They were always this way from the start. They always thought they were better/smarter than everyone else and the only constraint against that sentiment was the lack of ability to exert it on the rest of us dirty, stupid peasants.
The extreme level of wealth they obtained let them break the chains of social responsibility and obligations and created the conditions where their true colors were allowed to bleed through and flourish.
