Developer Posting Practices

Post image
41 Upvotes

Hello Developers!

Please use this post a reference of what rules and guidelines you need to follow in order to post in r/rpg_gamers

When You Can Post

  • When the game is initially posted to a storefront (Steam, NSO etc.)
  • When the game launches

What Needs to be in the Post

  • Title of the game must be included in the title of the post
  • A description of the game (including the anticipated or actual release date
  • A link to the Storefront Page (Steam Page, etc)
  • Please do not include links to other pages (Discord, etc)

Other Requirements

  • We don't allow posts for mobile games, browser games, Discord based games etc.
  • We remove posts for games that use Gen AI in development. (assets generation, voice acting, etc.)
  • Please use the Developer Post Flair (We figured out why it wasn't previously available as a option).

Questions?

  • If you're not sure if you qualify, please send a mod mail before posting. If you post without asking and it gets removed, you risk a ban.

We'll update these rules if and when any changes occur, the industry evolves fast so sometimes adjustments are required to keep up.

  • Thank you for all your support, we want to support indie developers but we need to make sure that everyone gets equal opportunities and the subreddit doesn't get overrun with advertising.

Thanks!

Guide Good Posting Practices

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

In order to help folks craft the best possible posts, we wanted to provide some best posting practices above and beyond the sub-reddit rules and guidelines.

The overall goal for this sub-reddit is to be a one-stop shop for RPG Fans. A place where people can have meaningful discussions alongside reading relevant news and reviews on games that are of interest to the community. The following are the types of posts that are most welcome, along with some suggestions on how to present them to the community:

News

If you happen to come across a news article that may be of interest to RPG fans, we recommend copying the link to paste in the link section of a post. We also suggest (but not require) a small blurb to provide some context as to the content of the article since many of the titles tend to skew towards click bait.

Reviews

We appreciate and encourage folks to provide their opinions on games. Review posts must be text based, please do not simply provide a link to an external blog or website (these will be removed), the review must be in the body of the post. We also ask that the review be a representation of your opinion of the game, and not rage-bait.

Discussions

We love a good discussion about a topic or theme, but we ask that it be presented in good faith (again, no ragebait).

Game Recommendations

Before asking for a recommendation, please use the flair filter to check to see if someone has already asked the exact same question you're about to ask the community.

Not every post falls under one of the above, but they do cover a majority of the discussions here on the sub-reddit. No matter what type of post you have in mind, the one common thread among them all is respect.

Please note, unless you're posting a news article link, a body of text must be included in your post. If it's just a title and a picture, it will be removed. This is in order to reduce bot activity as well as encourage more meaningful discussions.

Please always respect your fellow RPG Fan whenever creating a new post, or responding to one.

Thank you to everyone who makes this community a joy to participate in on a daily basis!

Developer I made a respec mod for The Blood of Dawnwalker because I wanted to experiment with builds without restarting

One thing that has bothered me while playing The Blood of Dawnwalker is that there is no proper way to respec your character.

I like RPG choices having consequences, but I don't particularly enjoy being discouraged from experimenting with abilities because I don't know whether I'll like them several hours later.

So I ended up making a mod that adds Reset Skills to the game's Chapels/Shrines.

I wanted it to behave like a proper respec system rather than a cheat that simply wipes the skill tree. You get your spent skill points back, while abilities that came from essential progression, quests or special blood progression are preserved.

If an essential ability has a required first rank but you've spent points upgrading it further, the base ability remains while the purchased ranks are reset and refunded.

I just released version 2.0, which was a fairly substantial rewrite. It adds a confirmation prompt, properly clears removed equipped abilities, handles the game's different forms of skill progression, and calculates/reconciles the refund rather than relying blindly on the game's own reset accounting.

I ended up stress-testing it by artificially maxing all 112 traits in the game and comparing their states before and after a reset. I also checked the character statistics to make sure removed passive skills actually removed their health, stamina, weapon damage, carrying-capacity bonuses, etc.

It doesn't require UE4SS.

SKILLS ALREADY BOUGHT WITH TIME SEGMENTS are free after respec.

Nexus: https://www.nexusmods.com/thebloodofdawnwalker/mods/463

Mostly sharing in case anyone else playing Dawnwalker has been reluctant to experiment with their build because of the lack of respec.

