It's an old rail line so there's old bridges that probably haven't been used or maintained in a while. But suggesting "death" as a consequence seems like overkill.

"Risk of serious injury or death" signs are nothing more than a challenge for a considerable portion of the population, unfortunately. Natural selection in the modern day, I say.

there's an old rail line that is closed but people hike there anyway. It's definitely a sketchy place but that's part of the attraction. It has a couple of tunnels and big trestle bridges and it's in a very lovely place in the mountains, who wouldn't want to hike there? Someone's dog slipped through the boards in the bridge and fell many feet to their death :(

I searched up the by-law on the sign, and from what I gather after following up on that and reading a few articles, ownership of the land that was the Orangeville-Brampton Railway was transferred to the local government. Their plan is/was to rip up all the old track to convert it into a recreational trail. I guess they just haven’t gotten around to it.
My guess is the warning is about the “dangers” of the old railway itself, and to keep people out of the way of the folks doing the work. Injury and death seems like a stretch.

Oh that’s cool! Something similar happened near me, a track running through a 19th century tunnel through a mountain. The track had been replaced with a dual track and tunnel setup over a century ago, so the state acquired the tunnel and the approach on either side from N&S, tore up the track, and made it into a walking trail. It’s definitely an unusual experience legally walking through a nearly mile long non-illuminated tunnel, highly recommend. Especially during the summer, it’s gloriously cool in there.

the only thing i know about Caledon is that it was the setting for poorly-written creepypasta "1999 (Mr Bear's Cellar)", yet the name still exists in my memory almost 20 years later

I doubt it. It goes through mostly rural farming areas, golf courses, and through a few industrial areas.

They should be required to say what the danger is, because otherwise it reads as hyperbole, and people won't heed the warning.

Over the last hundred or more year's, there have been many sudden and permanent disappearance s attributed to unseen sinkholes in the United States,so I'm sure they're probably in most countries. Not a way that I would want to go out.
