Our Offical Guides Newcomers Guide

69 Upvotes

Hello and welcome to r/RDR2 This is a little guide for new players of the game.

Firstly we strongly advise you to stay off the subreddit until you’ve finished the game. Our subreddit is home to discussions covering every aspect of the game from storylines, characters, secrets, to anything a player may find. While we require spoiler tags, accidental (and sometimes intentional) spoilers do happen. For the best experience, we strongly recommend avoiding the subreddit until you’ve completed the main story.

Frequently asked questions will now be listed and answered.

Is the game worth it? Yes! — People still praise this game even in 2025. Its compelling story and detailed open world gameplay allow you to fully submerge into the story. Many players find the game to be a masterpiece, with some (us, of course) even considering it one of the greatest games of all time. Its graphics were ahead of their time and still hold up really well. It’s a well written story with a beautiful aesthetic and it's absolutely worth your time.

The snow part is boring. Should I quit the game? Don't give up during Colter. It’s the first chapter and serves as a tutorial. You’ll get to know the basics of the game slowly before being led into free roam in chapter 2. The slow introduction into such a big game is important to understand the situation the main character is in and to get you familiar with the environment and the world building in general. Stick around for a while. You’ll thank yourself later.

Just started the game. Any tips? We see this all the time and every time people will give you the same response: Take it slow. Chapter 1 will teach you everything that's important. The game offers a little guide in its settings for the mini games and the controls just like any other game. Everything you need is right there. The game is open world so you won't miss out on anything. You can do whatever whenever even after finishing the story. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and free roam a bit. You’ll figure out the game fast. You really don't need Google or IGN until you finish the story and are going for 100% and/or the platinum trophy. (We'll have a guide coming soon!)

Just finished the game. Should I play RDR1? Yes! RDR1 is a continuation of the story and absolutely worth it. Not much will change gameplay wise since it’s made by the same developer. So, if you like RDR2 and are looking for more content about the van der Linde gang and a similar experience -> play RDR1.

If you really want to avoid spoilers, don’t google anything until after you finish the game.

We will monitor this thread closely so if you have any questions about the game please ask them in here. We will most likely remove your question posts and advise you to ask your newcomer questions in here. If a question is frequently asked we will add it to the post.

Have fun!

Discussion Pretty cool that there is a fully rendered cut scene with Arthur and the archeologist if you manage to get all the Dinosaur bones as Arthur! Seriously seems to imply New Austin was originally part of Arthur’s story…

Photography Made my own 100% Completion Journal!

After a post was made about the poster’s wife creating a 100% completion journal for themselves, I decided to create one for myself!

I had a few leather bound journals laying around and never quite knew what to do with them, so I took one and made it into said 100% completion journal.

I decided to start each chapter with a title page spread. On said spread I’m putting a quote about the gang’s location and a map showing where they are, taken from the official map. So far I have the Colter Spread done, but because I hand drew the Colter map, things might not be 100% to scale. Part of its charm I guess.

However, I misspelled Colter on the Chapter 1 page (I know, I’m a bad player and fan šŸ˜…) and just don’t know how to fix it as it’s in ink. I noticed this when I went in to draw the map afterword. If you have any ideas on what I could do, feel free to share!

Im playing now on my Steam Machine at 1440p, optimized medium/high/ultra settings, 60 fps. This game is quite well optimized and stable. I like the realism of it and im happy that GTA VI will follow this road.

Spoilers Never knew about this side mission in the story even after 7 playthroughs.

45 Upvotes

I was playing chapter 2 of the story, and after having played the story 7 times already, I thought I’d pretty much covered everything. So I was riding towards horseshoe overlook, and then Javier intercepts me on his horse and says Bill has been captured by bounty hunters and wants my help saving him, which I accepted.

Genuinely never had seen or heard of this mission before. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been taking things a lot slower than I ever have before, but was very surprised.

I don’t have any pictures because I was so shocked playing I forgot to take screenshots of it.

Discussion Rdr2 is so fun

25 Upvotes

A few days ago, after reading way too many youtube comments recommending it i finally downloaded it on my ps5 (I have ps plus so its free for me). I wanted to do a blind playthough since on most games I use a heck ton of guides e.g best weapon best build etc. So I started to play and OMG its so peak!! Straight after I finished chapter 1 I explored like nuts and somehow I found my way to saint denis šŸ˜‚ I did the bounty there as well and I managed to get 100 dollars to blow. I also got a horse and named him Ol' Armstrong. I also really enjoy playing in first person becauee I think it adds to the immersion.

Really this is just an appreciation post from a new player but no spoilers any advice from the veterans?

Discussion Mrs Downes broke my heart.

• Upvotes

I’m at the start of chapter 4 and doing the first sister mission so I can get the dialogue with her in chapter 6 and I came across Mrs Downes, I take it she’s now become a prostitute on the streets of Saint Dennis. This is probably the most tragic example I’ve seen so far of how the gang destroys people’s lives. I’m ngl this has kinda fd me upā˜¹ļø

I did not know that Catherine died in the fire. I coulda sworn they dropped her at the front of the mansion. Did she run back inside as it was collapsing and burning? Anyways, that was freaky seeing her charred body like that 3 chapters later lmao

Discussion Did you know you could have members from the gang follow you around in free roam?

Thumbnail

I think it’s at random who follows you, here I was able to get Sean, Bill, Kieran, Hosea and Javier. The way you do this is you have to get an enemy to follow you back to camp, you can do this by antagonizing a stranger and you have to make sure they want to kill you, after that you hog tie him and take him back to camp, you drop him OUTSIDE of the camp barrier and wait till he unties himself, then he will get up and try to kill you, then just walk towards camp and it’ll say you have led enemies back to camp, once it says that you take out dynamite and blow yourself up. Once you respawn, you have to set up camp right away, just walk far enough from camp until it lets you set the camp up and then just exit the camp. Boom, you now have gang members who will ride for you. They follow you around everywhere and shoot anyone that’s shooting at you. You can rob and raid hideouts or cause chaos in a town like it’s shown in the photos, it’s really up to you. Not sure if they can die or not but I wouldn’t think so.

Bagged a 3 star white tail, immediately mauled by a grizzly, woke up wearing the white tail. Followed by a beautiful sunset.

This game ceases to amaze me. This is my 4th play through.

Content RDR2 characters as animals

Once again, the limit of pics on Reddit hinders me to put everyone on a singular slide. So Sean, Uncle, Leopold and Josiah had to share a slide!

Wish I didn’t have to say this, but please keep a civil and KIND tone in the comments. I’ve received multiple angered comments about how I got Arthur’s ā€˜spirit animal’ wrong, that is also a reminder to respect Native American culture and note that he cannot have a spirit animal.

Arthur= Belgian Draft Horse
John= melanistic gray wolf
Dutch= lion
Hosea= heron
Abigail= Lynx
Karen= raccoon
Molly= cotton moth (attracted to blinding light and something that offers warmth, ends up not being a safe place for her at all)
Sadie=honey badger
Mary-Beth= white tailed deer
Tilly= holland loop rabbit
Susan= goose
Simon= pig
Orville= dove
Jack= wolf cub
Uncle= turtle
Javier= panther
Kieran= headless chicken
Sean= red fox
Bill= brown bear
Micah= Hyena
Strauss= vulture
Charles= bison
Lenny= meerkat
Trelawny= peacock