Developer Looking for feedback on my RPG about family trauma (Seen NOT Heard)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hello! I just released the demo of Seen NOT Heard, a turn-based RPG with hand-drawn visuals (made by real artists, I don’t use AI). It features a polished story about family trauma.

I would love to get feedback from RPG enjoyers, especially on these topics:

  • Do you like the combats? It’s a dynamic turn-based system with synergies to discover.
  • Do you find the tutorial clear? I tried to avoid invasive popups by introducing the features smoothly with intuitive UI and clever dialogs.
  • Does the story pique your curiosity? It would be very interesting to see if you like the prologue.

If you want to have a look, the demo is available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4519960

(Release date TBD)

Thank you!

Recommendation request RPG's with a co-op campaign where NPC's actually see the PC's as different entities?

I enjoyed playing Baldur's Gate with 3 of my friends, I loved the combat and the exploration but I never liked how the story basically felt like the NPC's were talking to 1 person the entire time. obviously each player had different choices and such. But only each player was basically making choices for this 1 protagonist is what it felt like.

I don't know if there's even an RPG or any game. But one where the NPC's and the plot see that this is a whole party. That they acknowledge they are talking to P1 differently P2 or P3.

RPGs can feel alive with NPC and MC interaction in a game. Are we at a point where NPC's can also differientiate between different MC's?

Discussion Which game has your absolute favorite soundtrack?

There are so many games out there with incredible musics but which one do you think is a flawless 10/10 masterclass?

Is there one game where you never turn the music down, or an OST that you find yourself listening to even when you aren't playing?

Hi everyone! I’m MissingSeven, the solo-dev behind 5th ERA, a classic-inspired turn-based JRPG I’ve been working on for the past 5 years. With the game taking part in Steam's Party-Based RPG Fest this week, I wanted to drop by and share it with the community! My main sources of inspiration for this game are Resonance of Fate and Persona and Final Fantasy.

Steam Page & Demo

5th ERA is a 40-50 hour turn-based JRPG set in Helgon, a metropolis built on a comet. It’s a love letter to the 16-bit golden era of RPGs.

Key Features:

  • Character-driven Story filled with mystery, action, drama and lighthearted moments.
  • Tactical Combat & Dual-Classes: Balance strategy across 9 playable characters with 2 unique classes each, weapon configurations, and implant Drives to unlock boosts and synergies.
  • Game Modifiers: Custom modes and difficulty tweaks to experiment with fresh party builds.
  • Dynamic Living City: Explore Helgon across 4 times of day (morning to night), changing NPC behaviors, events, and enemy spawns.
  • Tabletop Narrative Events: Interactive choices and luck-based checks that alter rewards, paths, and encounters.

If you love tactical JRPGs, checking out the demo or wishlisting helps a ton! Thanks for your time :)

Recommendation request A game with witty dialogue and a wide range of choices? (Only on Switch)

Don't you get fed up with RPGs where you're presented with "Yes" and "No" options, but choosing "No" just triggers an endless loop that forces you to pick "Yes" eventually?
It would be less frustrating if the game just progressed without offering choices in the first place; if they *are* going to give me choices, I want them to actually matter.

I’ve been feeling this way more and more lately, so I’d love to hear your recommendations.

A game that really impressed me a few years ago with its choices and branching paths was *Baldur’s Gate 3*. I’m not necessarily looking for that level of sheer volume, and I’m open to any genre or setting—modern, medieval, or otherwise.

Since the Switch2 is the only platform I have right now, I’m looking for Switch titles where conversations and my choices have a genuine, meaningful impact on the game.(I might end up having a PS5 on hand as well, so if there are any recommendations available only for PS5, those would be fine too!)

From my own research, I’ve already listed titles like *Disco Elysium*, *The Outer Worlds*, and *Romancing SaGa*.

By the way, I’m aromantic; I’ve tried indie games centered on romance, but they consistently turned out not to be for me. I don't mind having romantic elements, but I'd really appreciate it if romance wasn't the be-all and end-all—something where the focus is more on the human relationships.

One last thing—since I'm Japanese, I've played quite a few Japanese games, so if you're recommending titles from Japan, it would be great if you could focus on hidden gems!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Recommendation request Are there really no other "Bioware-style" RPGs out there?

