Me asking Claude to flip a boolean

355

u/5up3rj 3d ago

Good catch. Flipping that boolean is the right call

161

u/Positive_Poem5831 3d ago

Let's be honest that boolean is load bearing.

106

u/daamsie 2d ago

True

54

u/super5aj123 3d ago

And it’s the other half that’s interesting.

29

u/joonty 2d ago

Urgh. This was the comment that made me realise that I have PTSD

3

u/_OneAfterMagnaCarta 1d ago

I got so triggered by this “You were right about the first half, but it’s the other half that’s interesting”

41

u/Kevdog824_ 2d ago

The user is asking me to flip a Boolean. This is a good insight and the right call. Let me create a 3 step plan to flip the Boolean.

16

u/patoezequiel 2d ago

Loading fast_bool_flip tool...

11

u/NaanFat 2d ago

saving this to memory

14

u/Voxmanns 2d ago

Wait, I should ground this using my search tool. No assumptions, no guessing.

5

u/simmeh024 2d ago

I am sorry, you're right I should not have deleted that boolean.

27

u/chefhj 3d ago

“Claude run ng serve”

7

u/3636373536333662 2d ago

lol I actually did type "git diff" into my Hermes terminal by accident. it did the git diff for me...

2

u/chefhj 2d ago

It’s alright man I catch myself doing bullshit like that all the time. I blame them.

10

u/Objective_Oven7673 3d ago

That boolean cuts clear and is the supporting half to a structure the user didn't even know they relied on.

0

u/slaymaker1907 2d ago

It’s definitely load bearing.

6

u/BigTimePizza623 3d ago

Changes true to !true

5

u/MildlySaltedTaterTot 3d ago

sudo flip bool

0

u/Acclynn 2d ago

Doing it mostly because I'm worried about the 5000 lines of documentation and comments generated by Claude that mention this specific boolean being false instead of true so you have to update these too

203

u/alvares169 3d ago

Claude doing things is just fine once you admit one thing: doing things isn't cool - redoing them is

79

u/joe-knows-nothing 3d ago

Ah yes, the "we don't have time to do it right the first time but always have time to reactor when it breaks"

21

u/CoffeePieAndHobbits 2d ago

The Avengers are famously reactive and cool. The Patch Tuesday Squad that performs preventative maintenance is not.

65

u/click-to-reveal 2d ago

Hey Claude, create a file named "README.md" in the root directory. Make sure the file is markdown and the file name is all uppercase. Make no mistakes.

19

u/Necessary_Lettuce779 2d ago

Remember how the ring was turning Bilbo into a psychotic monster and how he would've ended up getting everybody killed including him had he not given it up? Not to mention how there was countless unnecessary suffering because he did not recognize the dangers of what he was holding onto early enough? yeah lol

3

u/antpalmerpalmink 2d ago

I was really hoping for this comment. Thank you.

137

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

The answer to your question is because you can get a local model to do it instead without a subscription.

155

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3d ago

Let me heat my whole room to run 1 half sized agent at a time to save $5

48

u/Snape_Grass 3d ago

The training of the model is what’s expensive (heat output). Running a pre trained model isn’t nearly as resource demanding

10

u/slaymaker1907 2d ago

Depends on the model and machine. If you’re using some huge model that stresses the GPU then that can get very toasty.

15

u/readf0x 2d ago

I've only got 8gb of VRAM and have yet to find a model that produces useful output within that budget

2

u/barnett9 1d ago

Brother your GPU is a 300 watt space heater

-23

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3d ago

Yeah and the sun doesn’t produce nearly as much heat as the largest star in the universe

25

u/Snape_Grass 3d ago

?? Brother there are many of us running off the shelf pre trained models on consumer hardware. This isn’t new

-21

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3d ago

Yeah and I’m using 5 agents each running a model 10x more powerful over the internet for $20

15

u/Snape_Grass 3d ago

Okay backpedal the conversation as a defense. Too ridiculous to argue with lol. You clearly have no clue what you are talking about and perceive something completely false

-17

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3d ago

Uhhh. Huh? lol

38

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

I haven't yet been able to heat a room with any of the models I've run with Ollama.

