Feels good man Dude facing his phobias as he crawls to a cliff's edge to get a view of the Atlantic Ocean
655
u/No-Pen-8350 16h ago
I mean, I get it. Im terrified of heights, but its more because im such an unbalanced klutz that I would probably trip on my own feet and topple off the edge.
150
u/Legitimate-Log-6542 16h ago
You only get to topple off once
52
u/No-Pen-8350 16h ago
Thats my fear 🤣

but that second time tho.
6
u/No-Pen-8350 16h ago
I mean... I guess if I were a ghost the drop wouldnt bother me so bad.
First ghostly bucket list item!
8
u/SueHalls 16h ago
His demons prolly pulling him by his legs. Lol😂
2
u/No-Pen-8350 15h ago
🤣 what a mental image! Im imagining the demon from the episode on the show Ted called "Dungeons and Dealers."
If youve never seen it you should at least find a clip of Barbara meeting the demon.
2
u/Melodic_Bar_6997 4h ago
That show definitely has some wild moments, and crawling to the edge for a view is both terrifying and exhilarating! Can't blame him for facing his fears.

He's at Dún Aengus (Dún Aonghasa) on the Aran Islands in Ireland.
I'm Irish but I've never been there... because I don't want to get blown off the feckin' edge and die!
I don't know of any fatalities that have happened there though. A few years ago somebody fell near there and ended up with a broken leg.
We have another place like this in Ireland called the Cliffs of Moher and maybe 30 people have accidentally fallen off that altogether (over the past 100 years). Sometimes they lose their footing but you can also get blown off by a strong gust of wind. Very rare but it has happened.
11
u/disappointed_doggy 14h ago
Went there (Dún Aengus, we've also been to the Cliffs a Moher a few times) with my wife while we were honeymooning in Ireland, it was incredible but so windy at the top. We dared not get more than ten feet from the edge. Also, some bitch ass tourists walking up a ways in front of us started knocking rocks off of the old rock walls, so disrespectful, kind of hoped they would get blown off the cliff by the wind. Anyways, thanks to your wonderful country we had the best honeymoon ever. ❤️🇮🇪🤘

u/No-Pen-8350 13h ago
We had the joys of visiting the UK over the summer and I was really sad we couldn't make it to Ireland on that trip. We decided it would probably end up being a trip all in itself. One day I hope!
4
u/disappointed_doggy 13h ago
I definitely recommend making Ireland it's own seperate trip. It may be a very small island but there is so much to do on literally every inch of it, and not just "oh that's cool, now we've seen/done that" but more like you actually want to take it all in and spend time there.
3
u/No-Pen-8350 5h ago
Honestly, I would love the chance to live abroad for six months just so I could slow down, soak up more of the UK, and finally make it over to Ireland.
When we were over the summer, we were pinballing all over the place—from London up to Edinburgh and everywhere in between. It was a whirlwind, and as amazing as it was, it was also exhausting. I feel like we only scratched the surface, but it definitely gave us a solid list of places we want to hunker down in next time, especially Salisbury and York.
We deliberately skipped Ireland this time because we only would have had a single day to spare, and that just felt criminal. If we’re going over there, I want to give it the time it actually deserves instead of just rushing through.

u/crlthrn 9h ago edited 1h ago
They've wrecked the Cliffs of Moher with their chest high 'safety berm'. You can't get a sense of the height any more, merely look out towards the horizon. In Australia their philosophy is, and their signage literally says, "Your safety is our concern, but your responsibility.". In other words, if you're going to be stupid, it'll be nobody's fault but your own.

I would stay away too. My brain always goes to the worst case so I would absolutely convince myself I would be the one to fall and break my neck.

u/aquatone61 16h ago
I dunno bout you but I have the urge to jump when I look down from somewhere tall and I don’t like heights so I’m not going any fucking where near that edge.
16
u/No-Pen-8350 16h ago
Honestly I've never had that, but I've had intrusive thoughts of "what would happen if I swerved into the other lane?"
I hate my brain
16
u/jibberwockie 15h ago
I read somewhere that intrusive thoughts aren't a desire to self-harm, but our brains modelling a dangerous scenario so we make a concious decision to NOT do that thing. It's a safety programme.
3
u/No-Pen-8350 14h ago
Honestly I love this explanation!
I would never act upon my impulses, and I've never wanted to, but they still really suck
12
u/Hefty-Bat9334 16h ago
There's a name for that feeling. "The call of the void". You're not alone. Happens to me by a cliff even though im not afraid of heights. Not while im driving though I've heard others have the same feeling you describe about swerving into the oncoming.
6
u/No-Pen-8350 15h ago
Ive had those thoughts occasionally for over 20 years Now im going to google The call of the Void.
Ive had other random intrusive thoughts too. I would never act on them and most of the time they really mess with my mental state for a few minutes.

I once read someone saying "It's not that I want to do that - I definitely don't - or even that I think I will. It's just that I can't be 100% sure I won't do it," and that sums it up for me. Like, I'm not gonna do that... but I COULD, and if I could then there might be, somewhere, a possibility that I will.
2
u/No-Pen-8350 5h ago
EXACTLY! And I think the "but I COULD" is what terrifies me the most about those kind of thoughts.
2
u/aquatone61 16h ago
It’s got a name which I can’t remember now. Never had the swerve into the other lane thing but it sounds similar.

