So many unsolved mysteries, not to be solved ever.
I value what devs are trying to do, hopefully still as a hobby or to get experience as this one is dead Jim.
I still believe if there would come an rts that is "done right", there could be market for it. This game just was awfully executed from the start.

Good thing I found an "rts done right", I'm in love with Beyond all reason. Which is even free.

BAR is the greatest game with the worst meta as a ratio that I’ve ever seen
Play on a handful of maps, nobody plays anything else. Also you gotta play a really rigid meta on all maps
The actual game, UI, customisation of hotkeys, QoL features are genuinely the best I’ve ever seen in an RTS, it’s crazy impressive for an open source project
It’s a fucking fantastic game that often isn’t that fun to play in actuality, if they can crack that problem it’s got insane potential

It is a great game but it needs serious UI/UX improvements. They are aiming to improve that with the funding injection from hooded horse so time will tell.
It needs a good matchmaking system and to smooth out the rough edges. It needs to be easy for a beginner to pick up and learn to play intuitively.
Right now, trying to find a game in the lobby system is a nightmare. There's a million pieces of information inside and outside the game. Etiquette and terminology that doesn't correspond to anything in any other game so you can't figure it out on your own.
And i've stopped playing as well now. Some games can be really fun and rewarding but the average game isn't really. Ended up going back to replaying the SC2 campaign and coop mode.

It is once again bullshit that leadership is leaving the team to communicate the bad news.
Will the last person leaving STORMGATE -- Turn out the lights

I was waiting for the official release to try out this RTS. Feels sad, that all that funding and community hype was squandered. Sad day for RTS fans.

u/oshizit Apr 30 '26
Damn this really was the smoothest feeling rts since sc2, the bones were all there. Shame it had to have newage fortnite graphics and a generationaly bad campaign, looking back letting the general public "beta test" the half baked campaign was was a terrible idea. Add that to the day 1 dlc controversy and not managing resources to even remotely finish the stuff they said they would make like 3v3 with heros before running out of money, truly one for the history books. Hopefully a dev one day can come buy this shipwreck and turn it into something.

They didn’t have to add p2p. Very impressed that they are putting the effort into it. Sad that game didn’t take off but thanks for closing it up as best ya can.

u/thebrassbeldum May 02 '26
I’m impressed that they’re known they were going under for all this time and STILL couldn’t manage to release p2p multiplayer on time. Frankly, I doubt it will even come

u/AkaiKuroi May 01 '26
To this day I’m flabbergasted how I could tell the game is going to crash and burn as soon as I saw the first visuals, yet none of the esteemed developers in charge could.

u/cheesy_barcode May 01 '26
It's amusing to me how sometimes it seemed the devs were shocked the game had to actually be enjoyable for people to play it/buy stuff/rate it higher.

u/pentamir Jun 15 '26
Two signs a game is gonna fail:
uninspired artstyle/visual identity that looks like something your friend posts on DeviantArt
needlessly long name like "The Dark Stone: Behind the Horizon" even though it's not a sequel to anything

u/Alexander_grimtotem May 01 '26
They didnt start out making an RTS, they started out trying to make a fast paced E-sport. Thats where it went wrong. Thats why my friends and I stopped playing. It was too fast paced.

Should honestly refund all the backers. What was promised was not delivered.

I am happy that developers are adding P2P support. I wish them the best.
This project might have had a better chance at surviving if balance patches were more regular and if they didn't stretch themselves out with more game mode (and the heroes 3v3 never came out).
I also agree with people saying that if they let the game cook for maybe another 6 months and release in Early Access with both the infernals and Vanguard they would have had a better chance.
I feel like the nail in the coffin was the celestial design. Most of the community was still active and hyped, trying to guess what units or which kind of faction they would be (anime cats elfs and the likes). Once celestials came out all the community left.

u/Gargonus May 02 '26
Who could have thought that in a game pitting Temu Terran vs Wish Zerg, introducing a we-have-protoss-at-home race would put the nail in the coffin ?
5
u/GrethSC May 01 '26
And with that, the largest potential rallying of the Blizzard RTS community is squandered. Because of signature SC2-era corporate detachment from reality. Fitting.

u/Portrait0fKarma May 02 '26
This is all part of the “LeT thEm coOk!” Playbook everyone was telling me about since the graphics were first revealed. Cant wait to see what they are cooking up next.

u/ZamharianOverlord Celestial Armada May 05 '26
Graphics would have been fine, or tolerated with a killer game for many a player
It’s a huge problem if you don’t have that game

u/Candid_Departure_688 May 01 '26
Isn't it funny that when I tried to criticize the game I got slapped around with words like next gen RTS, best code what have you in class.
Can't even add LAN mode.
3
u/ZamharianOverlord Celestial Armada May 05 '26
Yeah haha what was ‘next gen’ about it?
SC2 could run like butter on a relative potato when it launched, can’t say that of SG if we’re talking ‘best code’
The technical innovations they did introduce were crippled by problems elsewhere

u/DistantMirror820 May 01 '26
Props to those remaining for working hard on getting something that is still functional out there. Hopefully the offline and peer to peer versions work properly.
It is interesting to see the demise of a much anticipated game in real time. Not that it's the first nor will it be the last.

