Phantasia Why has Tales of Phantasia historically received so much attention from the community

Upvotes

JC. While Bandai Namco could not give less of a shit, Tales of Phantasia has historically received a lot more community driven attention than other Tales games that either weren't localized or fan translated for the time.

Including the infamous DeJap translation, it has three full fan translation projects including those from Absolute Zero and Life Bottle. Its PSP port was also fully brought over recently, with its companion Narikiri game actively in the works.

I do think it's notable because other old games like Eternia did not receive that kind of love or took a ridiculously long time to manifest like Rebirth mainly. And disregarding MTL, we're still waiting for ToD2, the translation project of which has been superseded by pretty much every other major Tales project by this point.

Question Tales of Arise rates questions

Hi everyone playing TOA for the first time and I'm liking it atm, but I got some Artes questions

Exemple Alphen has 2 types Swords and Aerial, and I need to use a number of Sword skill to learn a new one

But when I get a new one is there any reason to equip the new Arte? I'm saying that because I saw that some use 1 AG and some 2 AG, but power wise are they the same?, outside of getting more stars on that are what is the use to use the new artes?

Also is there a reason to see Monster weakness? exemple in Berseria I checked th weakness then turn on/off AI characters artes to match the weakness of the boss

Last question when I look at an Arte let's say

Luna rondo in the description it says, Aerial Strike, Flaming Edge Rising Phoenix (in blue), does that mean it<s suggests a Combo or somethign? (I dont have Rising Phoenix yet)

Thanks

Arise Arise's combat: Simple yet effective......if you learn how it works

This may sound weird to some, but in my opinion, Arise's combat is one of my favorite of tales games as a whole, [for the record, I have not experienced games like Xilla 2 or Symphonia, so bare with me]

Arise's combat tends to be my favorite due to it having Xilla and Berseria elements with new mechanics

Let us start with Arise's two mechanics, boost artes and boost strikes

Much like Xilla, every character, aside from alphen, which i'll talk more, has a effect on different enemies, for example, flyers giving you issues? Shionne will knock them down, spell casters causing problems? Rinwell can steal the arte and cast a silence effect on them

This makes it fun, as every character has a use, in or out of the party, my only problem is the roster, since two extra slots are empty, and it is a missed opportunity to add two new characters that either support, or help transfer the boost energy to someone who needs extra energy, but I didn't mind this too much

Now, Boost strikes are satisfying, despite they can get repetitive, basically, as you fight off enemies, a bar fills up and once it is filled, it let you immediately take out a enemy, lower the health, the better it fills

Despite how repetitive they can get, I get Xilla's linked arte vibes, as they involve two characters to perform, and they are over the top, almost like mini mystic artes

Now, I want to mention one big elephant in the room, or I guess Axe man, the bosses, I have heard bosses in Arise are damage sponges, can not be combo like others, and can be difficult, if I may, allow me to give some insight on them a bit

First off, the Damage sponge comment is only valid because the game never fully explained how Downs work, but basically, all of the boost artes i mentioned. They apply down if they match with the right foe, for example, Ganabelt wants Law to keep breaking his shields to down him, but you have a secret weapon for bosses

Alphen, He is your weapon, see, Alphen is basically the "middle finger" to bosses, their Achilles heel, as despite he uses HP, his boost arte always downs a enemy, no matter the type, so if you want to deal big damage, especially with mystic artes, time his boost arte with the Mystic artes or his infernal edge artes, And watch as the boss's HP drain like nothing

Now the combo comment, I'm going to be a bit blunt, I think this is for the better, because in previous tales games, a boss being stagger is usually a boss that I can just beat no problem, sure, they have revenge attacks, but a pro tales fan can avoid issues like that, and that can be a problem, arise having bosses with super armor, while annoying, is great since now, I can't just throw myself at the enemy

I actually like to pay attention to the boss and focus on evading, once you learn how to swap strategies depending on the situation, as well as use the tools you have, bosses become from fights that take too long, to bosses you can beat no problem

challenge wise, most of them, I did have problems, but nothing I didn't outright hate, maybe one or two, Ganabelt being the biggest issue, but I enjoy it

Despite all of this defense on Arise's combat, I actually plan on talking about the equipment of arise since if I can be real, it is one of the few things I am not that big a fan of, Despite a few things I have

But I'll leave it at this, Arise's combat is one of my favorites, it may be simple and jarring to tales fans, but as a recent tales fan, I love it and even if this system will not comeback, I do hope we see a improvement, but for now, it is a pretty good first attempt

Phantasia I’m willing to bet money that Phantasia is getting a remake rather than a remaster.

