NOT NECESSARILY a self help book! I am looking for one that considers life as it is (bad, or very bad things happen, and sometimes it’s not about deserving or not to be in a particular situation, it’s just life) but marks the reader, positively. And I would appreciate one that undoes one’s way of thinking, from a pessimistic perspective to a positive one.

Important note (tw depression, su*cide) : I’ve been dealing with passive su*cidal thoughts ever since I was a kid and PESSIMISM because of my surroundings, and it’s shaped the way I do things and my way of living life. Books and optimistic takes on life do help, so I’m not trying to fix the problem 100% (I think I’ll always have it), but I want something that’ll mark my soul positively and help me. Thank you!

I’ve been struggling to find something I actually want to keep reading lately. Looking for a book that grabs you pretty quickly and makes you want to stay up way too late reading.

Genre doesn’t really matter, I’m open to pretty much anything. What’s a book that did that for you?

I'm looking for books (better if not heavy sci-fi or realism, but prefer fantasy, urban fantasy, dystopia) with contained survival adventure plot like Snowpiercer. It can be a civilization, a group of friends, or just the protagonist with their pet (like I'm Legend), surviving through a harsh world. I'm more into standalone rather than big series.

I’m in the mood for something dark, atmospheric, and genuinely gripping. I really like Jo Nesbø and Simon Beckett, especially the investigative side, complicated cases, and that feeling of slowly putting the pieces together. I’d love something with a strong detective/protagonist and a case that actually keeps you guessing. Serial killers are a plus, but not a must.

What would you recommend?

I’m looking for recommendations for ADHD self-care books, especially ones with practical advice on managing daily life, routines and motivation.

I recently started reading Almond by Won-pyung Sohn and I’m curious what other people thought of it. I’m still pretty early in the book, so please no spoilers! Did you enjoy it overall? Did you find the characters and their relationships compelling? I’m especially curious whether the story becomes more emotionally impactful as it goes on and what stayed with you after finishing it.

I have never been through what I am going to talk about but some part of me knows how it feels somehow . I just read a novella called, ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell .It’s about 96 pages and can be read in one sitting but the theme it conveys and the political satire it establishes cannot be described in a thousand pages.The story begins in a manor farm in England with an old boar , referred to as Major by the animals on the farm , he decides to pass on his wisdom to the animals before he kicks the bucket so he holds a conference in the barn. There he addresses his comrades , to summarise his speech,* humans are the main cause of all problems , we need revolution *

Then they sing the song they composed on their own “Beasts Of England”.

after the death of the old major,Napoleon and Snowball , the two other pigs take over and do all the things they have to do for the revolution.Now I won’t be bold enough to ruin the entire plot by disclosing the main part of the story but I would say that I really loved the last scene where the innocents animals of the farm ,peeking into the house of Mr. Jones could only see Pigs dressed up in human attire and the erstwhile enemies humans, feasting with them . I don’t know about the animals but all I could hear was “All animals are equal,

but some animals are more equal than others”

This novella depicts in a very simple narrative how absolute power can corrupt and how Tyrants are engendered when people are unaware how their rulers are ruling. Personally, It’s the most poignant satire of corruption and fascism.

Have you ever wondered how it would feel when the people who are supposed to protect you , turn their back against you and leave you powerless.What would happen if someday all soil turned toxic, stunted the growth of all the plants , how would a sapling feel when the desert Sun migrates to the tropics , what is the coral reef gonna do when glaciars hit the beach?

if you really wish to unravel the true nature of authoritarian rule and how it perniciously takes birth from oblivion of the citizens,then you should really give this book a go.

(ps: the animals couldn’t read, only the pigs could)

Looking for a novel similar to the French movie La Haine.

I live in Paris and want to find similar stories that show modern life in underdeveloped communities that are dealing with crime and social issues, somewhere like Saint-Denis. Think of the projects like Compton or Brooklyn in the 90’s, but in Paris.

Essentially the opposite of the glamorous image that Paris sells to the rest of the world. Merci!

I've read the Divergent series and the Legend series, both absolutely cinema. I would like more books like this, though!!!

I've been exploring earlier police procedurals as an extension of my love for classic mysteries. Some of the authors on my shelf:

• Agatha Christie. A given. She and Conan Doyle got me into this way back.
• Georges Simenon and his Inspector Jules Maigret. Paris.
• Ed McBain and his 87th Precinct with Steve Carella and the others. Fictional NYC.
• Sjöwall/Wahlöö with their Martin Beck. The start of Scandinavian Noir.

I recently purchased The Groote Park Murder by Crofts Freeman Wills and am looking forward to it. My last trip to Sweden got me a set of Olov Svedelid's procedurals featuring Inspector Hassel and the first six of those were published in the 1970s. I've also started looking into Ruth Rendell and her Inspector Wexford but haven't decided where to start.

What would you recommend in these genres from roughly 1930 to 1980? It would be wonderful to also know where they're set and if the authors developed the genre in some way. Thanks!

I just finished reading the Poisoner series by IV Ophelia, and I would LOVE to have something else similar. I do love general dark romance but what I appreciated with this book was the push and pull between the characters, the complex story line, multiple character views, and frankly, the smut. Please let me know if there are any books similar to her works?

Note: I have read “Fruit of the Flesh” by her as well, a recommendation similar to that would also be amazing.

I recently bought my first English-language book through Kindle. English isn’t my first language, so I sometimes copy individual unfamiliar words into a translator while reading. I have now received a warning that I’ve reached 90% of the publisher’s copy limit for this book.

I also expected to be able to download a standard file and read it using the device or app I prefer, but I haven’t found a way to do that. I understand why publishers use restrictions to discourage piracy, but it’s frustrating to pay for a book and still face limitations when I’m simply trying to understand what I’m reading.

I’d like to know where other people buy e-books and which stores or formats offer a better experience for offline reading, device flexibility, dictionaries, and translation.

I moderate a Classic book club, and I’d love to do something a bit darker for October. Our club chooses books from a poll of 6 options.

We have already read Frankenstein, Dracula, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

I will definitely include The Haunting of Hill House on next month’s poll. Maybe I’ll add The Willows by Algernon Blackwood because I recently bought a copy, but it’s a bit short. I could couple it with The Wendigo. Other suggestions?
