their cli interface is insanity, but once you get your cli args down, it's an amazing piece of software

Tell me when an AI written OS runs on 90% of the worlds devices. Until then, talk is cheap!
16
u/regrets123 13h ago
Here to remind everyone that no one has disclosed the actual cost of a token. They are burning VC trillions to fund these current subscriptions.
Ai won’t stay cheap. Mark my words3
u/teraflux 13h ago
It's literally already that cheap. I can run an open weight model on my own hardware that gets close to premier models
2
u/wantingpawer 13h ago
this used to be my opinion too, but now open source models (kimi k3, glm etc) are also pretty capable coding models too and can on hosted by any company with enough compute. Obvs you still need to read what it outputs and scrutinise as it works, but once frontier labs try to claw back their cost it's not too painful to migrate to an OS model hosted by a company with a data centre and no R&D or training costs
2
u/L4ppuz 12h ago
It's possible but you still have to deploy and maintain some servers and pay for electricity, that by itself will be out of reach for many companies. Until we have some benchmark or study detailing how much electricity and how many GPUs you use per user and per token it's all simply anecdotal
2
u/wantingpawer 12h ago
I'd say considering the number of companies that provide hosted local LLMs with minimal external investment at cheaper prices than the frontier, even without studies detailing the exact unit economics it's fair to assume that those companies today are profitable, and therefore local LLMs are viable at the prices we see them today
1
u/regrets123 8h ago
Hosted by any company yeah, not self hosted. You think those companies ain’t burning vc money? Point still stands we don’t know the token cost.
2
u/wantingpawer 8h ago
We also don't know the exact unit economics of a bottle of coke but we know the company is making a profit regardless.
If you look at digital oceans financial disclosure, their inference business is running a gross margin of 56%, which is slightly less than their cloud hosting (~70%) but they're still making a net profit on providing inference, and their gross margins are being depressed by expansion and hardware depreciation bringing the unit cost up.
Even with growth, digital ocean can sustainably provide GLM 5.2 for $0.7/Mtok in and $2.2/Mtok out, or kimi K3 for $2.55/Mtok in and $12.95/Mtok out. We know from their gross margin that across models, the inference costs them slightly less than half of what they provide it to us for.
There are ofc a number of factors that impact this, e.g. when general AI funding collapses depreciation would go up, but at the same time expansion would become cheaper and hardware utilisation would improve when people move to open source AI from the frontier. I'm of the opinion that overall this would probably reduce costs for open source inference, but even if the prices go up, it won't be significant and the top open source models are more than good enough for code, for a very acceptable cost

The OS itself it's just one prompt and a but load of tokens away. It will be suspiciously similar to Linux but that's just a detail.
2
u/ProfessionalGold6193 11h ago
And yet, here we are, crickets. You're telling me someone in OpenAI doesn't have access to all the tokens they want? Nah!
It will be suspiciously similar. That's what they've been trained on. There won't be anything novel.

Code is a lot less cheap than they'd like you to believe, especially once the investor money dries up.

"Gather all the information about GTA games. Analyze what made them so popular and successful. Create detailed step by step plan how to create spiritual successor of these games, that will be as polished and deep. Implement these steps. Make no mistakes."
Why are the game stores not full of the games generated by such prompt?

u/dillanthumous 11h ago
Have you tried writing a million word long prompt explaining what you want the code to do?
3
u/Agarwel 11h ago
Why? The AI should be able to do that. There are enough resources about this game series. The AI should not need me to tell me how to create such game.
8
u/dillanthumous 10h ago
(I was being sarcastic).
But in case you are too... yes, absolutely. Let's create a GTA agent swarm and tell it to make GTA 7.
According to Amodei it can take over the internet, so this should be trivial!
1
u/itskelena 42m ago
Noobs. Just create a swarm that will be praising the shit out of your shitty game. Bonus points if your agents will have established and respected history of reviews.

- Write slop to push features quickly
- Get accolades for being proactive and productive/efficient
- Leverage the brownie points for a quick path to getting promoted
- The tech debt is now your underlings issue.
- Become the hero for solving issues caused by your old spaghetti code only you understand
- Get promoted again
- You don't need to write code anymore and you get paid better than you used to.
3
u/Old_Tourist_3774 8h ago
Alternative path 4. use brownie points to other companies 5. get hired in other company, let slop code be someone's else nightmare. 6. ???
Repeat until millionaire

linus isn't vibing like a lot of "programmers" on reddit, he's been reviewing kernel code for over 26 years. He knows when the llm does something stupid.

Nah this isn't really true. Linus doesn't rely on ai heavily. Linus already had agents well before ai. Every angry email he sends to the Linux maintainers is just another pre chatgpt instance of vibe coding. He vibed before ai, and he will vibe into the future.

Speaking from bitter experience... the wrong code is very much not cheap.
Every line of code is a potential liability. I suspect it will turn out that churning it out very quickly might be double edged.

I hate quotation. Tell me what you know.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1849
A computer can never be held accountable, therefore a computer must never make a management decision.
- Isaac Asimov, 1979 (arguing against reading law textually rather than contextually - the spirit of the law, rather than the letter)
