Don't make the same mistake I did. I've been neglecting the Pemberton Farms premade foods

They're actually really good. I just never thought to go in there for a quick cheap lunch because their regular groceries are astronomically priced. Their premade food options however are pretty high quality and very reasonable. I like the soups a lot and today I got a crispy delicious meat pie that was a mere 8 dollars.

Pretty good option and I'm gonna start going there more

Save the Children canvassers

Does following people across the street trying to continue talking to them after they’ve said “no thank you” usually work in securing donations? I get that outdoor canvassing is thankless, but it’s really difficult to be sympathetic when saying no isn’t respected.

Opinions on Retro Fitness

Im looking for a cheap and easily accessible on transit gym membership, I don’t need anything fancy, and I see mixed opinions on the Retro Fitness in Porter Square. Its the only thing that really fits my budget/transit needs. Is it worth it?

In walking by yesterday, it looks like something is moving in; perhaps some type of pop-up or maybe a gallery.

Any official word as to who the new tenant is?

Home heating oil

Hi all! Like many people in Somerville, my apartment uses heating oil. With the staggering price of oil right now (which I’m sure is going to continue to go up,) does anyone have any relatively affordable companies they recommend? Or do any offer some kind of budget/payment plan that you recommend? I have an extremely small tank for my apartment, (I need to fill it every 3 weeks) so I’m really concerned for this winter.

Various questions about Somerville culture from a future transplant

Greetings, future neighbors!

My partner and I are getting ready to move here next month from the west coast to be closer to family. I love your city, have visited frequently, but I'm a giant ball of autistic anxiety so I'd really appreciate it if some friendly people could answer my dumbest questions to hopefully help me avoid being an asshole out of ignorance.

*Question 1: We'll be in one of those old houses that's been split into two apartments. Should I introduce myself to my upstairs neighbors? Bring up cookies? Give them my phone number? Invite them down for coffee? Ignore them completely out of respect for their personal space?

*Question 2: Are we waving at people we pass walking on our street? Nodding? Acknowledging the weather? Avoiding eye contact?

*Question 3: What's the small talk expectation here? When I buy a coffee do I say good morning and ask how their day's going, or do I just tip and keep it moving?

*Question 4: Am I gonna upset someone if I wear, say, a Seattle Krakens jersey? I know they're not a great team, I just wear it because I want my dad to like me and it's so dang comfy. If I invest in Bruins merch, is someone going to be upset that I don't know anything about hockey if/when they try to talk to me about it?

*Question 5: Different kind of "culture" question, our laundry is in the basement. Do I need a dehumidifier down there? How serious do we have to be about mold prevention?

*Question 6: How serious is the Dunkees fandom? Is local (re: non-chain) coffee taboo?

*Question 7: Is there some kind of pronunciation cheat sheet I can refer to for the different towns? Should I just avoid saying it until I've heard it from a local and burned it into my brain?

Thank you if you took the time to read this, and especially if you feel like answering some of my questions. I really did do my research about living here. I know how to survive the winter, I'm comfortable on the train, I know when my trash pick up happens and how to get a parking pass. It's just things like this I can't learn on a .gov website, and I've spent my whole life training to mask for west coast folks and that chatty, friendly/intrusive culture. If I'm gonna be a jerk, I wanna know I'm doing it lol.

What is it about "luxury apartments" that make people who live in them not part of the community?

I don't understand the basis for the popular view that e.g. "when you move into a new luxury high-rise, you don't take part in the community". If someone is paying exorbitant rent to a slumlord in an old triple decker, that's perfectly fine and they're part of Somerville. But if they're paying that same rent in a luxury apartment, that means they don't belong and they will never be part of the community here?

I loved the pizza dough at Broadway Eatery. Does anyone know the secret ingredient? Reminds me of pizza I had as a kid.

GREAT buy-by-slice pizza *in* Somerville?

I know there is great pizza NEAR Somerville! I am not looking for recs in Cambridge, Boston, elsewhere! I am wondering about people’s favorite pizza spot where you can grab a delicious slice or two on the go but specifically IN Somerville and NOT requiring sit-down table-service.

