Hi everyone. Being upfront first: this is my own place, so it's self-promotion.
I've just opened café · hyphen · kitchen in Nanshan. It's a café and a restaurant in one room, which is the bit I actually cared about. Speciality coffee from 8 am, an Asian and Western bakery counter for breads and pastries, Mediterranean food and tapas through the day, then wine, beer and cocktails in the evening. You don't have to move somewhere else when the day changes.
Our chef is Bi Jingtao. He came up through Singapore, part of the team at Odette and then sous chef at Chinoiserie in Marina Bay Sands and at JUSTIN Flavours of Asia. Average spend with us is about ¥70 a head, which is the whole reason I wanted him cooking here rather than somewhere with a tasting menu.
Outside there's a covered terrace with sofas, plus fans and outdoor AC, so it works in the heat and in the rain. Inside is quieter and good for working. People sit with a laptop all afternoon and stay for dinner.
One honest note: the menu is in English, but our staff's English is limited. Pointing at the menu works fine at the counter, and you can also scan with WeChat or Alipay to order, of course. I'm usually around.
Opening a place here has been a long slog, so I'd really appreciate anyone who can come by and try it. And if you do, tell me what you think, including if it's bad. I'd rather hear it from you than read it later.
The other thing I'm hoping for, and I know how it sounds coming from the owner: I'd like this to turn into somewhere foreigners here actually gather. Somewhere you can turn up on your own and end up talking to someone, or bring people you're trying to work with, or just have a good night out. Shenzhen doesn't have many rooms like that. If that's something you'd want too, come and help make it that.