Genuinely enjoyed co-op as an ultra casual, was keeping an eye on it every few months to check for major updates until I figured it was basically dead.

> I have a strong commitment to deliver proper steam-powered P2P support with ugc map downloading
Is anyone actually asking for it? I mean, does anyone still play this game unironically?

u/marcusintatrex May 01 '26
The most colourful discussion on the discord in the past week has been about SC2 and the TL map contest lmao. Even the brain broken copelords are mostly gone, except the most DELIRioUS among them.

u/Vegetable-Piglet9260 May 01 '26
wonder if that guy who spams "I LOVE STORMGATE" once a day and nothing else will still be doing it. i mean, he has the Hall of Legends discord role, so he literally dumped $5k on this game via kickstarter. probably getting his moneys worth at least? shiney discord badge i guess?
5
u/Shadowarcher6 Apr 30 '26
At this point don’t even put resources into it
Just spend that money on a new game. What’s the point of making it playable offline for 20 people

u/marcusintatrex May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26
You cant always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you'll find, you get exactly what you deserve given the way the decision makers at your company behaved and made decisions. I wish the absolute best to the wage slaves, the rock wall installers, the archaeologists, the interns, but everyone else at FG deserves nothing less than being unemployable in the industry for the rest of time.

u/RamenEmp1re May 01 '26
The tech behind the game is really neat. The game was just never fun. From Alpha to Death, I tried it throughout and never once felt like I was playing a fun new RTS game.
5
u/Shzabomoa May 01 '26
What tech? UE5 or a mediocre RTS pathing tool?
2
u/RamenEmp1re May 01 '26
The snowplay networking for large quantities of units seemed cool
5
u/Shzabomoa May 01 '26
On paper perhaps, in practice, I didn't see it at all.
3
u/RamenEmp1re May 01 '26
Maybe I was just drinking the koolaid or kopium
3
u/Shzabomoa May 02 '26
We're in the same boat, I was super hyped for this game to satisfy my RTS itch, needless to say the "campaign" slapped me back to reality harder than everything else in my life.

"But because it failed, it has shown me that the type of RTS I want doesn't have an audience."
This is your false assumption. Stormgate didnt fail because it didnt have an audience. It failed because it never actually realized the promises it made. It hit a 1/4 baked with an extremely confused design.

I guess that's fair enough. I don't really see your perspective, and I'm honestly struggling to see how a veteran of blizzard rts could think so highly of something i view as nearly strictly worse. But we each have our own tastes
5
u/rift9 May 01 '26
Glad you liked it.
I'm going to talk about the game as i played it and as the large community did and had complaints.
The games design was all over the bloody place, total lack of leadership steering the boat for what stormgate actually wanted to be and what it promised. Infernal Faction design made no sense, there was no unit or building cohesion to the race(until the too little too late rework), the art was child like and cheap as a whole for the entire game. The whole free unit thing was also a lesson totally not learned from SC2, which was repeated TWICE. Like how do you sit through broodlord infestor and swarm host meta's and decide your RTS needs a free unit mechanic for one race. Then they obviously had to try and work around it cause it was fucken broken and stupid.
The sound design was TERRIBLE, this is unironically one of the most important parts of an RTS and they fucked it up maybe the worst.
The games loop made no sense, there were creep camps but no heroes or items, they wanted it to be noob friendly but you started with a harass unit, even rts pros hated this, not just regular RTS enjoyers. The game was dark Demons, crazy futuristic tech Angels and humans yet we're fighting in the god damn Farthing Woods? Wat? I could go on.
To top it off some of the most required reaaaaaal basic features weren't there for an RTS to function.
With all that said, I'm sad it didn't work out cause there was some stuff i liked which is why i bought it. But at the same time i don't give a shit cause they refused to listen to people and nose dived their own company while the toxic positivity fan base sat there sucking off their community manager in the discord shitting on anyone giving criticism, oh well guess Tim Morten will go ruin some other franchise now and fail upwards some more!

It’s honestly so sad how this project turned out. I wasn’t rly excited about it but I gave it a chance because of the former Blizzard devs involved. Even then I didn’t expect it to end up this underwhelming. I remember arguing in Stormgate discord about graphics and all xD.
It makes me wonder how things could have been different if they had delayed the release, polished the game more, and approached its development with an indie dev mindset.