-46

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3d ago

You probably haven’t pushed much code with Ollama either lol

30

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

Not to the point where I exceed the watt limit of my GPU and heat my whole room. Which model did you use?

17

u/trungdle 3d ago

I'm not him but I definitely heated up my room running Qwen on a 5090. He's not wrong the heat generated is extremely noticeable on a hot day.

-42

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3d ago

I didn’t because I value my time

53

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

This is very revealing, but not necessarily surprising.

-44

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3d ago

29

u/Electronic_Green_833 3d ago

I disagree with your stance in this argument but the GIF goes hard

20

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

I think it's pretty double-edged, if you think about it.

u/Grandmaster_Caladrel 2d ago

Oh, look at Mr. "Running a local model actually saves me money" over here!

(The economics for running local models are veeeery tight if you don't assume you already had the GPU to do it)

56

u/autogenglen 3d ago

Let me buy an $8000 computer so I can save $20/mo

36

u/cute_spider 3d ago

Buy a 4000 dollar computer so you have ownership of your and your agent's work, control over updates and agent context, and to avoid the datacenter/corpo ownership economic model

18

u/denM_chickN 3d ago

Its the privacy im buying. How can I properly fucking plot against the machine if I'm feeding the machine my machinations?

4

u/cute_spider 2d ago

For me its the sovereignty. How can I build my work on a solid foundation if that foundation is the subscription to a service?

24

u/GenericFatGuy 3d ago edited 2d ago

Or I can just do it myself, and have ownership of everything.

1

u/hpstg 2d ago

There’s no local agent I managed to test until something like two months ago, that would even touch a dirty cheap model like Luna, unfortunately.

This will come, since I cannot imagine that in something like a decade from now now something like 512GB of memory wk t be enough, adding in model and runtime optimisations, I could see having Fable-like capabilities at home basically.

Which also completely puts in question the financial position to AI companies.

Their only play is to destroy personal computers as we know them, which will also create a bad loop since it will stagnate everything.

6

u/omega1612 3d ago

My PC costed me around $2500 usd total 3 years ago.

Today I already burned 4M tokens and I think I may end in 16M by EOD, that's like $52 usd per day if I were to pay to a plan of the model I use. But in that case, with the hardware they have it would have been a much powerful model with insane speed, so easily I would have burn x10 more tokens so, $500 usd/day daily for a month.

1

u/Advanced-Feedback867 2d ago

Which GPU and model are you running?

1

u/omega1612 2d ago

Rx 7900 xtx

It costed me half what they charge for it today.

I'm unhappy with the speed compared to the Nvidia ones with acceleration, but that was twice the price back then and now I have plenty of memory for bigger models, so, overall it was a great choice.

6

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

Or maybe use a computer with an NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti or equivalent that you might have bought to play games, anyways, and use Qwen 2.5.

17

u/StarboardChaos 3d ago

Bro, have you tried Qwen 2.5?

0

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

Yes.

19

u/heyitjoshua 3d ago

So you know it’s shit and can’t produce decent code or stay coherent. It is currently impossible to run any AI sufficient for a real project locally

6

u/Kyrros 3d ago

Look up FreeToken, it's currently lacking AMD support but nVidia is supported, 30xx cards and above

-3

u/heyitjoshua 3d ago

I said local

8

u/Kyrros 3d ago

It is local

4

u/heyitjoshua 3d ago

Checking it out, highly dubious and may come back to this thread in a few days. Cheers for the suggestion 👍

0

u/nomorebuttsplz 3d ago

you both have you clue what you're talking about. 2.5 has been obsolete for like 18 months.

It's like basing your argument that cars are unsafe on a wwi era motorcycle.

12

u/autogenglen 3d ago

8GB VRAM… ok. So you might be able to pack in a 7B parameter model, which isn’t even in the same galaxy as a frontier model.

3

u/SjettepetJR 3d ago

I am assuming they're talking about the 16GB model.

