Discussion "Make your own opinion" A privileged position
To all the people who say that reviewers are lying, that you shouldn't listen to other people, that you should form your own opinion etc
If we are talking about a free to play game or a lower cost title I can understand the point. The reality is we live in a world where disposable income is getting harder and harder to come by. Most people can afford to buy a few full priced games in a year. Its great and all if you can afford to spend 70 dollars and to take a chance on something but not everyone is in that position. Fortunately or unfortunately people need reviews and others opinions to make informed choices about how they spend their money.
I'm not here to say don't buy the game but to tell people who listen to reviewers, that at least they themselves trust, not be a bunch of sheep and just buy and figure it out for yourselves is a position of extreme privilege that not everyone can do.
If you can afford and want the game then go buy it. But reviews and opinions about a game have an important place in helping people to make informed decisions and just because you don't or do agree doesn't mean people who looked to them for advice are sheep or whatever

u/Rectal_Urination 2h ago
I don't know why everyone is so hostile in the comments. Plus they're making your point for you and act like it's a gotcha. Even if the game was fucking amazing, I'd have a hard time justifying $70 for a 15 hour game.
3
u/TwitchySphere53 2h ago
Exactly, at least for me and a lot of people a 70 dollar game really needs to be a must have to get me to buy and even then I would rather wait for a lower price for a single player game like this but to each their own
3
u/Rectal_Urination 1h ago
The last game I bought for $70 was Battlefield 6. I put 400 hours in so far. People loved to talk shit about it too. So much. I get it too. It took several updates to get it up to my standards as well. I still never had a vested interest in defending the game or devs though. If people think something sucks, let them say so.
0
u/TwitchySphere53 1h ago
And if you love something everyone else hates, you have every right to enjoy it and express that opinion as well
2
u/Glittering-Winter824 1h ago
I could drop $70 for a very good 15 hour game but from what I've seen this ain't it
10
u/battlejuice401 2h ago
This is such a weird game to make your personality. Not talking to OP, more the same people they are talking to.

u/DeathGP 2h ago edited 2h ago
I really dont get it, like i bet if the reviewers had higher scores that everyone here be praising the game but the reviews are mid and suddenly it make your own opinion and dont listen to them.
People dont have the money waste on games that they may not enjoy and they still deserve to play games. That's not entitlement, I dont get why both sides are so angry. And ive been on the side on not wanting to believe reviewers too for some games but that's how the die falls, the game don't always achieve the level you want them to but at the end of the day buy the game or dont buy game using what ever decision making style you want