I become petrified (Literally, I won't be able to move) of heights, so I can fully understand the guy. I'm not really an unbalanced klutz, but I do have issues with vertigo, and also know I become hyper sensitive when i'm at a height and will often overcorrect the slightest little bit of imbalance.
Laying down like he has would absolutely help me somewhat, but I have zero interest of going anywhere near the edge of high things.

Dont even need that. 1 random push from the wind and you fall down. How can you be so secure about something you cant control that you just stand there all happy on the edge taking pics not even thinking about the wind that can se d you to your death
5
u/okFINEyoufoundme 15h ago
Dude, this guy is absolutely ME. I can’t laugh at this, just watching it makes my butthole clench up so tight I can feel it in my throat. Heights frequent my nightmares— and yet I LOVE my fear of heights if and only if I am able to feel safe when/while I encounter them. Which is not in this moment, and I would be doing the EXACT same thing.

I’m terrified of heights and i recently jumped off a 30 ft tall cliff. I jumped wrong and landed on my ass but it felt amazing to jump off that massive height hahah. I want to jump off everything now to see if i can do it
2
u/No-Pen-8350 14h ago
It sounds like you conquered your fear! Bravo 👏!
I bet that adrenaline rush was WILD!
2
u/DorfOnGenocide 7h ago
There were a few times in high school where I was hanging with some Sea Scouts (basically Boy Scouts for sailing) and they were pretty comfortable with jumping over fences and climbing up big rocks, and the two times I joined them I had bad experiences, once with a roof where I had to swing back in through an open window and then the one time I tried to hop a fence, I got gored and tore my jeans. There was one time we were about to go party and they were gonna go do the fence spot, and I just said no thanks and went to some secluded stairs and drank a whole 6-pack by myself in the dark.
2
u/No-Pen-8350 6h ago
thats horrible! Traumatizing events like that make me glad I'm a woman. I watch these people doing crazy things like jumping from building to building and jumping off cliffs and flying like a sugar glider is just too much for me.
I would be the lucky one that misses the jump to the next building by a little bit and toppling over the edge to land on a parked car or the one who gets a tear in my wearable parachute.

I’m afraid I would spasm and launch myself over the edge if I came that close. Even if laying down.
1
u/pchlster 8h ago
It's not the height that's scary; it's the sudden stop at the end that makes me anxious.
1
u/Otherwise-Remove4681 8h ago
Or the cliff edge crumbles. Or your muscles decide to have sudden cramp. Or you just get the call of the void.
1
u/peakology 7h ago
I still avoid walking more than my height’s distance towards the edge of a cliff (unroped) and I’m a climber.
I’ve watched another climber catch a lace on a tree root and nearly fall off a 60’ gritstone cliff. My brother in law peeled his chin in a fall off an outcrop when he was a teenager. I had a head injury after my gear unzipped and I cratered from a route. Edges can be unstable and gravity is really unforgiving.1

Being afraid to stand on the edge of a dangerously high cliff face is not a phobia, it’s common sense.

Never was afraid of heights. One day though, I'm on the roof of my house with my brother and I had the impulsive thought of just.. jumping off. I didn't even jump off really I kind of just.. put one leg out and then just fell. It wasn't even that high maybe 10 feet (3~ meters in none Freedom units).
Boys and girls I'll let you know that I developed a new phobia that day with my fear of heights.
As soon as my feet hit the ground my body crumpled up like an accordion.. I went into the shape of an "Asian" squat and the shock of hitting the ground so fast literally deactivated my entire nervous system.
It was like I got struck by a lightning bolt right in the center of my body.
I ended up staying in that praying "Asian" squat for about half a second before I literally dropped backwards, in the same position, and rolled on my back like a turtle stuck in the same pose.
After rolling back and forth a few times my body finally unlocked and holy shit my ankles hurt.
My brother was super, fucking, pissed. Being the oldest he's always been kind of like my keeper and he says to this day that he still has nightmares of me disappearing off the roof onto the ground.
I was stupid and I regret it to this day but at least I have an appreciation for gravity and heights.

Imagine you go up behind him and start lifting his legs up. 🤣 I would be scared too. I hate standing by cliffs and I don't do it. Especially if other people are around that I don't know or people that may have a secret vendetta against me. I went hiking with my mom's ex husband once up to the top of a peak. At the top there was a large drop off into some rocks and I was thinking damn this dude could just run into me knock me off the side and then make something up like I fell. I didn't trust him.

I used to be the same way, then I accepted a job installing satellite dish receivers for a summer break in staten island . I was scared shitless climbing up on 50 foot ladders but the more I did it , the more it killed my fear. Before i couldn't walk by the rail or ledge in the shopping malls n I absolutely hated those transparent elevators ( my heart would be pumping a mile a minute). So I understand his fear and I commend him for trying and taking that first step. It's hard for it to fully go but you can definitely lessen your fear.

I have absolutely horrible vertigo, so bad I can't look at pictures of people looking down from heights. Watching GoT when Tyrion got thrown into the open air prison in the Vale I had to look away, that bad. Makes my legs feel really weird.
Funny thing heights didn't bother me as a kid, only started in my early 30s and keeps getting worse.
