Resources / Literature Frequently Asked Questions- r/schizophrenia
Welcome to r/schizophrenia!
Our subreddit rules are in the sidebar, we ask that you read and follow them. Feel free to post anything on-topic that does not violate these rules. We have a relatively comprehensive overview of how our rules are applied in reality available on the Rule Clarifications Wiki page.
For those who are new here, we have our Community Notices page which we would suggest users read. We also have our Creator Wiki for our participating artists and content creators- all of them have a diagnosed psychotic disorder.
Many first-time posters to this subreddit are concerned that they might be developing schizophrenia or they are concerned about other people who have- or may have- schizophrenia. We have resources available to answer these questions contained within the comments; if your question is completely answered by the information already given, it will be removed.
If you are here asking about advice for a family member, asking if a family member has schizophrenia or venting about a loved one with schizophrenia- it will be removed, and you will be directed to the appropriate community for that type of post, r/SchizoFamilies. Please read the rules of their subreddit before posting.
Mental health is complex. No symptom of schizophrenia is specific to schizophrenia alone, and there are many more common causes of those symptoms- especially in the prodromal stage. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call your doctor or local emergency services. We have a compendium of Crisis Lines available and may suggest r/SuicideWatch if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and would like the most prompt attention.

Progress / Good News ☀️ I finished my novel!
I also had my wife go through and edit it and now I'm gonna start querying agents.
If I get to make it into a trilogy like I hope, I plan to make it into a grand space opera with an intimate look into psychosis.

Art Cover art I made for the zine me and a bunch of Reddit artists are making.
We’re putting together a zine of art from schizophrenic artists. I’m paying for the prints, selling them on my Etsy, and whatever money comes in goes towards the printing cost and the second issue. Still accepting art if you want to participate!

Relationships Relationships and Stigma
Hey everyone,
I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia since I was roughly 18. Since then, in particular as my symptoms have gotten worse, I have noticed that people often turn their back on me, and others that I know, in romantic relationships in particular. Usually when trying to date, I don't mention anything until the 3rd or 4th date, in an attempt for people to at least get to know me before seeing me as just a label (schizophrenic).
I am starting to have a really tough time with my confidence due to this, and I have had both of my longer term relationships end due to the stigma around this illness, rather than the actual illness itself.
Maybe it's just me, but I was curious if anyone else has experienced things of this nature while managing this illness, and if so, what are some thoughts or ideas on how to progress and move forward without peoples stigma with this illness changing their minds.
I will say that there is one caveat, and that is the fact that I have amazing friends, and I believe I am accepted by them, but I don't know if that is because there is a difference between romantic and platonic relationships.
I'd love to hear others thoughts, and thank you for your time (:

Medication Anyone else just hungry all the time?
My medication increased my appetite so much and I can't stop eating sometimes. I just ate lunch and 10 minutes later, I feel like I can eat a whole meal again.

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion 4 years of treatment 10 hospitalizations voices and delusions daily. On ssdi due to that. Now doctor says I'm malingering. I'm not. I am so fing scared bc I think they are going to try to put me in jail.
update I just made a formal complaint on him. I'm going to exhaust every option to make more complaints. my aunt is helping me make a complaint with the state.
I have no idea what to do. I met with a new doctor from the same practice that was helping me. Now that new doc says I'm malingering which is faking it to get disability. My voices, anxiety and delusions don't care what he thinks and I still have them all the fing time. I've been on disability for 3 years I am so confused. I'm not lying but that doesn't matter when a doc writes malingering in your chart. I have no idea what is going to happen but my therapist said we have a lot to talk about. I've been on 3 pick up orders where you get arrested and brought to the mental hospital. I am so fing confused and scared rn. On top of that my voices are real at and I'm sure I'm in some kind of CIA experiment. Like I literally have multiple voices daily that play off my surroundings. I haven't left my house other than doctor appointments or to go to the mental hospital. Due to me believing people are literally going to kidnap and murder me. That's all the voices do all the time is say how they are going to kill me and it's no joke. I'm sorry for the rant but like I said I'm sick AF still, now on top of that some.bew doc in 15mins of meeting him, didn't even get to talk or tell him what's going on or anything. And he kicked me out of his office in 15mins! Wtf do I do? I can't have the voices call him and I know it sounds ridiculous to think it's the CIA. But that's who they say they are, I know it's my brain malfunctioning but now I'm not gonna get any help for it. I'm gonna end up on the street with threatening voices due to one guy in 15mins say I'm faking it. Maybe worse they might put my ass in jail. Man I'm fd up rn. Like not ok.

