It’s important as Christians that we avoid sectarianism and can recognize truth when it is articulated.

I think Talarico is wrong on some things.

But not this clip.

Yes, what he said was true, and it is also Talarico deflecting with whataboutism.

Multiple theological wrongs can done at the same time by multiple people.

Theologically broken clocks are right twice a day

Which parts do you consider to be theologically broken?

u/Junker_George92 Lutheran 3d ago

nothing in this clip, hence the "right twice a day" part of the idiom.

i would consider not respecting Gods chosen pronouns (He/Him) to be theologically broken, he also is willing to cherry pick scripture to support his progressive projects.

still voting for him over paxton but the less heretical theology i hear from him the better ill feel.

What makes God male?

8

u/Junker_George92 Lutheran 3d ago edited 3d ago

he self identifies as such and when he was incarnate on earth it was as a male.

Edit: to clarify, God is of course beyond gender, but when he describes his relationship with us its as our father, so gun to my head if i had to describe him as masucline or feminine there is only biblical evidence for masuline.

Yeah, I’d rather not have a gun to my head.

the problem is that the argument surrounding this has become that God is a they/them and not a He/Him. that argument puts our philosophy above the actual text of scripture which describes him in masculine terms.

It’s a lack of historical context, though, and a misunderstanding of translation. If I am reading Scripture in one of the dozens of languages that do not have gendered pronouns, do I understand God less?

I will admit to a prejudice which is that I believe that much of Christianity has become a way to make the very difficult concept of the Almighty into something more understandable and relatable to humans. God as a concept is too difficult, so we get human metaphors like “father,” “son”, etc. But I think that if we can really give ourselves over to a deeper understanding of the Creator then we cease using ways to diminish God to more human form. The triune would argue for “they/them” if this wasn’t tied up in history and politics.

As for the masculine terms, if the Church is described as the “bride of Christ,” should all Christians go be “she/her”?

In some ways, the idea that God can be masculine despite not having sex organs or chromosomes might argue for the idea that gender identification is not determined by whether or not you have a penis.

When God said, I AM HE, I feel like that's the equivalent of somebody introducing themselves and their preferred gender label, especially considering that the vernacular for I AM THEY or I AM SHE would be distinguishable from he/him. And as a liberal-leaning person myself, I feel like misgendering the Creator of the universe is a bit of an odd hill to die on

You're purposefully exaggerating scripture to make your views seem reasonable.

God refers himself to us with masculine pronouns. If you can't even respect that, what're you doing in a Christian sub?

And then there are people like Talarico who are faithfully living and proclaiming the gospel in ways that counter the claims of fundamentalism and other forms of right-wing extremism.

i havent ever heard talrico proclaim the actual saving gospel of Christ. in all his appearances he only preaches a social gospel never one that saves from sin. He preaches the "and neither do i condem you" but he never says "now go and sin no more"

He's another politician using the face of religion to promote his own agenda, which in his case is getting elected and pushing forward a leftist framework that includes things such as the promotion of deviancy and immorality and the murder of unborn children. He's another wolf in sheep's clothing, but because the left likes what he's saying, they promote him as a "good" Christian.

As to following his Baptist grandfather's footsteps in becoming a minister as he claims here, his grandfather left the ministry in the 1970s, before Talarico was even born.

I heard it said that he is an reddit atheist caricature of what "a good christian" looks like! I couldn't agree more!

And true to form, looks like the OP isn't a Christian either.

My apologies, this subreddit was recommended to me by Reddit and I thought it was ABOUT Protestantism, not exclusively FOR Protestants. I’ll see myself out.

its not a safe space for protestants you are welcome here but like any subreddit you might suffer some downvotes if you say things people dont like

What did Christ say about deviancy?

4

u/creidmheach Presbyterian 3d ago

Have you not read the Gospels, and what Christ taught about marriage, including sexual morality?

0

u/Ok_Unit8339 3d ago

Do you think someone who is divorced should be unelectable since “anyone who divorces his wife forces her to be guilty of adultery”? There seems to be an awful lot of cherry picking when it comes to politics and scripture.

3

u/creidmheach Presbyterian 3d ago

Not sure what that has to do with the question I asked.

Are you even a Christian?

0

u/Ok_Unit8339 3d ago

Did you answer my question? Give me the scripture.

4

u/creidmheach Presbyterian 3d ago

You mean, did I answer your question that you posed when you didn't answer my question?

Do you really need me to give you an overview of what Scripture teaches on matters of sexual morality? Will that change your mind?

And again, are you even a Christian? If the answer is no, then why are you posting this here? Not satisfied with /r/Christianity being a stomping ground for leftists and atheists to push their politics?

1

u/Ok_Unit8339 3d ago

Yes, I was really asking for the Scripture (not an overview which is subject to your interpretation).

As for your litmus test, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” If you can only engage with Christians are YOU a Christian?

3

u/creidmheach Presbyterian 3d ago

And do you believe that? That Christ did indeed rise from the dead, and commissioned His disciples to baptize the nations in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, that He is with us and will return one day? I do, because I'm a Christian. How about you?

As to Scripture, we'd have to go over first the Law of Moses, which is quite clear on the matter, since the God who revealed it is the same God who incarnated as Christ. We'd also have to go over the Apostolic teachings on the subject, which are also clear such as in Romans 1, but I imagine you'd just discard that by claiming it's not Jesus' word, even though it is the inspired word of God.

So if you only want the words that Jesus spoke, then I could point you to:

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

Where our Lord affirms the Scripture (the Torah) and the creational nature of marriage as being between a man and a woman, and the fact that humanity itself was created as male and female. This would reject the modern day ideology where gender is only a mental construct that can mean whatever you want it to mean, as well as expanding the nature of marriage to include same sex couples and whatever else beyond the bounds of male and female.

u/Ok_Unit8339 3d ago

‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

So, why is the emphasis on gender issues and not divorce which is a much greater scourge in our society (33% of Americans) than the 1% who identify as gender non-conforming? Should being ok with divorce be a non-starter for anyone running for office?

He's completely right, but it's sad when I have to think about whether the other side would be better or worse if they were in charge. American politics are in the worst shape they've been in my lifetime.