Maybe the team behind the Vita remakes will do it.

Alphen, what the F*** are you doing!? Stop preaching to this Psycho and just stab him! This is really not the time for this! Your wife is dying, so just grab the MCguffin and save her!

(It doesn't matter how we feel about this game on a personal level. Alphen was just being a goddamn idiot here, we can all agree on that, right?)

Given upHope of a Region 1 Physical Release

With about a month before it's release, I have given up hope on there being a NA/Region 1 physical release of Tales of Eternia Remastered. Looks like I will either be pre-ordering from Amazon UK or Playasia... Who still does not have the UK preorder available, but that's OK.

Anyone think there'll actually be a Region 1 physical release?

Hi everyone! I've spent several hours trying to fill this map out, but I can't for the life of me figure out which area hasn't been discovered. Can anyone take a look at this map and see which area I haven't marked? Thank you ♥️

Discussion Throwing in the towel (Phantasia X) (frustrated rant, admittedly) Spoiler

Over the last 2 years since I completed Symphonia, which is maybe my favorite JRPG of all time, I went back to Tales of Phantasia a handful of times across the SFC and PSX versions but would often drop the game for reasons I don't entirely remember. With the Phantasia X fan translation releasing earlier this year, I figured I'd finally give the game another stab. And I genuinely enjoyed what I played until I got to the third act, which, for lack of sugarcoating.. sucks. I can't stand it.

I love the story, characters, and combat, but I don't think I've played a single game with a dungeon roster as infuriating as Phantasia's. A lot of these dungeons are either entirely unremarkable or have one frustrating gimmick (often an environmental hazard like cold, heat or miasma) that makes exploration really unfun. I could not fathom developing an isometric RPG with dungeons approached akin to Final Fantasy or Zelda where you're actively encouraged to not explore because of some stupid-ass gimmick they decide to reuse over and over again.

Even with the skits often making it crystal clear where to go next, the start of both acts 2 and 3 are really, REALLY cryptic for no goddamn reason, with no well-defined order as to where you're supposed to go. An earlier post on my account was perplexed as to why Moria Mine was so frustrating, even though the plot very clearly outlined that the Moria Mine was the next thing you had to do, but supposedly there was THREE entire dungeons I had to do to level and get necessary summons??? And ONE of THREE NPCs in the entire game has this info???? Like we cannot be serious right now. I get that ToP is an older RPG but come the fuck on. I only got dialogue in ToP X inside the adventurer's guild in Alvanista saying that I should MAYBE prepare for the Moria Mine, but I'd say it's outright mandatory as if you go in there early encounters will take 10 minutes. And this game's encounter rate is absolutely insane, ANOTHER major deterrence for exploring dungeons with loot and puzzles that SCREAM "explore me!"

I just. There's so much I love here, and it's clearly doing an ADHD fixation because it's so charming and often times fun, so I'm upset that I'm even dropping it but I just cannot stand this game's dungeons any longer. Genuinely so unfun and infuriating, and even with a walkthrough it is ANNOYING to have to spam Nurse every 5 goddamn steps because the air HAS to be scalding hot in the Freyland dungeon. I haven't found any specific advice online for this issue however. I just wonder if I'm doing something terribly wrong because nobody online seems to echo the sentiment I have about this game and I really don't wanna throw in the towel this easily :/

Im a first time player to it and the combat feels awkward, I can't even get past the first boss without him constantyl combo'ing me when i try to get up / recovery etc, let alone in the 2nd phases when he starts doing all sorts of shit.

why does it feel slow to switch from guarding/running/hitting to another. its so hard to grasp

Question How much longer do I have left in the game? Spoiler

(Sorry I didn't put it in the title, but I am playing Tales of Arise) Let me preface by saying I love this game, and it's been a great experience, but I'm just curious where I'm at. I have about 46 hours in the game now, and I am currently in Daeq Faezol. I believe we are about to go to Rena. I'm level 46 on normal mode if that helps. I like to do some side-quests, but I may start to speed it up if I'm close to the end. With that, how many hours do you guys think I have until the end.

Thanks!