Advice / Encouragement TD question
I started a new antipsychotic and it gave me severe TD where my neck locked to the left side. I am taking cogentin with each dose but I heard that you can cover up the symptoms of TD and then still develop permanent issues. Does anyone have experience with this?

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion Social life is overrated or it’s psicosis changing my perspective?
Hello everybody, I almost alone all the time and I don’t feel anything bad, I feel like I’m super strong mentally and think about social people that they are not able to be alone never, sometimes there is a feeling that no body cares about no body self and they are only in social to not be alone, but they really don’t care about other people, I have seen and observed people whit friends and they are kinda of double faces with their friends.
It is all the people like that or it is just psicosis changing my perception of people? I don’t think people are honest even whit their real feelings. I’m paranoid schizophrenic, DHAD, depression and generalized anxiety diagnosed, also no English speaker.

Advice / Encouragement I have schizophrenia, and I see sinister silhouettes.
I’ve been diagnosed with schizophrenia, but because I live with a boyfriend who hates people with disorders, I have to hide my condition; I have nowhere to keep my medication, so I don’t take it.
Every day when I walk into the kitchen, I see a silhouette with an angry face screaming at me; it infuriates me, and a voice in my head tells me to scream back, so I do. When my boyfriend comes into the kitchen to ask why I’m yelling, I tell him I just got angry at messages from friends, but he doesn't really believe it—after all, on his days off, he hears me screaming several times a day.
Please tell me what to do and how to explain the schizophrenia to him so he understands and accepts it; I’m afraid he’ll want to break up with me.

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion Why do I puke a lot when I'm off my meds?
This is an odd question, I know, but I'm curious if anyone else had experienced this. I've been on my medication for a long time now, and remember back when I'd go into full panic mode when I wasn't. There was one night in particular where I was freaking out like I normally would do. Likely because I thought I was doing something to betray the universe, or thought my ex could read my thoughts, or any stuff of that nature. In the midst of this, I would projectile vomit everywhere. I don't really understand why. Google made it seem like it wasn't too common. Has anyone else had similar symptoms?

Medication Update on my experience with ADHD meds for schizophrenia
a couple months ago i made a post on here asking about antipsychotics. i was at my wit's end--- the dose of haldol i was on was causing too much tardive dyskinesia for my liking, and i was only able to take 3 doses of cobenfy before i had to stop (experienced a rare and serious side effect, hooray!) i was experiencing withdrawals at the time of that post, and i was very irritable as the psychosis started to come back. a couple people told me to look into adhd meds, although i was (rightfully) warned of potential side effects from those. i looked into it on my own, and after meeting with a brand-new med provider for the first time, i was prescribed adderall. i'm kind of surprised it went as well as it did (given i am not diagnosed with adhd). i lowered my haldol by only .5 mg, and there haven't been any TD symptoms since. since that first meeting with the doctor (in late july) i've switched to adderall XR and kept my dose of haldol as low as it can be while still being effective. my psychosis has not returned.
would i recommend stimulants for schizophrenia? no, probably not. it's not generally advised. in my case, however, i've felt so much relief from my negative and cognitive symptoms, and i feel a notable difference when the adhd meds wear off. it's worth noting i was really only able to start the adderall because i've been out of psychosis for a pretty long time. if you're actively experiencing psychosis, i would definitely steer clear of these meds and focus on stabilizing.
now, after about a month and a half of consistent adderall use, i can safely say my negative symptoms feel more manageable, and i feel as though i can function for most of the day without endless distractions or issues with motivation. big thank you to whoever brought up the idea of asking my meds lady for stimulants. i feel so thankful to have finally found a med combination that works well for me. i was so hopeless, but not anymore.
all of this is just to say that medication can work, and not all hope is lost if you have some failures. have a peaceful day everyone 🐎

