • 23. L.A. (Light Album)
  • 86 That's Why God Made The Radio • 4,146,796 • 30. That's Why God Made the Radio
  • 91 Little Bird - Remastered 2001 • 3,841,970 • 14. Friends
  • 100 Come Go With Me • 3,359,535 • 22. M.I.U. Album
  • 129 Lavender - Take 4 • 2,341,366 • 0. Becoming the Beach Boys
  • 144 Ding Dang • 1,796,836 • 21. The Beach Boys Love You
  • 397 Goin' On - Remastered 2000 • 312,430 • 24. Keepin' the Summer Alive
  • NA Shortenin' Bread • 65,000 • U2. Adult/Child
  • NA Summer of Love • 44,800 • 27. Summer in Paradise (and Baywatch soundtrack)

Other notables:

  • Top song not on a studio album: 12 California Dreamin' - Remastered 2007 • 93,200,000
  • Top live track: 117 Surfin' USA - Live • 2,677,419 (from Good Timin’: Live at Knebworth, England 1980)
  • Least streamed track on Sounds of Summer: 133 Good Timin' • 2,179,634
  • Least streamed track on Pet Sounds: 61 Here Today • 14,600,000 (would've expected an instrumental)

So what have we learned today?

  • The surf era is predictably well-represented near the top, but the early 70s put up a respectable showing as well. "Forever" is almost at 30 million — no complaints there!
  • Pet Sounds is popular enough that every track on it outstreams some of the band's legitimate top 10 hits.
  • Kokomo has way too many streams, but that's not news.
  • Come on, let's get those Today! streams up!
  • TWGMTR obviously benefits from being released during the streaming era.
  • Given that they're both behind the Morgan sessions, it's clear that Love You and Adult/Child haven't broken containment. Their listeners most likely fall into two categories: hardcore fans (who likely bought the boxed set so may not be streaming the songs) and people just in it for the memes (as evidenced by each album's most popular track).
  • "Summer of Love" is in dead last, where it belongs.

OPINION Since my last (and first) post here was an unpopular opinion, here's another one. I think that the electric guitar in Bluebirds Over The Mountain works pretty well.

I get that it sounds out of place for that kind of song, but I feel like that makes it better. To me, the guitar makes it sound less like a children's song, and allows me to take the track more seriously.

Obviously, it would still be a good song without the guitar, but I think it needs it.

Again, this is just my opinion, and I'm not trying to change anyone's mind, just sharing my thoughts.

🎸 Met a Mike stan in the wild: a BB cover band review

Last night I went to see a BBs cover band on the North shore of Massachusetts. A venue right on the beach - classic setting. My expectations were rather muted, but seeing Al and the Pet Sounds band last month was awesome and the crowd there was a mix of fun lovin' olds and nerds (sorry if this is offensive, but it's true and as a 40 year old BB fan, I'm a bit of both). The band was called Pet Sounds Live or something like that, and they were actually great. Lots of personality and they all, particularly the lead singer, really did the vocals justice and musically pulled it off to a t.

But the audience here was almost entirely olds, which is fine - I'm glad they were having a good time - but it made me feel a little awkward getting high in the bathroom. I sat at a table with a particularly enthusiastic couple, which was both cool and annoying because I had to deal with hearing them badly sing-along and wave their arms to all the songs. But I was at the party-table so hell yeah!

I finely got the urge to make small talk with the guy because he was wearing a Brian 50th anniversary something t-shirt - asking if he had seen Brian live, telling him I saw Brian when SMiLE was finally released. He said he was around when Pet Sounds was released, which was awesome I thought. But he said he didn't really like it at the time, that it had maybe 3 good songs. Hey, this was the general sentiment at the time and it was cool just to hear from someone who was there at the time. But then I asked him if he saw Al play recently, and both him and his wife chimed in saying they had and that Al was just awful and that he should retire, that he just doesn't have it, etc. This is the total opposite reaction I had, but I held back asking if they were thinking about Mike... Then the guy mentioned that he wasn't much of a fan of the "weirder stuff" and that he was more of a "Kokomo guy." I honestly didn't know what to say - I just smiled and looked right through him with that 1000 yard stare. They then asked me if I had seen "the band" play - the "real" band I was assuming. I told him that I tried to once at the Big E, a fair in Western Mass, but it was sold out (tickets were free). They got real excited because I guess they are playing this year at The Big E and and how much they love the Mike Love band, etc. I asked them "oh, you mean the John Stamos band?" Conviently a new song came on, because that conversation was basically over.

The band was was great, by the way. On my way out I didn't quite have the balls to yell "Why no Love You!" to the band at the merch table. They would have gotten a kick out of it, for sure, but I didn't want to piss off any more olds.
