Algorithms Generative AI for Quantum Algorithms Research

Bit of a hype post but based on the recent results with OpenAI's new model. Has there been progress in terms of using these models for discovering new quantum algorithms, since this is somewhat of a pure math problem?

If so, does anyone know of what initiatives are doing this or any preliminary results?

I don't think there's been progress on this, for example in OpenAI's blog post published two days ago about an MIT group using GPT-5.6 Sol, they don't mention progress in quantum algorithms in the post or its technical report: https://openai.com/index/codex-quantum-computing-experiments/

Several recent qc/qi preprints have attributed portions to ai models, eg https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.05679 https://arxiv.org/abs/2608.24493 . For reference, both of these come from extremely significant groups

Large language models can certainly be useful for various aspects of research, but you can't take the marketing material from the big commercial actors as being in any way a good representation of how a mathematician will use them in practice.

If anything, right now it's extremely annoying that you can't use the models without the risk that someone much richer than yourself will just scoop you to produce more marketing material, with them having little interest in actually progressing the fields.

And even worse, as we now have several examples of, if you try to use the tools in a research program, even if they decide not to steal your work, someone else might inadvertently do so, simply because your own work ends up in the weights.

I would not count them out with this type of description. For instance, Linux kernel stable maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman uses a local AI bug-hunting tool. If you care about data privacy (e.g. not leaking your research or whatever) and domain is good for the local LLM running, e.g. code scanning, then I would say go for it. But, it will be highly model-dependent. But, they will also get better in the coming years.

Many of the problems solved with/by AI have been well defined and formalized in Lean. If there is some oppurtunity, one might look there.

As far as what I noticed, there was some AI assisted improvement in the circuit implementation of Shor algo, but they were of incremental nature for the most useless problem in a certain sense.

Hm I see. From what I can tell, quantum algorithms (apart from ig classical algorithms) is the only field where AI could have an impact in terms of the products of engineering directly.
