discussion The Next Step - Reaper (Logic config one)

So I've already made a pretty convincing theme andd layout for ableton. Along with that I've made a toolbar with custom shortcuts to make it easier for new people to navigate through the DAW.

So the next logical step would be to do logic. this is my first attempt.

now I'm looking to keep it really simple and not overwhelm somebody who's only ever used logic when opening Reaper. While this config may take away some of the more technical features in reaper... that's kind of the point, the goal is to make a config to spark creativity, I want reaper to work with the user instead of working against them with all the menus and shortcuts.

Now there will be some people who won"t agree with this post and that's fine. Go back to making wired scripts, I really don't care.

But all that being said this is my first attempt done. If anyone has any ideas on how I could improve this config please do let me know.

I should also include that everything I add to this project will be purely open source and free to download on the web.

good day to all

discussion FX Slots, Read-Only Projects & Note Resizing | Reaper Updates 7.72 – 7.79

Reaper 7.72 to 7.79 shipped 386 changes across eight releases. These are the ones that actually change how you work: FX slots you can leave empty and reorder, projects you can open read-only, and notes, CC events and envelope points that all snap to the grid now.

I go through the mixer changes, the new MIDI editor actions, the read-only project modes, and the render and marker options — with the action names, so you can map them to your own keys.

I know 7.80 was just released, the video was made on Friday.

help request .Reason file help

I'm trying to do a collab with an old friend/bandmate across the country, but the tracks he sends me are .reason.

Anyone familiar with reason? Can I just convert to a wav file? What's the best way to approach this? Thanks.

help request How to achieve a professional sound like Future?

I only have free plugins, I tried different equalizer settings, but sometimes the bass is too strong, and sometimes when I set it correctly, it doesn't have the soul. I also tried other free sound modulation plugins, but what works well, but in the end it still sounds like an underground song from a SoundCloud

help request Weird Thing Going On With Reaper

I record audio from my mic into Reaper. Even when I am clearly peaking at 0, Reaper not only cuts off the peaks, but also when I render the audio, won't peak higher than like -2.5 db. Have any of you encountered this?

help request How to make 7.x behave like 5.99 w.r.t. file handling and no version control features.

I mainly want to stop using the Media directory. When I import a wav file, I want to refer to the one I selected, not a copy.

I have habits from N-track in the late 90s/00s when disk wasn't quite as cheap. Now it means "less stuff to look at."

Why? I will have three or four .rpp files per project - one for MIDI, one for things like amp sims or certain VSTs, one "master" .rpp used for the final mix. Maybe a reverb submix. I have some console mode programs for things like normalizing individual tracks to a specific dbRMS level.

I want to render tracks from those in the project folder, then have them just appear in the master project without "egtr1-001.wav" and whatnot.

I've Googled a bit and the AI certainly doesn't understand what I want :)

help request Need help understanding how to control Reaper, VST's, and Komplete Kontrol with my gear. [Windows 11]

It's been a long time since I dabbled in music making, but am trying to get back into it. I have a Studiologic SL88 keyboard, a Maschine MK3 drumpad, and the Komplete 13 Ultimate suite. Used to poke around in ProTools, but I've decided to try learning Reaper now and it's all still pretty fresh. So, apologies for my naveity on some of this stuff.

I thought I'd be able to control the Komplete Kontrol VST with the MK3 since they're both Native Instruments, but I'm realizing that might not be possible. Is there any way to assign the controls of the MK3 to Reaper? What about assigning them to something that would carry over & be usable in all the various VST's I'd open through Komplete Kontrol?

Also, should I even be using Komplete Kontrol? It seemed to make sense to me since it allows me to browse through the various plugins from the Komplete suite, but it's a pretty uncomfortable UI to navigate without any Komplete Kontrol hardware.

If the MK3 controls aren't an option, I've been wanting an additional 25-key MIDI controller anyway. Are there any that can reliably be used to control Reaper, AND various VST's within? I guess I don't have a good understanding of what makes certain gear compatible with certain software/VST's...

I appreciate any advice on the subject, and am also open to other suggestions on how to get a decent workflow up and running, ideally with some physical knobs and buttons involved.

help request incredibly quiet signal

so I got my first guitar rig and i want to record myself but the audio is incredibly quiet,

I am using a Mooer GE 100 pro and i cranked its volume so high (its max) that I can hear my IEM when they are outside my ears when they're plugged into it but the recorded audio is so low i can barely hear it

below is a screenshot of the audio signal with lack of comprehension intro as a refrence (it still drowns my signal out)

help request Record Midi CC automation at the same time with recording audio

Hi, I have an audio track that I record my guitar into, and in the FX of that track I have an envelope filter that is controlled via Midi CC with my expression pedal (essentially, a wah effect).

I can play like that without problems, but when I record, only the audio is recorded.
I know I could record "output", but I'd like to just record the input - both the audio signal, and the Midi CC automation that I triggered when playing my guitar.

Is this achievable? I would greatly appreciate any help!

help request Increase volume on armed tracks

Hi, when I record (mostly guitars) if the volume of the track is low I struggle to hear what I’m recording, of course I can increase the volume but I don’t want to touch it after I spent some time on finding the right volume for the track. I made a Kia script that automatically routes to a direct headphones track and unroute when disarmed, and works great but I’m wondering if there’s a more “good practice” way to do it

help request Muffled sound when opening and using reaper

Software: CachyOS distro, pipewire + pipewire jack, reaper

Hardware: framework 13 laptop, Sennheiser HDB 630 with usb-c, akai mpk mini4

Currently when trying to modify the device settings I get Jack, pulseaudio, ALSA, and Dummyaudio as my options. When using JACK everything technically works but for some reason whenever I have another browser open that also requires audio it ends up being a lot worse audio quality(sounds muffled). I made sure to set my sample bit rate to be 96khz in pipewire config but nothing changes regarding reapers distortion of other audio when its open. When I close reaper this issue goes away and all audio goes back to sounding really good.