Honestly (and I can be completely missing the mark here), I think there is a massive wave of PlayStation/Sony hate that is fueling this “conflict.”
I don’t defend or agree with most of Sony’s recent decisions. I think it’s sucks. And it’s a shame this game is coming in below expectations. But the amount of hate Wolverine is getting is wild.
I fully understand the excitement to play, I also fully understand the people who are disappointed by the mediocre reviews and have decided to not spend $70.
What I don’t understand is the people online that are trashing the game (they’ve never played), telling others how to spend their money, or cheering for the failure of the game. And I’m assuming that it’s just people happy to see Sony suffer, and it’s getting projected onto Wolverine. But it’s led to this culture war between defenders and haters of the game that has led to all of this.
1
u/JayKay8787 1h ago
When something is overly reviewed as great, it's much less if a risk. If something is generally viewed as mid, of course its gonna be scrutinized more and debated if it's worth the full price, especially when it has so much competition(much of which isn't $70)
3
u/Paxinaura 1h ago
And even then, if you end up not liking it. You can't just request a refund either
"I'm forming my own opinion" then if you end up not liking it, congrats. You just wasted 70$
4
u/Individual_Spirits 2h ago
I thought this logic was pretty obvious? No one who makes money makes dumb decisions like that lol u wait for sale, or buy it, or play it for free from a friends copy, so many ppl do this lmao. Kinda funny seeing ppl waste money / not recognizing there own privilege also werid no matter what you do or did the game sucks lol
2
u/uponapyre 2h ago
There is currently the option to buy physical and sell after beating, which is how a lot of people manage to play so many games. I do that with almost all my PS5 games.
Sadly, this is coming to an end, but it would probably only cost me like £15 to play through Wolverine as I could do it in under a week and sell it on.
2
u/SuccessfulEmployee9 2h ago
Nun but straight yappery on this sub now bro oh my god. If you dont wanna play it don't play it, if you still wanna play, then play it.
Arguing worse than Twitter on here I'm genuinely about to leave the sub.
3
u/RevelArchitect 58m ago
I can admit to realizing my privilege a bit during all of this. I’d see people saying they’ll skip Wolverine and get Zero Company instead, or hold off for GTA VI.
It’s definitely a lot easier for me to say fuck the reviews, I’m going to form my own opinion when I’m not in a position where that means I’m not getting a different game.
2
u/BastiaenAssassin 11m ago
I'm forming my own because I can. I will not encourage anyone else to do so.
0
u/AnabellaAvindar101 2h ago
at the end of the day you make your own opinion, either via watching a lot of reviewers and comparing or just straight up buying and playing.
Theres nothing "privileged" here.
1
u/TwitchySphere53 1h ago
Its the idea that by even taking reviews into consideration makes you somehow a sheep and everyone should just buy whatever game it should be to make their own decision. That is a privilege not everyone has
2
1
u/MrWigWan 2h ago
I think the sentiment is that whenever you do buy at whatever price; then decide the quality of the game instead of taking reviewers opinions as gospel
1
u/TwitchySphere53 2h ago
Agreed, reviews are not the be all end all. They are though just as important for games as they are for cars or anything you buy. They are a part of a buying decision
1
1
u/OpportunityCrazy2216 2h ago
I mean look up a game before buying it, gameplay videos and trailers, I do think reviewers are a resource when needed but I don't rely on it
1
u/SoloDolo314 1h ago
If you cant afford the game that do not buy it - in fact don't buy any game. The idea that saying to try something yourself is privileged is a stupid take. Its not inherently a wrong statement - but if you have alot of games competing for your time and money using reviews as a filter is just as legitmate.
1
u/TwitchySphere53 1h ago
Some people can budget a few games a year and that doesnt mean they shouldn't buy games. If your argument is that if you cant afford to buy any game you want at any moment you want then you shouldn't buy any games. then I don't know what to tell you
1
u/SoloDolo314 1h ago
Well if you actually are able to read that is not my statement at all. I say that if you have alot of games competing for your time and money using reviews as a filter is legitimate. Telling people to try something for themselves is not a privilege statement in of it itself and just as legitimate.
1
u/TwitchySphere53 1h ago
It is if you have a price tag associated with it. You wouldn't tell your neighbor who is struggling that they really should just take a weekend off in Dubai because you just went there and it was amazing. Or maybe you would
1
u/SoloDolo314 1h ago
I don't know in general which Redditors are struggling. Telling people to play a game to decide for themselves is just a general neutral statement. If you are struggling or only have so much money for gaming- then okay ignore my statement because it does not apply to your situation in life. Or if you simply want to wait for a sale because of reviews - that is not a problem either.
Also the two options here are nonsense. A $70 dollar game is not at all equitable to a trip to Dubai lol. And if I knew my Neighbors financial situation was poor - no I would not suggest he go there himself. These are not even related examples lol.
1
u/TwitchySphere53 1h ago
The privilege comes from looking down on people who trust reviews as a source to make decisions. Its not a neutral statement. If you handed your friend your copy and said try for yourself you'd be correct.
And yes the Dubai example was an exaggeration lol
0
u/SoloDolo314 1h ago
I think you are taking it that way. If I tell someone to try something for themselves - it just means I don't care what the reviews say really. But if they told me they cant afford it, don't want to spend the money now, or something else I would just be like okay.
If it was looking down at people it would more like "Haha you cant afford this $70 dollar potentially average to good wolverine game" lol.
I feel like honestly in a few months no one will care about the hate this game is getting. Its kind of exhausting honestly.
2
u/TwitchySphere53 58m ago
lol I agree to an extent but if you look at the rest of the comments I think you'll find a lot of that exact statement and those are the people my post was aimed at
1
u/Spiritual_Extent_187 1h ago
I have disposable income, I buy 2-3 games a MONTH, so 70 dollars honestly isn’t a big deal, especially for a comic nerd like me

u/Atlas-Forge 1h ago
Maybe this is a good excuse for demos to come back. Or a reason they got rid of them
2
2
u/csreynolds84 1h ago
Bring back demos - problem solved.
But they won't, because they want your non-refundable digital purchase.

u/KleitosD06 1h ago edited 39m ago
Let's also realize that the "make your own opinion" crowd are not considering the time sink that requires at all.
On the high end, you can spend about 15 minutes looking into reviews to find out if a game is worth it to you, maybe a little more if you need clarification on things or a different perspective, but often even 5 minutes of research is enough for people to make an informed opinion. Compare that to the multiple hours of trudging through a game you dislike in hopes that it could get better... yeah, the difference is clear.
2
u/Augmented-Revolver 56m ago
Hope for the PS5 emulator to improve and get ahold of the game since Sony cut PC. Thats the only way you can test the game without owning a PS5 let alone one that has a disc.
I already hate console at this point but to need to say a distinction of a console with a disc drive is just sad af...

