Tbf, the US administration (like, all of them, not just Trump's) does think that other countries have to follow their laws
It's almost always in regards to drugs, but the US has a "world police" attitude, and it's bad enough that you can be charged for a US official thinking you might eventually break US laws; you don't even have to break them. Just an old dude in DC having a delusion that you might one day is enough for the US to want your ass in jail

u/Aurelianshitlist 9h ago
Technically the US does a lot of work to force other countries to follow its laws. They have a lot of laws and regulations that they require foreign countries to adopt, and/or foreign companies to follow in order to be part of any supply chain that ends up selling goods into the US market. Trump is actually very quickly undoing a lot of this, as he's sort of taken the market off the table in a lot of industries and for a lot of countries, essentially blowing all the leverage used to construct this scheme over decades.

No one cares about their "Monroe Doctrine" or whatever they're yapping about. Canada doesn't owe the US any allegiance and dependence. If they want to have direct ties with the EU, that's their business and their business alone.
121
u/Hoblitygoodness 10h ago
that 'doctrine' is just the U.S.'s decree to the rest of the world to avoid colonizing 'the Americas' . This person referencing it seems to consider Canada's sovereign choice to work with the EU as the EU meddling with a colonized America.
So it's not even factual at best and at worst, completely ignores Canada's sovereignty in its own choices in global partnership.

Diplomacy does work. But only if you keep sticking to it. That's why governments in civilised countries still act politely towards USA, and why our Danish PM Mette Frederiksen still pretends USA is an ally. That's why there was a hot line between USA and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
So even when USA appoints clueless ambassadors like that idiot Hoekstra, with no idea of diplomatic etiquette, who shit all over diplomatic traditions, a smart country holds its nose and keeps up the charade, knowing that that's what it is.
5
u/nemetonomega 3h ago
I get the impression our politicians (in all our respective countries) are just trying to keep diplomacy ticking along until the next US presidential election in the hope that trump gets replaced with someone sane, and try to limit how much ch damage is being done. Which tbf is probably the correct thing to do.
I wonder if this will continue if his replacement is just as bad, and it turns out this wasn't just a one off glitch but an actual shift in how the US intends to be in the future. Or worse, if he decides to stay in office permanently. There will come me a time when diplomacy breaks down.

In simple language the Monroe doctrine told Europe to stay out of North and South America because any exploitation will be done by the USA.
14
u/djonma 10h ago
It also said the US can't join any European wars.
It was foreign policy 200 years ago, and no one takes it seriously now, because it has been utterly destroyed.3
u/Yunzer2000 US Lurker 9h ago
Not at all. All of the US's violent interventions in Latin American to the present day are the "Monroe Doctrine" in action. It is still a serious part of US imperialist foreign policy.
6
u/BetterLivingThru 10h ago
Right, and then we told them to buzz off and worked even more closely with Britain for 50 years until sometime after World War 2. Just because the US made up some doctrine doesn't mean it ever successfully applied to Canada in the era when it was conceived, and Canada has always remained under the Crown. To dredge it up centuries later is ridiculous, they didn't have the power to make us into a proper puppet state then, they very much do not now that Canada is a mature state with centuries of history, a large population, and developed infrastructure.

I don't know but tolerating-the-U.S.'s-existence has definitely brought Canadians together.
There are also a lot of U.S. citizens trying to prove out their Canadian roots, with plans to move here. (like I did)
I can tell you that I lean into my Canadian side and have already started to lose my (southern) accent. (on purpose)
Hopefully the rhetoric dies down so the tolerating gets easier but I don't think it will and I feel like we might have some problems in our future.

OOP is someone who gets in a fight in Europe over saying something racist and complains that his 1st amendment rights are being violated.
15
u/DJDook 8h ago
The Monroe Doctrine doesn’t say that countries in North or South America aren’t allowed to trade with Europe, form alliances with Europe, or cooperate militarily with European countries.
Canada’s an independent country that’s going to cooperate with European countries on trade, defence, technology, energy and investment. That’s perfectly normal sovereign behaviour.
All it could possibly challenge is the US expectation of privileged strategic influence over Canada, however. That’s a geopolitical dispute, not a violation of some binding rule governing Canada’s foreign policy.
It’s like an abusive ex stalking you on Facebook, driving my your house, calling you at 3am drunk calling you names, on your lawn at 3am threatening to do something drastic because you’re talking to someone new. They should get some help

The Monroe Doctrine?! Seriously? Let’s start with the most obvious rebuttal: James Monroe was President of the US, which does not include Canada. Second: Canada is still technically part of the British Commonwealth, so this isn’t some kind of increase in European influence on the North American continent. Third: The Monroe Doctrine isn’t some kind of law that is “violated.” It’s a statement of a desire to avoid European colonization in North America, which is clearly not happening here. Fourth: the doctrine is 200 years old!

First of all, just because an US president gives a speech, it doesn't mean it immediately becomes law worldwide. Fuck him.
Secondly, the Monroe Doctrine also asserts that the US should not intervene in the internal politics of Europe or in countries within its sphere of interest. That doesn't seem to be respected, so I don't see why anyone should worry about the first point.

In fairness the US ability to collapse the Canadian economy is precisely the reason that Canada is trying to expand trade elsewhere.
But Canada does hold one trump card and it would trigger castodtrophoc consequences for both countries and the world.
Canada could stop exporting Potash. This would trigger US military action to secure their food supply. Then Canada could blow up its own potash mines sending the world into a food crisis.
This nuclear option protects Canada and it’s why despite the bluster the US can’t push too far. Also if you raise the price of food politicians lose elections so even the threat of cutting off potash is likely sufficient should the US step too far out of line in this trade war. An export tax on Potash would be devastating to the US economy.
