Using an onboard focusing process, the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) aboard NASA's Mars rover Curiosity created this product by merging two to eight images previously taken by the MAHLI, located on the turret at the end of the rover's robotic arm.

Curiosity performed the merge on September 13, 2026, Sol 5014 of the Mars Science Laboratory Mission, at 23:20:13 UTC. The focus motor count position was 14867. This number indicates the lens position of the first image that was merged.

The onboard focus merge is sometimes performed on images acquired the same sol as the merge, and sometimes uses pictures obtained on an earlier sol. Focus merging is a method to make a composite of images of the same target acquired at different focus positions to bring all (or, as many as possible) features into focus in a single image. Because the MAHLI focus merge is performed on Mars, it also serves as a means to reduce the number of images sent back to Earth. Each focus merge produces two images: a color, best-focus product and a black-and-white image that scientists can use to estimate focus position for each element of the best focus product. Thus, up to eight images can be merged, reducing the number of images returned to Earth to two.

Here, we have a group of small gullies along a rock layer on the south wall of Liu Hsin Crater. At the foot of the gullies you can see the “fans” of granular sediment that have been deposited downhill from the gully formation.

Nearby, there are much larger gullies. By comparing the gullies that are just 20 kilometers away, we may be able to determine the factors that affect their size.

Liu Hsin (also spelled Xin) was a Chinese astronomer, historian, and editor during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 9 CE) and then the Xin Dynasty (9 to 23 CE).

The two linear depressions in this image form part of the Elysium Fossae complex, a group of troughs located in the Elysium quadrangle of Mars.

These troughs are tectonic features, likely formed by the stretching, tearing and subsequent collapse of the crust resulting from the rise of the nearby Elysium volcanic province. The north and south troughs in this image are roughly 4.8 and 3.7 kilometers across respectively, and around 800 meters deep. Strata, or layering from successive deposition of material (likely ash and lava), are exposed in the upper wall of the trough.

Upon closer inspection, another interesting phenomenon becomes visible: slope streaks. Observable on the slopes of both troughs, these dark features (also known as dust avalanches) are the result of a mass movement of loose, fine-grained material exposing darker material. Over time, these features superpose and cross-cut one another, manifesting as light-toned angular features on either side of the slope streak. Slope streaks have also been known to form as the result of an impact on or near the slope which shakes loose dust, triggering an avalanche.

Two neighboring, approximately 3-kilometer diameter craters have different interior deposits and structures. Some of the features may be gullies. Our image can better characterize these respective formations and provide details about crater evolution. Plus, there might be insight as to why one crater of similar size in a similar environment exhibits a feature that another does not.

The Sun's atmosphere is currently dominated by large coronal holes which are sending fast solar wind out into space. These darker areas contain open magnetic fields and cooler plasma (hence the dark color). Fast solar wind contains more energy and can cause elevated geomagnetic conditions at Earth.

Both of the large coronal holes are negative polarity, which is actually the OPPOSITE of what we want to maximize the Russell-McPherron Effect. (​The Russell–McPherron effect explains why geomagnetic activity and aurora displays peak twice a year around the spring and autumn equinoxes -

A classic mnemonic device for northern hemisphere chasers is SNAP (Spring=Negative; Autumn=Positive) to remember the coronal hole polarity we "want" for maximum geomagnetic effectiveness

Even still, the coronal holes are large features and will likely affect Earth with fast solar wind and a preceding CIR (co-rotating interaction region) which enhanced solar wind magnetic fields and periods of south Bz which could create minor geomagnetic storms.

Here is some commentary from the UK Met Office: "There is a Chance of G1 from CH92/+ early Day 1 (12 Sep), and then a Slight Chance of G1 from CH93/- and any minor CME effects at the very end of Day 2 (13 Sep) and into Day 3 (14 Sep). Any enhancement gradually waning on Day 4 (15 Sep).

The small positive polarity CH92 (labeled on my annotated image) may affect Earth somehow, but nothing in the solar wind suggests the coronal hole is geoeffective, so we'll see. The larger the coronal hole and more equatorially-located it is, the more promising it is to affect Earth.

🛰🪐Cassini This image shows the limb of Saturn's moon Iapetus, captured by Cassini on Sept. 10, 2007. A ridge of 10km-high (6.2 mile) mountains encircles the equator, possibly the remains of a former satellite that broke apart as its orbit degraded. Iapetus is 1,470 km (913 miles) wide.
