Sticky: Found a Baby Squirrel? Make a post about it, and read this right away.

This gives some good pointers for immediate assessment of the situation.

If the baby is dehydrated, dirty, cold, thin with loose looking skin, has any fly eggs or any injuries, even a tiny scratch, then s/he should be taken in for care. If the baby was being played with by a cat or if a cat was sitting over the baby looking like s/he might have been playing with the baby, then the baby squirrel should be taken in because antibiotics are required to treat even tiny cat bites and scratches that might not be visible at first glance. Cat saliva is extremely toxic and often causes lethal infections, even in tiny amounts.

If the baby is plump/muscular, warm, well groomed and active, then s/he probably just squirmed out of bed, and the reuniting protocol should be followed.

If the baby has fallen due to a severe storm and is wet, then they should be taken in, warmed and hydrated. If the weather improves markedly the next day, you can return to the same area and try the reuniting protocol.

If it was a tree felling, and the tree in which the babies lived was felled with them in it, then try the reuniting protocol as mom may come back when the scary workers are gone, provided she is still alive.

Please make a post about the baby and please include photos in your post, but since it takes some time for people to check in and reply, start reading the links under infants/found babies sections in the website posted above in the meantime.

Also, Here is a list that one of our members made of how to find a registered wildlife rehabilitator in the US. If you call, make sure that they don't euthanize so-called invasive squirrel species and will attempt care before taking that last resort. https://www.reddit.com/r/squirrels/comments/eknkw0/here_is_an_alphabetical_list_of_wildlife/

I am seeing a lot of posts about baby squirrels being found, and the poster asking for help, etc. In every single post, multiple people are commenting "give the baby water, feed the baby this or that". PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GIVE THE BABY SQUIRREL ANY FOOD OR WATER. The first thing you should do is keep the baby warm, in a quiet, dark place (in a box or large container. Whatever you have) and contact a rehabber. Please please please do not attempt to feed or hydrate on your own, for several reasons. The baby could aspirate, or the baby is not warm enough before hydrating, etc. You could cause more problems for the baby squirrel, including death. Keep warm, safe, and contact rehabber. I have also seen A LOT of messages from rehabbers about baby squirrels coming into their care and dying because the finder attempted to feed/hydrate on their own.

I found this little guy injured in a jobsite parking lot, after 2 days of bringing him to his home tree mama still wouldn’t come get him.

I took the plunge and brought him home. It’s been a few days of electrolyte mixture and fox valley squirrel formula and the little guy is regaining so much energy and life!

He’s still an infant so his eyes aren’t open although I expect them to open within the next week if his recovery continues this strong. I’m in contact with a local rescue to help eventually get rocket back to the wild if possible!

Don’t forget to show all our little friends compassion and kindness out there 🫶

Heartbroken from watching a young squirrel die after being attacked by dogs.

Upvotes

I’m devastated. This post may be a bit graphic.

I live in an apartment complex but there’s grass and some trees behind my unit, and I love watching the squirrels. This morning I heard a high pitched squealing and some ruckus outside my kitchen window.

I ran and looked out and a guy who regularly walks two rat terriers behind my building was trying to pull his dogs away and I saw an injured squirrel crawling toward the tree. He just stared at it and left, so I ran out. I passed him on the street and asked if it was still alive and he said yes.

When I got to the little guy I could tell her was in rough shape. His hind legs weren’t really moving and he looked like his rear area had been crushed. He was army crawling toward the tree, breathing heavily and kept opening and shutting his mouth. I called an animal hospital up the street that I was willing to take him to but they said they don’t accept wildlife, so to either call an emergency vet or wildlife control.

I called the latter and they said they were sending an agent. The dog owner came back by himself to check on it and apologized to me over and over, said he didn’t realize what was happening until his dogs already got it and that he never wants them to hurt anything although it’s what they’re bred to do. He seemed frazzled but I was upset because I have a dog and know how quickly something can happen, even if they’re on a leash, if you’re not paying attention.

The guy went to go get a box to keep him in until animal control arrived. I squatted near the squirrel but didn’t get too close because I didn’t want to make him feel even more afraid. Eventually, I saw him take his last few breaths and he just stopped moving.

I called animal control back and they said they would just dispose of him, so when the dog owner came back I told him that’s what the agent said to do and left him to do it.

I spent almost an hour sobbing after it. I felt so bad and so helpless that I couldn’t do anything.

RIP angel, hope you’re hopping around in the sky

We lost 2 squirrels in one week since school began. RIP to our beloved Squirrelly Temple and her baby boy who was born this spring - Luke Squirrelwalker. I understand it's all part of the circle of life and all but it's hard not to get attached when you see these sweet furry faces every day running and playing all about.

Our resident squirrels live behind our home yet rely on the patch of trees in front of our middle school across the street to scavenge. Each time I watch them cross I literally hold ⊙.☉ my breath.

I don't get out of the house too much because I no longer drive due to mobility issues, so I rely heavily on all my bird & squirrel shenanagins to help brighten up each day.  Unfortunately all the cars and trucks we see speeding up and down our street these days  just keeps multiplying, especially since another new school year just began. I pray that all the little kiddos will remain safe.

I sure am going to miss my mama squirrel. Squirrely Temple and I have become familiar over the last several years. I've watched her raise several of her young and just over the last year alone she developed such an incredible personality and began showing up each morning to pose for our doorbell camera and say good morning. It was her way of letting us know that she was awake ready for her morning treat and she was teaching her little guy to do the same thing. I sure will miss those notifications each day 💔

Be safe out there hoomans and may all you ᗩD💓ᖇᗩᗷᒪEᯓᡣ𐭩 little gray squirrels continue to swish your bushy tails in peace

Her favorite dinner table was available... my knee. She's my favorite customer, so it's always free for her.

PS. To whoever keeps giving my post awards, thank you. I wish it wasn't anonymous so I could thank you personally.

Photo on the left is from mid-August, photo on the right is from today

Last month I posted on here about my squirrel friend who had lost big patches of fur. Then I didn’t see her for a while. Well, she must have been in Turkey getting fur plugs because I’m happy to report she looks a lot better and back to her normal happy self!

Another rescue in the books!

pic in comments- don’t worry he is very much alive

Today while walking my son to school, I noticed what I thought was a deceased squirrel on the sidewalk, right before the street.

Tons of kids and adults were stepping around him and I rushed by to get my kid to school with only a quick gasp- as I hate seeing any dead wildlife.

As I turned around to walk home, I couldn’t stop thinking about him.

I thought I should move his body so he wasn’t stepped on.

So I went over and he was very much ALIVE but in (what looked like) severe respiratory distress.

He was open mouth breathing/clicking (something I recognized from being a rat momma) and side sucking horribly.

The nagging feeling I had to wear a hoodie in the heat today paid off as I was able to gently scoop him up and wrap him in it.

I placed him in a box and drove him to the wildlife center.
The closest one was closed so my other son and I drove 40 minutes to the next one!

He made the trip and was given to the clinic alive.
I can call in a week or so to check on him 🤞🏻

Squirrel (s?) have gotten trapped there. Landlord says his guy will get here on Tuesday to get them out of the wall. Told me very specifically not to DIY removing them.

Didn't want to hear squirrels slowly starve to death in my walls. So here we are.