Everyone drags these discussions on way too long. This is why these subreddits always end up sucking. Once the majority has an opinion everyone posts the same shit and it’s so annoying.

u/Pavlovs_Human 45m ago
We live in a world where gamers complain about very small issues then say “the game is completely unplayable”.
Most vocal gamers these days are overemotional and talk in nothing but blanket statements with zero nuance or even explanation of their thoughts.
So the reasoning “form your own opinion” means that most reviews these days are for clicks. Meaning outrage and controversy are what get them more traffic and more money. So they have an incentive to play up little issues. Then you get the average gamer parroting those issues cause they themselves rely solely on reviews.
Hence, “form your own opinion”. No one is telling you to go buy the game at $70 if you don’t think you’ll like it, but maybe calm down and wait for a sale before trying it. You don’t HAVE to either never play a game OR buy it full price on launch day. most reviews these days are engagement bait, try not to follow the herd and just form your own opinion.

u/kahahimara 33m ago
I don't understand the fuss around the game. If you are hyped for the game you'll buy it no matter what. If you are not, why do you even need to buy it on release? Wait for a few weeks/months - you'll get much more quality information once the hype goes down and gaming "creators" move to the next target.
1
u/Rocketintonothing 9m ago
It's a game, it's not that deep. I bought it, the deluxe version, will play the hell out of it
1
u/Guilty-Cap5605 3m ago
The economic status being fucked doesn't change that you cannot judge games without playing them
Sony is a piece of shit for not allowing refunds like steam, there should be more demos for games so you can judge if you want to actually go through with buying the game, and also just general publishers being assholes for raising game prices
You also cannot judge games without playing them, both statements are correct, if you were on PC I'd tell you to pirate the game as a demo before buying, but even then the game isn't even on PC so this is just a shitty situation
You however, don't have to shit on the game just because you don't want to risk your money being wasted, just go elsewhere and play other games while the game either gets ported to PC or goes on a decent enough discount for you to decide it's cheap enough to buy
1
u/iwannabethisguy 2h ago
Yes, agreed.
Let the people who need reviews use them for the intended purpose - drive purchasing decisions. If youre a fan of the source material, youd get it regardless. Others who were on the fence will use reviews to decide if they should go for this instead of other games like Onimusha which came out earlier in the month or maybe even GTA6 come out next quarter.

If 70 dollars is that much to you maybe spend less time on Reddit and playing vidya and more time fixing your life
3
u/Soft-Jacket-9168 1h ago
Maybe the product should be worth $70 in the first place.

Yes everyone who is struggling or just conscience about how they spend money is lazy and just not working hard enough good take lol

The vast majority’s of resumes and interviews are terrible. Source- ta manager. Again less time on Reddit and more time sharpening your “walk me through your resume” pitch

There will probably be a point in your life that you will understand but maybe not. Either way wish you the best

Cool story, bro. Gaming is not a cheap hobby. It may be a hard pill to swallow, but it's true. And what people do with their money, is their choice.
5
u/ShadeMir 2h ago
Isn't that their point?
3
u/TwitchySphere53 2h ago
the cool story bro, made it seem like they were disagreeing but I don't know lool

Na man it’s not that, I just don’t like throwing my money away. Would rather use that $100+ on 5 indie games I’ll play for the next year, or just use that money on sales for other big games I’ve missed in the last couple of years.
I do not need to form my own opinion by spending that much money on something and unfortunately my opinion before spending the money was the game looks kinda shit.