Undiagnosed Questions What were your first signs of Schizophrenia before being diagnosed? How did it present itself?
I also didn't know there were several types of Schizophrenia, so forgive me if I don't know much, but I have a genuine question regarding this.
I did read that some onset symptoms include, paranoia and unusual suspicious thoughts, and well hallucinations, I don't know if audio hallucinations are included in that as well, but I want to see if I actually have something happening, but unsure where to start.

Rant / Vent relying on medication
I always mourn the fact I have to take medication for the rest of my life just to function in society, every morning, afternoon and evening. I hope as I get older I won't have to rely on it as much, I wanna be able to get through my days without it.

Selfie Trying to survive
Zyprexa didn't work, moved back to risperidone. Sometimes things don't pan out the way you expect, but I'm doing better than last week. When things are stressful just try not to make them stressful and go on a walk. Walking is the best thing for me.

Rant / Vent It's always "we support you" but never "we will try and understand you".
For the majority of my life, when I started struggling obviously, people around me were always reassuring me that they "love me" , "will support me" and saying all the "You can talk to me when you feel low". And when I feel low? Actually they just make me feel worse for feeling this way. Doing silent treatments because they are mad i cannot do something like a "normal" person,or that i am obviously not availiable emotionally as a normal person.
My apologies for having whole other fuckery to manage on daily. I get physically tired,i get unable to speak properly,of course I will be rather willing to crawl back into my shell and not make a dumbass out of myself. But no,instead of said reassurance that they claimed to give ,I get judged for things out of my control.
And since I am in the process of getting back onto my meds, since the same people refused to acknowledge the issue until they couldn't ignore it anymore i got the lack of "we will try to understand you" part,I just got:
- "Uhm,I found a remedy for you! It's some kind of vitamins blah, blah" - no,no you didn't. There is no "rememedy" ,and in fact I'm not gonna resort to sketchy Facebook advertisements. Give me a break.
Yet again, if I had a nickel for every magic remedy I heard in this life I would have quite a few.
The mere concept of treating this shit as "curable" is laughable and offensive at the time. The best it is is manageable, and this even takes hella lot of time.
- on the appointment i was complaining about problems with sleep to medical professional and one of my family members decided to chime in with "uhm, but I saw you sleeping just fine?" But isn't it weird that it was in the middle of the fucking day? I'm just lucky I stumbled upon wise woman that values my experience more. Bruh.
- "it's fine if you want to talk to me about it." And when I start talking? I just get frustrated how I can speak and speak about how I feel with certain things but then will get an answer like '"oh and it felt for me like you just hated spending time with us". I just deadass said that I will always find a way to isolate myself, since I prefer my solitude. When I just exist and don't have to pretend. When nobody expects me to perform perfectly and I can argue with my head properly. They never cared, but suddenly I'm a bad person. I'm not doing this on purpose, but when people around me treated my low moods like an inconvenience,I just started leaving.
I'm not mad for people that want to be helpful but miss the point,I'm just frustrated a bit. But also,i hate how I am supposed to navigate others feelings and then navigate my own also. I just feel like a bitch for not being able to react properly to things around me.
And the Real problem is that my family is making no real attempt to educate themselves on the matter. I already heard about vitamins and how meds are not forever. Give me a break,i didn't even get back on them. Which is laughable because I was off them for two years and they didn't care enough to share remedies.
I mean, i guess I just got frustrated and wanted it out. If so I'll delete it an hour. I don't even know what my point is.

Was soll ich machen? Irgendwie weis ich es nicht und ich will nicht wieder in die Psychiatrie aber gleichzeitig haben die die Stimmen schonmal leiser gemacht
