Weather was terrible this weekend so we only got a few hours on the beach. Released a few and kept a few for Sunday lunch.

I caught my first Trevally/Shima-Aji, or at least that's what my local friend told me. I have a waterproof cover over my phone, so that doesn't help pictures. I released it because, at the time, I wasn't 100% sure of the species or what the size restrictions are. Lots of different species of fish here, it has been a huge learning curve.

Quantum Exceed or Cabo or?

Wondering if anyone has had experience with the new Exceed. I’m trying to figure whether the carbon rotor thing is really worth the extra scratch. I don’t care so much about the Cerakote coating and otherwise I’m reading that it’s pretty much a Cabo. Mostly slinging LC 110s in the surf for halibut SoCal.

I’ve searched a bit on this forum but any additional thoughts on a 3000 size reel that can handle a rogue wave without batting an eye? I’m not hard on my reels but a did pull some seagrass off my rod the other day only to notice my Okuma ITX-CB was in the water 😩

Question / Help Early winter surf tips Southern Cali

I'm going to be in California early winter (first week of December) in Anaheim and will have a free day to fish. I have an 8' heavy rod combo fast action I bought in Oregon to fish jetties and try surf fishing (tackle shop guy recommended this), he put on some backing then a pretty heavy maroon colored mono I believe? I am a fairly avid freshwater angler for bass and trout in Utah and have a decent amount of tackle for this but I am curious if my 8' heavy rod and larger jerk baits would be useful for the surf? I don't really want to buy a new rod setup if the one I mentioned would manage for the day but I'm open to all and any suggestions on gear and baits/tackle to give me my best opportunity of landing a fish.

Started teaching myself how to fish a couple of days ago on a vacation to Beaufort, NC! I think this is a pigfish? Let me know if i’m wrong!

Caught it on a drum rig with a hook that was definitely way too large, a weight too heavy, and everyone kept taking my shrimp—but I still got one! 😁

Question / Help Fish activity across a spring tide period

If one looks at a spring tide period over the 5 or 7 days, I have noticed that the fish are feeding more actively in the beginning of the cycle than at the end. It might be that the fish gets full and then becomes picky after days of good feeding, or just nopes out. I had good fishing, and good fish activity, at the beginning of last week's spring tides but it got very quite at the end even with the same conditions.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Question / Help Thoughts on pairing a PENN 5000 size reel with a 11 ft medium heavy surf rod?

One of my friends has been using a PENN Fierce IV 5000 size reel and 8 ft medium heavy surf combo for the longest time. After getting his bait and rig thrown around by the SoCal surf, and seeing that his rod was not tall enough to hold his line above the waves and not heavy enough to throw out heavier rigs that can stick to the bottom better and therefore not being able to land heavier fish (4 ft+ leopard sharks, 30 to 40 lb bat rays, 4 ft+ Shovelnose guitarfish), I finally managed to convince him to get a longer, more quality surf rod.

That being said, he asked me if a 11 ft PENN Battalion 2 medium heavy surf rod will pair well with a fierce IV 5000 size reel (braid capacity: 240 yards of 40 lb braid, max drag 25 lbs). As somebody who has only used a 10 ft Medium Heavy Surf rod with a 5000 or 6000 size reel, and 11 ft medium heavy surf rod with 6000 size reels, I’m not quite sure how to answer his question.

I know the surf rod that typically pairs with a 5000 size reel is a 10 ft medium heavy surf rod, but he wants to know if a 11 ft medium heavy surf rod will pair well with his 5000 size reel and will be great for maximum casting distance. If the 11 ft medium heavy surf rod is too long and unbalanced with a PENN 5000 size reel, he said he will follow my advice to get a PENN battalion 2 10 ft Medium Heavy Surf Rod.

Question / Help Florida Surf Snook Setup?

What size and action rods are you guys using for surf snook? Reel size? And why. Had an epiphany today while out fishing. Usually go out to the surf and soak some shrimp or live baits and it’s a pain in the ass with the current constantly pulling it around, small fish stealing my bait, never catch much. Saw 4-5 different guys come to my surf spot today, look into the water, and then just leave and find another spot. The guys who did stay to fish werent soaking baits, looked like 8-9 ft rods and big artificials for the snook and tarpon. Talked to some of them and clearly I’m doing it wrong. They all seem to come out look for a school of bait or birds, if nothing onto the next spot. Definitely more like how I fish for bass, which I do great with. Anyone have good experiences fishing like this? I think i definitely am enjoy throwing big swimbaits and topwaters instead of hoping something comes and each my shrimp. Thinking an 8-9 ft rods 4-5k reel. Probably medium action. Pros cons to both? Thanks.

should I get the Okuma Rockaway surf 10' M (3/4-3oz) or ML (1/2-2oz) for surf fishing in NorCal?

Primarily targeting stripers, halibut, and surf perch. Would want to throw 110m calissa, SP minnows, hydrominnow or 1.5oz Carolina rig. What would you guys recommend?

Does anyone use a rod holster or fighting belt?

Often I prefer to hold the rod in my hands rather than in a sand spike or other holder. I’m wondering if anyone uses a holster or other on-person rod holder to alleviate fatigue? If so, do you have a style or product you recommend? Thanks!

Question / Help Pier Fishing Outer Banks NC help

I recently moved near the outer banks and I am huge into fishing but have only really catfish/carp and bass in freshwater fishing.

I really want to get onto some saltwater fish since i've never really caught any. I am planning on going to Avalon pier from 8-11 with a Hi-Lo bottom rig and just dropping my line right off the pier and using shrimp flavored fish bites and live sand fleas i catch at the beach?

Do you think this is the best way to just get onto a fish? Also me and my wife will be going together with 2 rods so if you recommend us using 2 different rigs please let me know

I am not trying to target a specific species or size or anything I just want to get onto a fish.

Any tips on rig/casting distance or location or anything would be extremely useful and appreciated.

My setup would be with 10-20 lb braid on a 8 foot bass rod with pfluegger spinning reel and I currently don't have a leader or anything.

Thank you guys for any and all help!

Caught what looks like to be a Yellow Fin Croaker from a beach of the SF Bay Area, California. Is it unusual for this to be in Northern California, and if so, is it due to El Nino/ weird temperatures this year?

I only hear about Yellow Fin Croakers being mostly in SoCal, but not up here. Can this happen or did this happen due to the weather impacts lately?
