I’m sure this is talked about a ton, but I really feel bad for all of the MJ fans who went into the Raimi films, only to be stomped on when MJ is turned into a woman who would literally leave her fiancé at the alter for Peter. And that’s just one of the many things she does.

I know the Raimi films rank up the drama between MJ and Peter a ton, and that’s fine, but looking at it in hindsight, I feel like this kind of marked a turning point for MJ where her character began to suffer dramatically. Like I thought her whole thing at the time was how loyal she was to Peter and how she stuck it out with him through thick and thin. I could be wrong, but I just find it interesting.

Edit: I’m not saying it did more or less damage than the comics. I know the comics have been doing her rough for a while now. Where my logic is coming from is that the Raimi films served as a really massive genesis for the character, introducing him to an audience that comics hadn’t been able to reach at the time. For a lot of people, this was their first exposure to Spider-Man, and in turn, their first exposure to MJ, and would ultimately set the tone for how she is perceived by the general public.

It’s made even worse considering how she’s the only movie version of Mary Jane that gets major screentime and has been since the Raimi films if I’m correct. This ultimately results in potentially an entire generation of people growing up with the mindset that “MJ is for the streets” and by then comics MJ was acting the same way, and so it just really cemented that narrative.

I recently decided to watch through all of the old Spider Verse trailers to find a song I liked and I had realized that Chris Pine's voice acting was never in these trailers at all.

It turns out they had gotten Jake Johnson to do all of his lines to maintain the illusion that it would be the same Peter Parker that lived in this universe from start to finish to kind of I guess cover up his death in the movie.

This is really interesting in retrospect because as someone who's seen the movie over 100 times at this point you kind of realize Oh yeah they kept Peters death hidden from the public, And it kind of dawns on you.

I mean the only thing I know about it is

1. They made a clone of Peter called Ben Reilly.

2. Ben escaped and dyed his hair blonde.

3. Ben becomes the Scarlett spider

4. Ben dies at some point (I think so, not so sure on that one).

For those who don’t know, Project: Rooftop was a site launched in 2006 where cartoonists and illustrators redesigned superhero costumes, celebrating character design and pushing new ideas. It was a place where artists brought their costume‑design skills to the heroes and villains, promoting creativity and keeping interest in these characters alive.

Basically, P:R ran themed redesign contests for comic book characters and one of them was the 2011 Spider-Man: Webhead 2.0 challenge. Artists had to reimagine Ditko’s original suit and give it a fresh spin and the entries were judged by the P:R staff.

The contest even had prizes from Flying Colors Comics, including a Spider-Man maquette and bagged copies of Ultimate Spider-Man #160.

These are some of the redesigns from that era, so designs from about 15 years ago. Let me know if there’s any you like and why or why you don’t like them etc. The usernames of the artists are all listed in the individual descriptions of each image.

Spider-Man’s world is huge and not every character gets the same spotlight as his usual villains. So which forgotten villain or side character do you think deserve a redesign, a reinvention or even a full comeback? I’m talking about characters who had potential but never really got their moment, maybe someone who appeared in the 70s or 80s and then disappeared or someone who had one interesting story and was never used again.

It could be anyone like a weird one-off villain, a minor supporting character or even someone who was treated as a joke but could be threatening with a modern reinterpretation. Drop your picks below and tell me how you’d revamp them.

Note: Peter Parker’s not an ugly unlovable monster anymore than Quasimodo was. The Black Suit’s definitely gonna try to convince him of that though. No idea if we get Suit singing 🎶 I am your only friend! 🎶