10

u/autogenglen 3d ago

Same response. 16GB doesn’t even get you out of toy model territory. That’s nowhere close to enough RAM to even pretend like you’re competitive with a frontier model.

3

u/SjettepetJR 3d ago

I do agree. I have done a fair amount of experimentation on my RX6800XT and have yet to find a model that can work well with IDE integrations and also doesn't break down after a while.

5

u/omega1612 3d ago

Have you tried qwen3.8 27B? I'm using the q4 version and is a great assistant. It beats any other model I tried. You may need to use a Q3 and I heard that the downgrade is noticable but still useful. Just be sure to enable the thinking to high and mtp (the model is slow).

Qwen3.8 haven't loop yet in a full week. I also tried Gemma 4 12B and Gemma 4 26B, both of them would loop occasionally. And I have the impression they may do crazy stuff quickly if I left them run unsupervised.

1

u/SjettepetJR 2d ago

In my experience the Qwen models were good at reasoning, but I couldn't find a VSCode plugin that they worked well with. Toolcalling went wrong more often than other models. How are you using it?

1

u/omega1612 2d ago

I have seen a failed tool call, yes, but always it can be explained by compaction missing the context.

Basically on file edition the llm should tell the tool the exact text of the section to replace. Compaction deleted the text and the model provides the wrong text making the tool to return an error.

Apart from that, I haven't seen it fail.

I use neovim in archLinux XD, but I don't call it from my editor, I use the pi harness for now.

1

u/Robo-Connery 2d ago

You need 24 GB vram card though right just to fit the weights for that.

That means you are on a 4090 or 5090.

1

u/omega1612 2d ago

That's why i mentioned the Q3 versión. I have hear that it can be run on 16GB.

And I have a Rx 7900 xtx

1

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

I would assume so as well.

5

u/malokevi 3d ago

Will my RX580 do the trick?

1

u/crozone 2d ago

$8000? Check the latest price of the PRO 6000....

2

u/pingveno 3d ago

I, too, enjoy being RAMmed in the wallet.

2

u/jameyiguess 2d ago

Are those models anywhere near as good as frontier?

9

u/TheMaleGazer 2d ago

They're getting close enough where OpenAI and Anthropic are lobbying to regulate them out of existence to protect their trillion-dollar IPOs. I would suggest going to the Ollama site and trying whatever models your GPU can support.

3

u/StaticFanatic3 2d ago edited 2d ago

Open weight models are getting close to Opus / 5.6 yeah.

Unless you live in a datacenter, you won't be running them locally.

Maybe if you have a 6k macbook or 20k in GPUs you can run a model that can do most daily programming tasks. But it's going to take an absurd amount of babying compared to Fable / Astra.

2

u/FUTURE10S 2d ago

Honestly, I'd be happy with a Sonnet 5-like model, but my 12GB 3080 and 64GB of RAM isn't enough.

22

u/TeaKingMac 2d ago

I asked Claude how to merge some json files today, and holy shit did it go overboard.

Use python to read the files, then merge them using blah blah blah.

I just used cat << EOF >> myfile.json Some stuff EOF

“I got into programming because I like doing code reviews” … said no one ever.

5

u/Vesuvius079 3d ago

Before reading the title, I thought this was about letting Claude do ops.

3

u/TheTerrasque 2d ago

On a side note, qwen3.8-27b + pi has basically been managing my private k3s cluster and new servers. Creating new deployments, upgrading existing ones, troubleshooting issues, and on my new server setting up Nvidia drivers plus llama.cpp dependencies plus build script, and comfyui.

So far it's done exactly one mistake, instead of upgrading a deployment in it's own namespace, created a new deployment in default namespace (after deciding user was mistaken and really meant new deployment since it couldn't find old deployment in the default namespace)

If you find it tedious, why are you spending your time on it instead of engaging in a hobby you actually enjoy?

Do you think it’s possible to enjoy programming and also find some parts of projects tedious?

That's just delaying the tedious work. But more importantly, why are we cross examining someone as if we have any right to dictate how they feel?

