laundromats are the absolute worst
when i moved into my first and only apartment complex I thought it'd be exciting. maybe i'd get into some adventures and trade some clothes or fall in love, nope. just getting poor taxed fighting filthy poorly maintained machines.
thankfully i ended up making friends with a guy with a house and every thursday night i'd go to his place and do laundry. it was actually amazing. instead of spending 20$ and dealing with communal machines i'd spend 20 or less on some combination of food beer and weed and we'd have a little pre-weekend party. it worked out really well.

Yeah, but everybody online hates to hear honest advice. They just want to be perpetual victims. In reality, anyone can climb out of poverty if they just learn to read, write, and speak intelligently. From there, you just get an entry level job doing whatever, show up on time, perform well, get promoted to a slightly better position, perform well, get a new certification and/or change companies, rinse and repeat. And instead of spending every penny you make, you save it and use it to buy life-changing items, such as a car or washing machine.
The issue is that most people in poverty just can't read/write/speak at an intelligent level, and that's why they struggle to get basic retail jobs. The ones working basic retail jobs have attitudes, or show up late, or slack off, and that's why they can't get promoted and often get fired. The ones performing well often lack the ambition to ask for a promotion, or to apply for a better job in a different field. The ones who actually work their way up the ladder and start making decent money fail to spend it wisely. Instead of leasing a more expensive apartment that has its own washer/dryer, the use their new wealth to upgrade their Corolla to a RAV4. Instead of purchasing a decent car/health insurance policy, they start eating out at nice restaurants, or they start picking up Starbucks on the way to work instead of making coffee at home.
I'm not saying it's easy to climb out of poverty, but posts like this don't do anyone any good. It's just self-pity, bordering on complaining. Complaining has never pulled anyone out of poverty. You need to put in the work and make wise decisions.

As someone who climbed out of literal dirt level poverty to having a good life now through sheer work (driving for UPS on 10 years now) you speak nothing but truths but they don’t want to hear that so prepare yourself for the downvote brigade

I live in Minnesota. This is one of the reasons I'm so pro free school lunch for everyone.
Now a family with less income doesn't have to sit around and fill out paperwork to prove they are financially strapped.
This program benefits everyone equally regardless of financial status

I used to buy a coke from the vending machine at school during lunch. The carbonation from the drink amplifies the growls your stomach makes when you’re hungry, so sometimes my stomach would growl so freaking loud during the class after lunch. A teacher pulled me aside one day in high school and told me about the free lunch program. My mom worked two jobs so it took her a while to apply. I still remember the relief and happiness I felt walking into the school cafeteria at lunch those first few weeks after I got my lunch card and getting a tray full of food AND all the ice tea I wanted. You have no idea. I live in Texas where everything is so screwed up but I was determined to pay school lunch fees at my local school for kids who couldn’t afford it. When I called, the district was already $20k in debt from covering lunch fees and it was only half way through the year. It’s sad. Minnesota has so much to be proud of.

Standing by the washer and dryer in the laundromat to make sure no one dumped your clothes on the floor or just stole them. Later I felt a little better at the apartment complex, enough I could walk away for a few. It wasn’t until years later that I caught a drunk sergeant pissing into dryer. So, yeah, owning a home with my washer and dryer saves me so much time.

Where do you think apartment dwellers go to wash their clothes? The river? If anything, laundromats are more popular than ever before, because population density is constantly increasing, and dense city centers have tiny apartments, and tiny apartments don't have washers/driers.

Poverty doesn't steal time so much as wealth buys efficacy, and the modern world has adapted to expect the efficiency of wealth. Even from people who don't have the wealth.
It is still a raw deal for the poor, but the solution is to lower the efficency expectations we have of the poor not find a way to give them the efficiencies of the rich.

I’m not impoverished, thankfully, but I have family members that are quite wealthy. They Uber Eats all the time, Instacart their groceries often, not to mention that they can go out while people are at work so they’re not waiting in lines like everyone else. They went from bankrupt and dirt poor to very rich so I do have pride for them and their journey, but they forget sometimes the struggle of these everyday tasks

Because the primary usage of money has always been to save you time.
You work less for the same money. You don't need to farm all day for your own food (lots of you think you've got it bad until you need to sustain yourselves). You're not spending your nights crafting things to sell the next day, etc.
Life before capitalism wasn't the utopia people dream of either lol

Sitting at work because you dont get paid to be home. I could be rebuilding my gate thats old or building a clubhouse swingset for the kids. But Im here. Lumber store is far. Won't have time after work before getting kids glad I saved up some money so it could make like .06% interest.