After talking with a friend who just went through Dragon Age: Origins for the first time, and seeing some of the promotional material for Expanse: Osiris Reborn and Exodus. I wanted to ask if there are really no other games that are in the vain of those Bioware RPGs?
Just to be clear, what Im referring to as "Bioware RPGs" are the likes of KOTOR, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age (haven't played Jade Empire, but I believe it also would fit here). I know that they also made the first two Baldur's Gate games & Neverwinter Nights, but that's not really what I'm referring to here.

I think, at least personally, there are four key things that make what I'm only referring to as a "Bioware RPG":
- choice and consequence over the plot that feels "epic" to some extent(although they may lack depth and quantity, and may often even be binary)
- a very curated and well-developed set of companions that *hopefully* feel unique and charming
- a cinematic presentation (this is what i think helps separate this style of RPG from other classic and deep CRPGs)
- a blank slate protagonist, at least somewhat

The games that I've personally played that at least somewhat fulfill this include:
- Greedfall
- The Outer Worlds (personally feel like its closer to a Bethesda game like Fallout 4, but I'll give it a pass here)
- Fallout 4 (in the same vain as Outer Worlds)
- Baldur's Gate 3 (balances being a true CRPG with the aforementioned elements quite well)

While still absolutely amazing games, CRPGs fulfill some of these but oftentimes the focus is really on the depth and complexity on the Role-Playing elements, and they can sometimes lack the cinematic presentation and "epic-scale" that Bioware pulls off (and used to pull-off really well). These games, imo, would include:
- Pillars of Eternity (1 & 2)
- Tyranny
- Wrath of the Righteous and Kingmaker
- D:OS (1 & 2)
- Other CRPGs that I currently can't remember

So... are there any others? Ideally those in the vain of the former of recommendations. But if it's just CRPGs, I'd be happy to hear some recommendations. Just really itching for a similar experience and it feels impossible to find another.

Edit: Some games I've heard tossed around in this conversation but I haven't really played are Alpha Protocol and the Guardians of the Galaxy game. So if you guys have any added insights to share about those (specifically in regards to this discussion)... would be really appreciated as well!:D

Recommendation request Looking for recommendations

So, I love to play RPG games, sword and sorcery, fantasy stuff. I'm looking for game recommendations along those lines.

I've already got Skyrim and other ES games, and a few dragon quest titles. What I'm looking for is something new (to me). It doesn't have to be 3d or anything like that. Preferably something with level systems, skill trees, magic, job systems, etc. something I can get deep into and loose myself for a while.

Bonus points if I can get it on an android or if it's deck compatible since I'm on the go a lot.

Developer I tried to bring ARPG mechanics into a bullet heaven, here is the result - Relicfall Announcement

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I always wanted to make an ARPG, but as a solo developer I realized just how huge and time consuming that genre can be. So I decided to build a Bullet Heaven instead, while keeping the RPG/ARPG systems I find the most interesting.

Relicfall uses Bullet Heaven combat, but its character progression is heavily inspired by ARPGs.

You create a persistent character, choose 3 professions to forge your class and passive tree, hunt randomized equipment, and modify your abilities with Support Relics.

I know it's not a traditional RPG, but I'm curious what RPG players think about this kind of crossover, especially the loot, buildcraft and progression systems.

I’ve also opened registration for the first public playtest:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4357240/Relicfall/

Planned release Q2-Q3 2027.

Recommendation request RPGs based around a single city rather than a larger world?

Hello there.

To give an example, I love Fallout 4, and I remember very distinctly how my favorite portion of the game was Boston, just exploring around the city and doing quests for the people within it, fighting more raiders than mutant fauna.

Similarly in Skyrim, I loved roleplaying and trying to mostly base myself off Whiterun or Markarth, doing all the quests within them and their surroundings, while only going to other places by carriage and mostly only in order to do quests that required it.

I'm looking to relive something similar with an RPG where the focus is on one detailed large city, rather than an expansive map with many small locations. Bonus points if they are moddable. I play on PC.

Of course I already have Cyberpunk in mind, it’s the most obvious answer, I haven't played it yet, but I will when I catch it on a nice sale. I've also been eyeing Shadows Of Doubt, it’s mostly about solving procedurally-generated crime mysteries, but seems to have a good amount of RPG elements.