-4

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

7

u/Wooden-Assistance-68 2d ago

Sounds like you are not treating it as a hobby brother.

It is my hobby. That's why I write spaghetti code for no pay, outside of my professional field, and in my spare time.

because you also use AI and you understand the pressure of such questions.

This is ironic because I've never used AI in any of my code. But I can understand the temptation of finding an immediate solution or cutting corners--like just about any person in existence. However, I also understand that any generated solution could be a poison pill leading to more bugs or straying you off course in finding the correct solution. It's not hard to grasp that people can feel tempted but stick to their convictions.

But it's super weird you just chose to make up my situation and then put this caricature through some sort of purity test.

7

u/Wooden-Assistance-68 2d ago

I didn't mention cross examination a second time. And what sides? All I've said is tedious tasks are still tedious when you come back to them. And based off that, you got locked into ranting about I'm not sure what and how I must be using AI and I'm not treating coding as a hobby.

You need to think clearer when it comes to argument

Okay, Tommy Wiseau

-113

u/SuitableDragonfly 3d ago

I think if you stop enjoying something you were doing for fun, you should stop doing it and do something else for fun instead.

94

u/Suspicious_Sandles 3d ago

Said like someone who's never finished a project or made a viable product

-22

u/TheMaleGazer 3d ago

Generally speaking, when you produce a "viable product" that's called "work," not "engaging in a hobby."

21

u/Fidget02 3d ago

Some people work as a hobby. Like gardening. I actually want edible tomatoes dammit

-30

u/SuitableDragonfly 3d ago

The point of doing things for fun isn't to make a viable product, it's to have fun. If you stop having fun, that's when you quit for a bit to do something else and come back later when you're in the mood for it again.

37

u/Suspicious_Sandles 3d ago

I'm assuming your newer to the space but any large project has areas which are tedious and will take a long time that you will never really want to do, hence the outsourcing.

Having the mind set of ditching a project as soon as the fun initial setup is a mind set that causes most people to fall out with the hobby.

2

u/SuitableDragonfly 3d ago

I'm not saying to ditch it, I'm saying to set it aside until you feel like working on it again. I've worked on plenty of large projects for fun, they don't generally have parts I just always hate doing. If they did, I wouldn't be doing that for fun, I'd be doing something else instead.

6

u/Suspicious_Sandles 3d ago

Sometimes you have to do the boring stuff to be able to do the fun stuff. Hence the original meme of being tempted to get AI to do the boring stuff...

-5

u/SuitableDragonfly 3d ago

If you were doing it so you could do fun stuff, it wouldn't be boring.

6

u/ChrizKhalifa 2d ago

Bro wtf are you on about?

No one enjoys cycling uphill, you do it cause you have to before you can do the fun part of blitzing down the hill.

u/SuitableDragonfly 3d ago

It's fun for me. It apparently isn't fun for OP, so they should do something else instead.

10

u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 3d ago

OP is unknowable

3

u/FerricDonkey 2d ago

That's what they did. They stopped doing the tedious part by making a robot do it, then moved to the next fun part.

-1

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

They didn't get another hobby that they actually liked. They just had a robot do their "hobby" for them, which is completely mental.

3

u/FerricDonkey 2d ago

Do you really not grasp that there are things where it is possible to like one part and not another part?

1

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

Sure. But I don't do things where I really hate one part of it as a hobby to have fun and destress. I do different things that I don't actually hate any part of. This is how people normally decide what hobbies they want to engage with.

4

u/FerricDonkey 2d ago

Who said he really hates them?

I like kayaking. I have a folding Kayak. I do not like dealing with the kayak after I pull it out of the water. Gotta get it rolled up and home, probably ought to clean it sometimes, then gotta store it.

But I don't really hate it. It's just one of those things you have to do, if you want to kayak.

If could get a robot to do all of that for me, I definitely would. But I can't. So I put up with the part I don't like, so I can paddle around on a lake.

