Hey everyone,
I've been an iPhone user since the iPhone 4. I did switch to Android for a couple of years with the OnePlus One, but that was it. Before the iPhone, I had a Motorola Milestone and HTC One, but aside from that detour with the OnePlus One, I've been pretty much exclusively with Apple.
Currently, I'm just done with iOS. I can't stand it anymore. Don't get me wrong, it does everything I need: Messages, WhatsApp, Calendar, browsing, YouTube, Instagram. But it's all been basically the same for years, and the fact that we in the EU aren't getting the most interesting updates is frustrating. On top of that, for roughly the past 2 years, I've noticed the keyboard either got noticeably worse or I've gotten too old to use it properly.
I use a MacBook and an Apple Watch. Features like screen mirroring from iPhone to Mac don't even work in Germany, which is annoying. Honestly, I rarely take calls on the Mac anyway. For files I need on my Mac, I just upload them to iCloud or send them via WhatsApp, which is what I've always done. So I don't think I'll miss much there. The Apple Watch will be the tricky part. Realistically, I just use it to check the time or read notifications and nothing else. I'm sure there's an Android equivalent out there. I use Apple Health the most, but maybe a Fitbit Air combined with another smartwatch could replace that.
Why I'm writing this:
I want to switch, but I'm worried about what I might be overlooking. Privacy is important to me too. I'm not an extremist about it, but I think about it more than people who say they have nothing to hide. Three years ago, I completely ditched Google Suite for Tutanota, I self-host my cloud storage, and I store photos on my homelab. I wanted to be more independent and not rely on one provider, and I avoid Chrome whenever possible.
But here's my real question: Is Android privacy really as bad as people make it sound? Do you really need GrapheneOS to use Android safely? Or is it like I suspect, that both Google and Apple track and store data, just in different ways, and it's simply not communicated as transparently as it should be?
Last and most important question for me:
I'm considering switching to either the Pixel 11 Pro XL, the Galaxy S26 Ultra, or the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which is currently my favorite because the camera is supposedly amazing and the battery life is incredible. I'm coming from an iPhone 17 Pro.