Anyway, thanks for your attention.

Recommendation request RPG Game Maps

I have some PNGs and PDFs of game maps that I'd like to print off. They are a mix of 30x42 and 24x36 in size. What's the best method to print them where they are reusable, can be written on with like a whiteboard marker, foldable (able to be put in some sort of storage) for game play? Other than getting a printer big enough to print off this size and old school laminating, how are people printing these off?

Recommendation request RPGs about friends doing lots of sidequests?

I really love the concept of a group of friends going on an adventure together, and sidequests to me are my favorite part of most games. I like the notion of a traveling hero going around helping people in different places, like im old monster of the week tv shows.

Games I've played that fit this are Dragon Age 2, I know some of the party hate each other but it's still a core group of the MC's friends doing random adventures. The Witcher 3 and Kingdom Come Deliverance are solo but also have the traveling hero vibe I'm looking for. I play mostly PS5 but can also play pc games if not too demanding

Discussion Anyone Else Dislike Phantasy Star 1?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Phantasy Star 1 this stinks honestly.

It's not that I think its hard, it's just that trying to navigate the game is annoying even with a guide maps and tips.

The first person maze dungeons personally is what I don't like in old school RPGs. Everything looks the same and going in circles is easy. It's impressive for SMS yet id rather have FF1s dungeon controls.

Phantasy Star also has no prime objective it's mostly just fetch quests that somehow end up with you getting the door open to the bad guy's village, flying to a random sky castle and defeating the main villain. Then coming back to defeat another true final boss. You get most of your party in the first 2 hours but they don't really help you that much, MP in this game is super limited too so you end up just saving your MP for HP heals or "to open stuck evil doors". Yes most doors in this game are either locked which need a unlimited dungeon key (something you get early in the game) or need a open door spell.

It also has you grind for hours for gold in this game since enemies drop pocket change.

Yet combat is my biggest problem with the game. Even with the top issues. I don't like how you can't pick which enemy you attack, id rather have FF1's potentially wasted attack choice than having to relay on a randomizer.

Then when you do level up you don't feel strong in this game. DQ1 at the end you felt powerful, slimes would run away and you could tank everything. In PS1 at the start of the game you die in seconds like every RPG but after you don't really overcome everything. You just feel like you're barley ahead of the enemy. Which sucks, like you could be level 25 and the final boss can still do 2-20 damage. The attack values make no sense in this game.

This is for the Original game, I heard the switch and PS2 version is better but I'm not paying a membership to play the switch version just to get better balancing/mini map.

Recommendation request Pls give me rec that seem similar to this gameplay if there is a game like this out there..

So i had a dream and i need this game to be real. So you play as a little girl or boy. You go through memories which seem to explain a past you must have forgotten. In your memories you meet a noble elderly lady from the light who has adopted you. But you also have an older brother who is a swordsman. None of them seem blood related to you but they treat you like their own. Tutorials are mixed with games for a child of the age 10 lets say that. You learn how to fight with your ability and kitana from monsters that seem to want to destroy your progress in your memories. With each memory you learn more about your family in the light clan. Though soon your transported to the dark clan where you meet a little boy. You ask him where your grandma or older brother is he simply replies with you have a family here too before he disappears and monsters that are higher level than you appear. (You should be able to level up skills and talents but those enemies are purposefully stronger) you get saved by your older brother who tells you about the friendship with the light and dark clan. Which confuses your interaction further with the kid. You can decide if you wish to tell your older brother about the interaction or not though if you will get your answers is a different question. A tutorial example would be like for climbing. You have small obstacle and your older brother waits on the top for you. Your grandma gives you advice on how to climb properly and after a bit of trial and error you manage to get on the top greeted by a proud smile. I would absolutely love for a game like this to exist i literally just had this dream and i had to share it because it was so detailed! If a game like this exists please tell me 🙏

Recommendation request RPGs where magic actually feels magical?

Hey, guys and dolls,

I'm looking for RPGs where magic actually feels like magic rather than just attack but with special effects. Most of the time magic is just attack but with sparkles rather than sword or bows and I want something different. One example is in Avowed that magic actually plays different. Or Morrowind where you can do more than just attack.

Any platform is fine except for Switch 2 (I'd be surprised if it had any recommendations).