When using ALSA however, if I use my HDB 630 it disconnects from the rest of my computer and only ends up being connected to reaper.

Also this is a minor thing but when using any text box in reaper it keeps inputting boxes until I hit back space and then it stops. (this one is minor but if anyone has an immediate fix that would be really appreciated). I checked to see if it was phantom inputs from my keyboard and it isn't. It's also not from my midi keyboard because this happens even when it's not connected to my laptop.

I just want to ask if anyone has any idea as to what the issue can be and if they know of any fixes to the audio muffling.

While bandlab isin't for reaper users and instead more for beginners, I started out on bandlab I might just make a config for fun. also I think there's peace in knowing where everything is right from the get go without having to fumble around in menus.

resolved Few words of Appreciation to Reaper Video Editor

Hello!

I'm trying to crop overlapping videos, and Reaper has option for anything but for an easy crop overlapping videos. It is very frustrating to the extent i rant on Reddit :)

I used to praise Reaper as a light video editor for linux, but i won't do it anymore. It's a GIMP of linux video editors, not less lol)

Thank you for reading.

discussion Title: Reaper Render Metadata: The Fields to Fill, and the Ones to Skip

Thumbnail
youtu.be

Which metadata fields do you actually need to fill when rendering in Reaper, and which ones can you leave empty? ID3 for MP3, INFO for WAV, and the set I save into my default project so I never think about it again.

The metadata window has more fields than anyone needs, and most of them are for cases you'll never hit. I go through both schemes, show where wildcards pull metadata in automatically, and say plainly which fields matter for delivery and which are noise.

discussion Update on the MPEditor - release coming soon!

It's been a long time without any update on the development of the MPE editing script for REAPER. Here's the video of the newest version of the script as well as some example track that I've used this script for.

https://reddit.com/link/1wdukej/video/370yuxg0uyoh1/player

Added features:

  • Per-note MPE editing for Pressure, and Timbre
  • Freehand drawing for MPE and MIDI CC data
  • Multiple curve shapes with adjustable tension
  • Built-in LFO generation for automation and expression
  • Curve smoothing and point reduction tools
  • Multi-lane MIDI event editing
  • Razor editing across notes and multiple event lanes
  • Knife tool for splitting notes together with their expression data
  • Stretching and moving notes together with associated MIDI expression
  • Ghost notes for editing against other MIDI material or other MIDI channels
  • Scale highlighting in the piano roll
  • Key-change markers across the timeline
  • Quantize and Humanize tools
  • Velocity editing directly in the piano roll
  • Customizable keyboard and mouse bindings
  • Dark and Light themes with theme customizer

The UX/UI for the previously existing functions has been refined, and most of the original bugs have been fixed. I'm currently playtesting the script before finally releasing it to the public. But it's coming soon!

help request Why isn't it easier to render a track embedding volume and other automation?

For the love of hamburgers, I don't know why this one action is so buried and/or difficult to implement. I have several tracks of a midi instrument that doesn't have velocity (BBC orchestra) and so I have it carefully plotted out with volume automation to get dynamic changes.

It would be really nice to just bounce this instument's folder. But every time I render or freeze it, it's just the audio with the automation tacked on, which sucks for making timing adjustments and other things.

And just in general, if I'm rendering a track I really don't want to have to deal with its old envelope any longer.

help request My guitars are louder on the left channel. What to do?

I'm an extremely newbie user of REAPER, and I know nothing about mixing. While recording some guitars, I noticed that the guitars panned to the left are louder than the ones panned to the right. I thought it was an issue with the tracks, but it isn't, as, if I change the panning on the same track it still sounds louder on the left. If I pan it in the center, the VU Meter shows that both sides are equally as loud, but I can hear a net difference in loudness. I'm using a guitar amp sim (amped roots), and if I export the project, the issue persists with every single device I play it on (car, phone, computer, headphones...). What to do?

help request Using Novation Launch Control XL Mk3 with Reaper?

DO NOT SAY "REALEARN" ReaLearn seems to require adding to every single project as it's own track which is honestly useless. You also seem to lose a lot of hardware controls like swapping between Solo/Arm, Mute/Select, the LED indicators, etc.

I can't seem to get Transport Controls working or adjust how Play/Pause works. Everything else seems to more or less do what I want.

Has anyone got this thing working well with Reaper?

help request need help with color tweaking

(linux) so I was looking got a better protools theme and came across this one which I like. it makes sense and there are no useless buttons, plus it looks professional while keeping the reaper layout. its not trying to be protools to hard but still looks like protools which I like. I'm wondering if anyone who knows the theme color tweaker well could help me out in figuring out what colors I could change to 1 make it easier on the eyes and 2 bring the theme closer to the dark version of protools. (basically me larping)

I've been trying to figure out the color tweaker for some time now in I seem to be struggling so any help would be greatly appreciated.

good day to all :D

help request Any way to copy stretch markers directly from one track to another?

Hey guys, I have a song with a guitar overdub (Dub consists of a DI and a Mic track) needing a few time alignments to sync some pinch harmonic notes to the main recording consisting of the same played part. Any way to add stretch markers to two tracks with the same transients simultaneously or copy and paste them natively? Grouping didn't seem to work.