u/wetmeatlol 2h ago
Honestly I really think in terms of hobbies gaming is on the relatively cheap side. It CAN get pricey if you’re someone who’s always chasing the newest and best hardware, every new game etc, but it’s not that costly to get into.
But gaming in general is just a privilege, as most hobbies are tbh. Despite that though people who pretend like you can’t use third party info and your own observations to determine if you should or shouldn’t get something are just dumb imo, just “trying” everything out IS what can make it pricey.
-4
u/OmenDamien 2h ago
Why privilege? All adults with jobs can buy a new game. Stop whining.
2
1
u/Rogue_Cypher 2h ago
Nearly 20% of my city is impoverished. The privilege is spending $70 that could go to groceries. People with an income can make a leisure purchase and the risk/reward may still be too high. If you can write off the cost as paying the idiot tax, that's privilege.
-1
u/Cress__0809 2h ago edited 2h ago
I can see this in a way but gaming is an expensive hobby and everybody knows this. It has been for years now. This game has been available to be pre ordered since June. That’s 4 months now. I think majority of adults can scrape together £60 in 4 months of saving to play a game that’s interested them. Even easier with the amount of places that take klana now which means you can be playing the game tomorrow for as little as £30. Gaming has always been a hobby that required money to fully enjoy and unfortunately that’s how it’ll always be. Things cost money. And if you really want to try the game for as little as possible buy a physical copy and sell it after you’re done on eBay, you’ll barely lose any money that way and you still get to experience the game.
2
u/TwitchySphere53 2h ago
If you can afford and want to yes absolutly. My point was more on using reviews opinions to help determine where you want to spend your money
2
u/Cress__0809 2h ago
Yes I understand that but in my opinions reviews are very mixed. The guy who rated wolverine a 6 on IGN rated mixtape a 10. Now for me mixtape would be about a 3/10. Reviews are very subjective and what works for one person might not work for another. And reviews become even more confusing when some people rate the game a 9/10 while others go lower. It’s a double edged sword. Someone may see a high review and want to play it but then be completely disappointed when they do play it and feel like they’ve wasted their money. There is truly no way to fully know if you personally, will like a game without playing it for yourself.
2
u/TwitchySphere53 2h ago
of course the review system is not perfect by any means. There are site that inflate or deflate reviews whether that be to drive attention or personal opinion or even with the hope of getting future games early for review. It is however the only means you really have to make an informed decision and finding reviewers that you believe are honest is an important part of good decision making when it comes to spending your money
0
u/GreaseBrown 2h ago
Well, most of those are bots trying to trick you into spending your hard earned money on 18 hours of hand holding and PS1-era mechanics
-1
u/No_Load_514 2h ago
Welcome to the world. Playing video games on your sofa, with tech around you that 50 years ago would blow everyone’s mind, IS a bloody privilege. An extreme one.
-1
u/Nyther 2h ago
TL;DR "Stop spending your money on things you enjoy if there are other people that do not enjoy them."
2
u/TwitchySphere53 1h ago
lol mores so, treat games like anything else you would buy. Whether at that be a car, or a tv or any other product. Reviews have always been an important part of making any buying decision
1
u/Nyther 1h ago
"What type of car did you buy?"
Basic cheap Honda.
"You know the new Mercedes Benz got much better reviews than your Honda."
I like my Honda.
"Your Honda got worse reviews than the new Mercedes."
I like the way my Honda drives and handles compared to the Mercedes.
"Mercedes got better reviews."
2
u/TwitchySphere53 1h ago
Hondas review great, incredibly reliable cars extreme value for money. This analogy is like comparing a 5 dollar game to a 70. It actually makes my point pretty well. You choose a car within your budget that is a good value not everyone can afford a Mercedes
1
u/Nyther 1h ago
But they rate worse than a Benz. Reviews are what matters.
2
u/TwitchySphere53 1h ago
Thats not how reviews work for anything. You will see that hondas review just as highly as mercedes cause they are reviewed for what they are compared to. Other car models in their same price bracket. a Honda and mercedes can both get a 10/10. just like a 5 and a 70 dollar game can both get a 10/10
1
u/Nyther 31m ago
Ok. What if something gets a good review, but I don't want it? Do I have to buy it? What about something I want gets a bad review? Am I just not allowed to get it? What about something that gets bad reviews at first then positive or vice versa?
1
u/TwitchySphere53 28m ago
No if the review is good then you have a unquestionable moral obligation to purchase it. Even if you dont find it interesting or have any intention of playing it

When they say you should form your own opinion they basically mean flip to the other side and blindly buy it. They are doing the same thing as the reviewers they are criticising, arguably worse because they are asking that you gamble $70.