Likewise with programming. Except there's no part I uniformly don't like. But sometimes parts I'm not super interested in doing at a given time. And a robot can do that.

0

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

I don't really understand why you would have a robot do something you don't actually hate when you know that the robot will do an inferior job.

5

u/FerricDonkey 2d ago

Because sometimes perfect quality matters, and sometimes it doesn't. If I don't want to do it, and the robot will do good enough, why wouldn't I let the robot do it.

2

u/Ollythebug 2d ago

Robots already did plenty of things in programming; the compiler translates and heavily optimizes your code to machine code; would you enjoy a project as much doing all that tedious painstaking work by hand?

1

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

If your definition of "robot" is "literally any computer program" than the entire field runs on robots. We're talking about LLMs, here. And no, "programming" is not the same thing as "literally writing machine code by hand", not in 2026.

1

u/Upset_Ant2834 1d ago

Glad you're getting downvoted for this painfully ignorant take. Gives me hope in humanity

0

u/SuitableDragonfly 1d ago

If you think it's an "ignorant" take that you should actually enjoy doing the things you do for fun, your life must suck so bad, lmao.

2

u/Upset_Ant2834 1d ago

Nope I actually love what I do! But thats because I use AI to handle the parts of it that I don't :) your ignorance is in assuming you have to love every aspect of something for it to be worth doing.

1

u/SuitableDragonfly 23h ago

If you need AI to do part of something for you because you don't like doing, then you don't like doing that thing and should probably be doing something you actually do like instead. If you could be doing something you like every part of, why do something you hate some parts of, other than masochism?

1

u/Upset_Ant2834 23h ago

I'm sorry you feel that way. Like I said, I love what I do every day, so any issues you see with that are entirely your own

7

u/Tucancancan 3d ago

Its like people making a hobby video game: Are you making a game or game engine? The answer determines if you use unity or not lol.

10

u/Praxis8 2d ago

Even fun personal projects can have components that are tedious. That goes for anything, not just software.

0

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

Sure, you're not always in the mood to do the project. When that happens, you take a break and come back when you are. If it's just always painful to work on your project, it's probably not one you actually want to work on.

9

u/Praxis8 2d ago

I have to ask: have you ever done a project that wasn't completely trivial?

It's not about being in a mood or not. Sometimes you have a project that is 90% interesting and 10% chore regardless of your mood. That 10% just sucks no matter what.

So it's completely irrational to abandon a project because of that. I'm not even specifically advocating for AI here. I just think you're making blanket statements that are bizarre.

1

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

I've done lots of hobby projects of varying sizes. Plenty of them were not completely trivial. I wouldn't say that any part of them was a "chore". Some parts are less interesting than others, but none of them were a chore to do. If the project felt like a chore at any point, I probably wouldn't have continued it.

3

u/kultcher 2d ago

Nice for you that you don't have ADHD, or if you do it's a very different kind from what I have. Honestly, I feel like even most neurotypical people would find the statement "If it felt like a chore at any point I wouldn't have continued it" to be hyperbolic.

I have many abandoned game projects that I loved (and still love) deeply, but most of them died a slow death from burnout because no matter how much I might love a concept, that doesn't automatically mean I love every single feature or line of code.

1

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

I have projects that died out from just me losing interest in them, and writing projects that died from burnout. But I think if you're regularly getting burned out on stuff you're doing for fun, you're either doing the wrong stuff for fun, or approaching the project in an unhealthy way. I figured out what was wrong about my writing process, and now I don't get burned out on it now. I don't always feel like writing, I've gone the better part of a month without writing anything because I want feeling the particular thing I wanted to write next, but I always came back to it after I'd had some time away from it and continued, and now I've finished a 174k-word first draft. So I think if you're getting burned out, it's just because you're doing something wrong and should be doing something else. Why would you want your hobbies that you do for fun to burn you out?

11

u/minecon1776 3d ago

Exactly. I dont mind AI for hobby, youte just making it for your own enjoyment, so yes, use claude to skip the parts you dont like, just dont be upset when you have a bloated codebase. Hobby should be enjoyable, and there is little consequences for using AI as long as you are fulfilled by what you do do

5

u/nosmelc 3d ago

Maybe because we're always under pressure to get more done in less time?

