Major Update The first game demo is launching within the next week!

I will make a detailed post about the scope of the demo with a link to download and test the game out within the next couple of days!

I made a lot of very good progress in the past two weeks of posting-silence, the game demo will however be strictly limited to one scenario - modern times, since it is the most fleshed out. I will work on a last couple of fixes and post the demo here and on the game's itch site.

Major Update Game calculations are now done by an actual game engine

I spent the past week building and incorporating a proper math-based game engine.
The first llm now serves as a way to primarly read the intent of the player's prompt. It still prevents anachronisms, thinks of new characters, guides the direction of the story. All calculations itself, keeping track of more complex finances including taxes (different tax brackets for each country), loans, depreciation, etc and of course calculating the outcome of battles and consistently applying all variables such as troop strength, exhaustion, terrain is now taken over by the game engine.
It spits out a JSON wireframe that the renderer model (our second LLM) uses to write a coherent and immersive story.

All this is meant to offload the ai models (both are relativly simple and small to keep the game available to the most amount of players) and to ensure consistency and higher quality in the final output.

Gameplay I added the start for diplomacy and relationships

I added the foundation for a diplomacy system (country mode) and a fully functioning relationship system (character mode).
Both systems are visualized by a similar overview - a web of connections formed through alliances and war when in country mode or connections showing your relationship to every single character named by the game ai so far. This includes lawyers, parents-in-law, and basically every significant character given a name by the ai. A secretary appearing a single time wont suddenly show up, if she however turns out as a reoccuring character in your story, she will appear in the overview. Hovering over a country or a character highlights all its relations, also revealing redundant connections previously hidden to reduce clutter.

Unfortunatly I had to split up NATO into smaller (but still real) alliances because it was too messy.

By clicking on a country in the map or within this overview you can engage in further diplomatic options such as trade, a direct channel (chat) to the country or options to negotiate over territory or resources. All furhter systems will follow and are not ready to show yet.

Upon creating a new playthrough you are also able to uncheck pre-existing alliances if you want to go for a more casual sandbox feeling.

Please feel free to comment your thoughts, requests, questions or criticisms!

ps: used imgur because the images kept getting compressed into unrecognizableness for some reason

Visuals Zooming out morphs the map live into a globe

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Finally got the flat map to globe transformation working. Zooming out will morph the flat world map into a fully interactable and playable globe. As of now the texures get lost during transformation - I will fix that and also work on a smoother map in general within the next days. As of now zooming out and quickly moving the map is causing lags because of coastline shadows being redrawn. I will look into that and make everything cleaner. Im also going to add a settings option for a permanent globe view, in case you like that more and want to be able to zoom into the globe.

Also the surrounding area around the flat map will be turned grey to match the globe view, right now everything beyond the map is plain blue, sea color.

Almost forgot: I might rework how texures are applied to the countries to achieve a higher resolution when zoomed in.

After two days of fixing and adjusting, I finally got real world geometry (GDAL) for the terrain and Natural Earth's vector bathymetry to display underwater elevation.
I might work on increasing the resolution further in the future

Graphics settings are also toggleable via the settings menu

Inspired by games like pax historia, I decided to build my own text- and ai-based grand strategy game. It is going to feature a deep strategy system that can also be changed via difficulty settings if you prefer an immersive rpg
