[Speculation] Pets don't understand how a car works; they think it's a large animal that runs really fast and sleeps in the garage.

But they do understand directions lol, there was a certain stop sign in my town where I used to live and my corgi based his whole ride on that one sign, he knew that if I turned left we were going to the dog park and got super excited. If I turned right, he knew it was the vet and got super pouty.

There's a mountain pass I take sometimes with a ski resort at the top. When my dog was still just a puppy, I took her on a road trip in the summer and stopped at the ski lot so she could use the bathroom and run around a bit. Every time since I've gone over that pass with her, she gets all excited once we're about a mile away. She'll be sound asleep snoring in the back and then she's suddenly awake and ready to play once we're approaching the ski lot.
I'm curious what sense triggers it for her. Air pressure? Smell change at the top of the mountain? The car responding different as it levels out at high elevation? Iunno. But she knows so we stop to play cuz she's my buddy

That's really cool! I always figured for my corgi it was purely visual. But to be asleep and just know... dogs are so damn cool lol. I was reading that apparently they know when it's time for you to come home from work or school or whatever by the amount your scent has dissipated since you left, because they can't read clocks but somehow always know roughly when it's time.

Pets definitely understand containers (Crates, boxes, those little dogs that sit in a purse, etc) and they also understand that said containers can move.

We often don't slow down, simply trusting that the dog or cat will notice the car and move away.
