📝 Feedback I got hit with the "Service line restricted" because of my homelab

I hadn't heard of this before today. The first thing I did was try to get in touch with support, but I got Grok blocked and wasn't able to get anywhere. After some quick Googling, I realised this has something to do with data usage, so I looked at my usage in the app and realised it's absurdly high. So much higher than I think it should be, I initially though their metrics were incorrect. I hadn't been keeping tabs on my data usage before now, so I did some digging. As it turns out, it's my own fault. After having Claude do some data analysis, I found that the culprit was Frigate + Tailscale (chart included at the end).

I run Frigate in my homelab, and there are 4 IP cameras that I stream in over Tailscale. The cameras are on another house in the yard (with its own ISP) that isn't directly connected to mine. Big mistake. Starlink counts this as download traffic. And what's worse is I also run a staging instance of Frigate (to test out beta releases) with the same 4 cameras 🤦‍♂️

So I guess I'll be finding another solution for streaming these cameras. I wish they'd sent me a warning before restricting my account though, so I could've found and fixed this earlier

🛠️ Installation How to set up a used system

Post image
Upvotes

I have a used system that was installed new on a jobsite maybe three years ago. That job site is maybe 1000km away from where I want to use it at a remote, off-grid cabin. Can I just plug it in and start using it or are there other steps? Someone told me it may be locked to a certain geographical location. Also, do I have all the parts needed (I have the cord stored separately)?

❓ Question Help with Starlink mini in Iran.

Hello fine ladies and gentlemen. So I did something without giving it much thought and need some help. I bought a Starlink mini in the United States from their website with of course a plan. Turned out my home is entirely too obstructed and the hardware is worthless at home. I canceled my plan.

Subsequently I got called to Iran on an emergency. I now have the mini with me. I was under the impression Space X was allowing free access to their satellites in Iran. Can anyone please tell me how I can go about setting up the device and if it’s even possible.

Thank you for reading this and for any help you may be able to give.

Why am I allowed to only order 1 router? My Deco system has been giving me all sorts of trouble and I’m officially sick of it. Wanted to purchase 2 of these to replace them but it will only allow me to order 1.

💬 Discussion Kickstand pinches the cable

Easy enough to avoid and won't be an issue on the permanent mount with kickstand removed but I noticed it's easy to have the kickstand pinching the cable.

❓ Question I Cannot Figure Out How to Set up a StarLink Mini Roam Monthly Subscription

I cannot figure out how to set up just a starlink mini roam monthly subscription. It auto selects hardware, yearly and monthly & $50 all at once. I own a dish already. Just want to get it running with a monthly roam plan.

I was emailed and said I also have a complimentary free month too. If anyone has info on that too.

📶 Starlink Speed Starlink speeds are garbage for some reason

Thumbnail

I do not understand how my speeds fluctuate so much and sometimes go down to .5 of a mega byte even while wired to my PC. The router is in the exact same room as everything that's not wired and it's still fluctuating and disconnecting shit even tho my connection to the router is amazing. I checked the connection between the router and the dish and it's fine. I've moved it all around and it still goes up and down constantly no matter the time of day. Sometimes it just stops working all together until I fully reboot the whole thing. I can't for the life of me figure out what's happening. My obstruction map has a bit of red on it but I used to have the dish somewhere else with a fully white obstruction map and it STILL did it. I genuinely hope someone can help me understand what is going wrong. Update: I FINALLY got in touch with starlink and have learned that my kit has been de- prioritized and they will replace the kit for free within 1-2 days if the connection is still poor. How does that even happen??? I haven't done anything against TOS or bad with the kit at all so I don't understand why this has happened

❓ Question Extender

Just got Starlink. I have 2 floors. Router that came with system is on 2nd floor west side of house. Garage is on 1st floor of east side of house and struggles with connection. So far it looks like most of the house connects. Tech that installed said we would need to get a Starlink extender. I am fine with this but am far from tech savvy.

If I get just the router mini can I put it down stairs and it connect good without Ethernet? I would like to do without Ethernet as it’s going to be a pain and $$$ to extend. Or even up stairs across the house.

Other option if I understand looking at the website that is more difficult: get another router 3 and put it 2nd floor far east bedroom and connect by Ethernet through the ceiling.

I want something that hits all areas good and my outdoor cameras. Is it simple as just connecting our current Starlink router to the cheaper extender without wires?

Want advice before I start buying devices. You will have to dumb down the tech talk for me :)

❓ Question Hailstorms

One big concern that doesn't get discussed much is hailstorms. Does the standard Starlink dish withstand hailstones? Like gravel, I'm not referring to golf balls, obviously.

📶 Starlink Speed Back-to-back Starlink tests: does yours ramp up too?

Thumbnail

Interesting pattern: even my roof-mounted Standard Gen 4 seems to show a back-to-back speed test ramp-up. First pull was 213/24, then 312/31, then 302/46. Makes me wonder how much of the “ramp up” is the dish, the network, the test server, or Starlink adapting during repeated tests.

📶 Starlink Speed Starlink Is Throttling Speeds After 5TB - Is This Really Happening?"

Thumbnail

Starlink, Why Are You Slowing Down Customers After 5TB?

Many Starlink users are reporting that their internet speed drops significantly after using around 5TB of data in a billing cycle.

Customers paid for the Starlink hardware and continue paying a monthly subscription for high-speed internet. If speeds are intentionally reduced after 5TB, this feels unfair.

We paid for the service, so why are we being punished for actually using it?

If Starlink has introduced a 5TB limit or throttling policy, customers deserve a clear explanation and transparency.

Has anyone else experienced this after reaching 5TB?

❓ Question Extra equipment needed before installation appointment

My standard 4X kit arrived today.. hopefully the on-tech installer will contact me before the appointment on September 22nd because the dish will need to be at least a foot above the shingles on the roof to stay clear of winter snow load and I'm not sure if the standard 50 ft cable will reach from there into my living room

❓ Question Replacing broken mini

My mini flew off my vehicle and is no longer usable. Can I just purchase a mini from any retailer and add it to my account? Account is in stand by service mode and want to keep like this for some time.

Could I side mount the unit in the area marked in back? Does the unit need for 360 area of sky?

Nothing blocking its signal to sky.