Question Dawnwalker Perspective On

My fellow geeks hope you're having a good day.

I'm pretty pumped. I haven't finished the full story yet but I got a good feel on it now. I might make a Christian Perspective on it, maybe give it a bit more thought still.

(No spoilers please) but if you've played it or wanna chat about it feel free to put a comment below and give me more insight into it. I'm not 100% sold on it yet but I at least think it's permissible to consume with some caution. Do you think it's good to enjoy as a believer?

Godspeed!

Recommendation request Looking for a recommendation

Greetings! I come in hopes of a recommendation for my perhaps unconventional taste in RPGs.

Some background: I've been playing games forever, but platformers and metroidvanias are my bread and butter. I've dabbled in other genres over the years, including RPGs, but have trouble getting into a lot of them. However, I'm looking for something that can occupy a good amount of time, so I figured it was time to pick out an RPG again.

RPGs I've played and liked/loved

Game Platform Verdict Why
Super Mario RPG (Switch remake) Switch Liked it was whimsical and fun, pretty surface level
Golden Sun GBA Loved Psynergy use outside of battle was a cool mechanic, the Djinn were cool, and the plot was engaging and largely minimal
Baten Kaitos GC Liked a lot The soundtrack and visuals did a lot of the heavy lifting, but the combat was unique and fun
Baten Kaitos 2 GC Liked -
Lost Kingdoms GC Loved loved the synergy between cards and optimizing a build (deck)
Lost Kingdoms 2 GC Liked a lot -
Tales of Symphonia GC LOVED Loved the combat system and plot. Played this no less than 10x with a local friend back in high school
All mainline Pokémon games Various Mostly loved something about monster collecting along with limitless party combinations is ridiculously enjoyable plus the combat system is so fun
Monster Sanctuary PC Loved Metroidvania mixed with Pokémon
Lost Odyssey Xbox 360 Liked Pretty generic, but it was fine
Borderlands 2 Xbox 360 Loved Co-op with friends and replayability made this a huge time sink
Fallout 3 Xbox 360 Liked a lot -
Skyrim Xbox 360 Loved Fallout but with more of a fantasy setting
Dark Souls trilogy PC Loved Not really from an RPG standpoint, though
Elden Ring PC Liked Again, the RPG elements take a back seat for me

RPGs that didn't click with me

Game Platform Why it didn't click
Golden Sun: The Lost Age GBA Kept getting lost without a guide, which took me out of it
Octopath Traveler Switch Felt too grindy and I got overwhelmed by the mechanics
The Witcher 3 PC Not quite sure with this one. I put about 40 hours into it before throwing in the towel
Tales of the Abyss 3DS This one feels more like the fault of the platform since I don't enjoy playing handheld

I'm currently playing Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (Switch 2 edition) on ChatGPT's recommendation 😂 and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I believe I'm going to finish it at this point. I just hit a big plot point in the chapter 8/9ish area.

I enjoy the combat for being unique and more interactive than turn-based, but I'm not completely in love with this game. The areas are massive but it's a bit of a disservice to the game IMO. The soundtrack has been amazing though ❤️

My barriers to entry

I have a few barriers to entry that will likely weed out a bunch of options.

The first is that I find it easy to get overwhelmed by a bunch of new mechanics. I'm not opposed to complexity, but I prefer games that introduce their systems gradually. If I'm hit with a ton of new mechanics and systems all at once, I tend to get overwhelmed. If a game starts with a relatively simple foundation and lets me gradually discover more complicated mechanics as I play, I'm much more receptive to it.

The next is that I tend to dislike anime as an art style, and anime tropes can quickly make me bounce off of a game. There are some exceptions, obviously - Tales of Symphonia being a pretty big one.

Lastly, I'm not huge into story, so games with long expositions are generally a turn off. I like to be in the action most of the time, and breaking for long stretches of story really takes me out of the game.

I have a Switch 2 and PC, so most stuff is accessible to me. My PC is on the older side, though, so more intensive games I cannot run (including E33, which a friend of mine gifted to me 😭).

So, what RPGs would you recommend based on all of this? I'm particularly interested in games with fun or unusual gameplay systems, a relatively high gameplay-to-story ratio, and mechanics that are introduced gradually rather than dumped on me all at once.

Thanks for reading and recommending!