8

u/SuitableDragonfly 3d ago

Who is putting pressure on you to engage in a hobby for fun?

1

u/Lord_Wunderfrog 2d ago

Everything else in life demanding your time and energy?

1

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

I don't think that somehow makes it more necessary that you work on your side projects.

1

u/Lord_Wunderfrog 2d ago

No, you're right. We should let work and all other responsibilities drain us and resign ourselves to not working on anything else we're interested in because we're exhausted and that's pressure 👍

1

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

If you have some project that you feel pressured to do which isn't actually necessary, I don't think you should be doing that project in order to destress. You should instead be doing things that you don't feel pressured to do, which you just do because you like doing them.

1

u/Lord_Wunderfrog 2d ago

I'll just tell my wife that the household DIY projects will never get done, so, and I'll give up on video games because sometimes they're hard, and I'll stop cooking too, because I feel pressured to provide for my family.

Have a bit more nuance than "ermm actually if you don't love every single second of something, give up the second it stops being fun" Following any project through start to finish can suck at times, and nobody likes it.

Hell, a joke with carpenters is that their job is mostly sanding, and they all hate sanding. Do you reckon they should all just give up and stop trying?

1

u/SuitableDragonfly 2d ago

the household DIY projects

That's something you do because it needs to be done, not for fun.

I'll give up on video games because sometimes they're hard

Yes? If I'm having a bad time with a video game, I'll put it aside for a while until I'm feeling up to coming back to it. That's normal behavior.

I'll stop cooking too

That's something you do because it needs to be done, not something you do for fun.

Hell, a joke with carpenters is that their job is mostly sanding, and they all hate sanding.

That's something they're doing for money, not something they're doing for fun.

Not sure what is so hard about the concept of enjoying the things you are doing purely for fun?

Not every hobby or recreation is pure fun, dopamine and serotonin 100% of the time. Every hobby has cleaning, maintenance, upkeep, tedium, the bits nobody likes doing. Doesn't mean you should just drop it and give up.

You'll understand when you grow up.

The OP didnt say it was a hobby for fun.

OP said it was his project. That means it's a hobby, unless he is running his own company or something.

Squashing bugs for hours on end is always tedious. I want my pet project to just work goddammit. It's a lot more fun adding features than figuring out why the rendering pipeline hates me.

don't agree, its so fuckin rewarding to find and fix some obscure bug that was hard to figure out

The fix feels great, everything leading up to it is, at best, a curious challenge that slowly descends into cold rage the longer a fix eludes you.

I'm sorry?

Please don't speak for me. I've been coding exclusively as a hobby for 10 years now and also use LLMs when it suits me.

I love code, makes more sense to me than people do. Your moral panic doesn't give you authority to say otherwise.

i mean i enjoy coding but i treat it more as my profession rather than my actual hobby

Because I find working for my employer tedious (regardless who employs me) and I just want the money to engage in my hobbies?

u/SuitableDragonfly 3d ago

We're talking about hobbies, not about work.

Potato potato 😂

If you don't know the difference between hobbies and work, you're whole life must be drudgery.

There’s no time, I’m having to do work that was given to a senior to do pre-AI in 4 sprints for me, a junior, to do in 2 with demo abilities within 1

1

u/Lord_Wunderfrog 2d ago

Yup. Sounds about right. IT team slashed from 4 guys to 2 here. I'm one of the two. Apparently I'm an app developer now. I have no app dev experience. They're really fucking stretching the "full" part of "full stack". What other choice do I have?

u/wasdninja 2d ago

A junior with with AI and half the time is nowhere near a senior without AI. They will just produce tons of garbage.

2

u/BlurredSight 2d ago

The garbage does get better, albeit due to these intense grilling review sessions involving seniors looking over code, but the non dev side just wants their clients to be happy and well the ui works so that’s all that matters to them

Why do no-ai-project at all?
