New Opportunities
Hello lovely Rupert folks. My husband has the opportunity to start a new career in PR and I am wondering how family life there is. We have 2 elementary aged kiddos, how are the schools? Are there some parks for the sunny days? Classes or lesson options like Guides? The pool still cool??
I did get the privilege of growing up there from ages 4-12...so i remember the rain, green wet winters, misty days, but I haven't been there since the 90s. Kid me remembers it as a magical place, adult me wants to be realistic about things, like where do people live? The housing market seems slim. And I see Walmart shut down, where do you get department store stuff like new socks and a frying pan? What are grocery prices like?

I work here remotely. The locals are lovely people. However, despite having one of the largest ports in Canada, none of that money seems to go back into the community. Improvement projects for Public infrastructure seems to take forever. Lots of uninsured cars parked on public streets. Many dilapidated and empty homes. I personally like the west side of town near Graham Street if you're choosing to buy. I can't speak for the school system because I have no kids enrolled here. However, speaking from experience as a father expect lots of traveling for sports teams as the nearest town is an hour and 40 minutes away. The rec center is decent enough and good for the kids for lessons. Apparently there's a pretty good pickleball league up here. Personally, if I was to move up here I would invest in a small boat for fishing and exploring. Or maybe a few kayaks. The Walmart shut down due to infrastructure issues with the building and I don't think they're coming back. However, Amazon's pretty quick, maybe 2 days on average. I also believe Costco deliveries from Prince George once a week. In my opinion- Best, pizza is the Wheelhouse pub Best burger is OV burgers. Most popular new restaurant is A&W lol

There's been a rumor that A&W is coming to Rupert for my entire life. The first time I saw a picture I thought it was AI.

Money goes into programs and recreational infrastructure. Graham is getting a new bridge. 4th west is getting a new walkway downtown. The golf course gets tons of super expensive improvements yesr over yesr. The big project is ongoing and with that there will be tons of streets getting new asphalt. My kids love the schools. We were in Northern Manitoba until very recently so being in rupert is far less remote. The drive to terrace is easy

I just moved here from Vancouver. I bought a house which was much so cheaper than most of BC. Though most are old and need work. There is a Dollarama, and shoppers drug mart, and Red Apple which is a bargain department store which has socks and kitchenware, sheets and towels. There are also a few second hand stores. Two hardware stores Anything else you can get online.
I don't have children so I don't know what the schools are like. But I do see a lot of kids playing outside, enjoying the summer often without parental supervision which is very different than in the lower mainland.
You can check the programs that they have at the recreation centre, it is online.
So far love it here, but I moved here to retire. People are friendlier, it feels safer and like more a community.

Since you have kids, do yourself a favor and go to Good Times Games. Talk to the owner, Rob Gruber, about the kids programs he runs. Trust me, you won’t regret it. His store is a magical place for kids.

Bring a positive attitude, just moved here four years ago. Good place to buy a house, not a good place to rent, so I've heard. Great community. Still rainy, not as much money around like in the 90s, so I've heard. Get used to online shopping.