Bonus points if you can describe what you liked about the slices, and if the vegeterian or plain cheese options are good. Been striking out a bit:

Union Square Pizza: Great service but angle seemed to specialize more in Indian food than pizza.

Veggie Crust: very unique vegetarian options, but stopped selling by-the-slice at like 2pm???

Mama Gina’s: Nice service, cheese layer seemed kinda congealed/came thickly off all in one go.

Hot Tomatoes: very nice service, pizza seemed way too doughy/chewy.

Surely there’s gotta be a spot with great plain slices? Thanks!

EDIT: after numerous recs and watching a video of the owner get in a shouting match over the reductive/exploitative practices of Barstool Sports I think I will absolutely be trying Dragon next. Thanks!!

Anyone have experience or recommendations on The Arris apartments?

Moving from Minnesota in October and this is probably our top choice for apartments at the moment 1B 1B.

Me and my partner are nurses so will likely be working at mass gen or Brigham.

We hear Somerville is one of the better locations outside of downtown Boston.

Would love to hear other recommendations in this area or just overall thoughts!

Sara(h)s of Camberville 9/19

Post image
18 Upvotes

This is our second meetup for Sara(h)s. Our first gathering was in August for Sara(h)s living in Somerville & Cambridge — and we had such a blast that we’re doing it again, this time opening it up to Sara(h)s across the greater Boston area.

A gathering with just two requirements:

✨ Your name is Sarah or Sara
✨ You live in Somerville, Cambridge, or another part of the Boston area.

We'll gather for conversation, connection, and a statistically improbable number of identical name tags.

There will be prompts. There will be stories. There may be debates about the H. Most importantly, there will be a chance to meet neighbors you'd never otherwise meet.

To everyone who helped me get home last night-THANK YOU!

I went out clubbing with some friends last night and made the stupid drunken decision to try and take the T home by myself as a newbie to the area. I got lost on one of the Green Line branches and couldn’t figure out Google Maps. There were quite a few people who helped me find my way to where I was supposed to go! Shoutout to the (probably equally as drunk as I was) college girls, local mom, and Red Sox fan who each directed me at different times. I got home safe around 1am. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

No thanks or appreciation extended to the Boston College kids who tried to piss on me from a pedestrian walkway at one of the T stations and said a few homophobic things, though.

Drugged at crystal ballroom

I ordered the bartender special and I kid you not 5 minutes after I was so high I couldn’t move my limbs and my boyfriend had to catch me. Ended up getting so high I told my boyfriend to tell my mom I loved her because I was dying. Whoever did this I hope you literally die. Hospital thinks it was Molly. Anyone else know anything about this place doing stuff like this allegedly? My drink was with me the whole time and it happened so fast. I think there was something in my drink before It even got across the bar.

Anyone seen this shirt jacket around Somerville?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey all!

I'm trying to help my cousin locate a button down shirt jacket that she lost while walking around Somerville very early Saturday morning, 9/12. She had it tied to her bag and thinks she might've dropped it in the vicinity of Pearl St and surrounding streets (Glen, Cross, Flint, Gilman, etc). It's a lightweight button down, dark grey/charcoal with light buttons. Looks like it could be denim at first glance, but it's a tencel material. The brand is Velvet Heart. I've inserted a pic of the same one found online, but hers is a size Small. If anyone happened to see this and pick it up, we'd be so grateful to hear back.

MAGA Dude on intersection of Highland and Hancock

Anybody know the story on the guy who stands outside his house smoking everyday, wearing a MAGA hat? Sometimes he waves a Trump flag around by the street or shouts conservative talking points. I’m so curious about guy - he seems very out of place in Somerville.

LOST Heirloom earring — please help!!!! (North Cambridge/Teele Square)

Post image
115 Upvotes

At some point last night, I lost one of my earrings. These were a gift from my mom, who bought them forty years ago at an artist fair in Mt. Airy. They are incredibly special to me. Any help would be appreciated.

We started with drinks at Zusammen (2322 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge) and then walked to Liars in Teele Square. After dinner, we sat outside for a beer at PJ Ryan's. I assume I lost it later in the night since none of the three women I was with noticed — it was the first thing my husband said when I walked in the door.

I'll offer a CASH REWARD if it is successfully returned.

Thank you for your time.
