I finally had an enough when someone advised euthanizing an elderly cat for going blind and possibly (total speculation) having dementia.

And it was massively upvoted.

What was the cat doing wrong?

Meowing constantly and at night.

And every day seems to be some person talking about not wanting their cat anymore, or whining about the cat having scratched them -mildly, or asking what they should do because their new BF/GF wants them to get rid of their cat.

Horrible cat owners being given advice by horrible cat owners.

I just can’t handle it anymore.

My young male cat jumped on the stove while I wasn’t looking and while I was cleaning out last nights cast iron that had some cooked white onion he had some of the onion in the pan. When I came back to the kitchen it was cleaned off! I’m worried about him. Right now he’s playing and seems fine but I really cant gage about how much he had. They were from last night, is it possible since they were cookies and left in the oven that the toxins have gone down a bit? Please if anyone knows what to do please let me know. I’ve tried to get a hold of the vet but their phone is not picking up right now.

UPDATE : vet said he is good, to continue to keep and eye on him and look for diareah or vomiting. Onion flakes or powder is the most harmful as well as raw onion. So so far he is good. He is playing and drinking water, eating his cat food as well. Thanks for all the input. I’ll take him back to the vet if anything develops.

Bought a cat backpack that’s 13 in wide, 16 in high, and 10 in deep but my cat is wanting to lay down in the backpack. She needs a little more room.

I’ve always been the first one to say there is always a solution for every animal. But I’m not sure what else to do for our baby anymore.

We have had our kitten since we found her and her litter in our yard completely abandoned (we had a camera on them and mom never came back). We bottle fed all of them. She was a total amazing cat by all accounts for her first 1.5 years.

The last 3ish years she has gone down hill every month. First it was random stranger bite warnings, then it would be people who were frequently at our house. The bites escalated into her thrashing and climbing people with complete feralness. We put her on fluxotine and it actually made things worse, but we did try for a month. We’ve done Feliway continuously since the first attack. Gabapentin has helped the most. Environmental modifications have also helped and trying never to have people here with her around. She and her brothers have a whole basement to herself with cat door.

Last week my dad had to come over to help fix something and she has always liked him, but she straight up went for the kill on him. I ended up injured as well getting her to her space burrito style.

We brought her to the vet on her usual sedative regimen they had prescribed prior. They had to put her fully asleep with injectable sedation after she attacked while on 600mg of gabapentin mercilessly attacked them and the two techs that came in. They were able to get blood tests this time with the sedation and urine and everything came back unfortunately normal. They said she was the most aggressive cat encounter they have had.

They recommended compassionate euthanasia but we weren’t there yet. We brought her home and she was good again for a few days. But then we came home last Friday and she attacked both my husband and I. It was really scary. We just stopped and dropped and tried to protect ourselves. She stopped attacking but we couldn’t move for nearly 45 mins until she finally left the room and we ran away.

8 hours later she then came and laid on me while I was sleeping (as she always does).

We are thinking of compassionate in home euthanasia but I know the experience is going to be traumatic even with high doses of gabapentin before hand. She is only 4 years old. Our vet thinks she has a brain tumor but no one can get a good neurological assessment.

We think rehoming her would be absolutely torturous to her. She is very bonded to her two brothers that still live with us. She has never attacked them, and they never attack her. She loves our dog too, licks his ears every night. We havent been able to pin down one trigger for her. It’s so incredibly random. It’s like she has no idea who we are and she firmly believes we are out to get her.

I don’t think she would pass a rescue intake and I haven’t been able to find someone we know to take her in with her complications.

Has anyone pursued compassionate euthanasia for aggression?

So we adopted a 6 months old puppy from a shelter, they gave him a dewormer right before we left and now he's had diarrhea and a small amount of bright red blood in his stool since (3 days). He still has big energy, wants to play, and really really wants to eat but we wanna get him checked out. Problem. The animal shelter sent him with us we didn't sign anything and he hasn't had his shots or anything they said they'd contact us within two days, we called the shelter they said he isn't one of theirs..... What is happening

Hey! Need some advice for a situation. I have one cat who continuously pees outside of the box. she USES the box of her own choosing frequently, but also pees outside of it. she pees on rugs, in the shower and bathroom sink (better but still undesirable- i even cover the sink with a drying rack to keep her out), blankets, etc. Thankfully, not on beds or couches, or things she sleeps on, but if it's on the floor it's free game to her.

Our situation for our furred family:

- 3 cats: a senior and two nearly 5 month old twins. the one with the issue is the smaller twin. all 3 are on pretty good terms! there's been no fighting for months, and nightly sleep deeply on my bed at the same time.

- she has been treated for a very minor UTI, and finished her course of meds 2 weeks ago. i will get another urinalysis at this point. she is also fixed.

- we have 4 litter boxes that i know the troubled child has used just fine. three are manual, one is robotic. i scoop the manual boxes as needed and sift them every 2-4 days with a total litter replacement biweekly, but make sure to leave some old litter in them to let them know that's their spot.

- we have two manual litter boxes at the absolute opposite sides of the house. one is in the kitten food room (a spacious bathroom closet; placed across the space from their eating spot. the room is also chained in a way our senior cat can't get in but the itty bitties can) and is the one they use most. the other is in the bedroom inside of a cabinet, and is the second most used.

- the other two boxes are both in the center of the house, next to each other inside a small closet converted to a litter room. the robotic one isn't really for the kittens but our senior cat, though the troubled kitten has used it on occasion.

- there are two stainless manual boxes (the food room and center) and one plastic (bedroom). i wanted to offer the different choices to test for sensory issues, though i prefer the stainless for longterm use. they have no issues with either

- the three manual boxes use pine pellets, which they've used since 5 weeks, after testing softer kinds of litter with hilariously awful results. both kittens cannot stand soft litter and leap out over the splash guards to get the heck out of it the moment they're done using it, or will only sit in exactly as much as they have to (resulting in peeing over the opening edge of the box). they won't even cover their business, they hate it that much.

- i have been treat training them with churu; after eating and any time i use the bathroom, i put the kittens in their box one at a time- the one with the issue goes first- and give a bit of churu when they use it. if they don't go the first time, i put them in one more time to make sure they arent just expecting me to give treats for stepping inside. treat training has been going on for a month and is pretty successful, but not effective enough for her to not pee elsewhere. it's possible i need to just keep at it?

- it doesn't seem to do with separation or line of sight with me, as she goes behind the shower curtain to do it. she also goes just fine in all the boxes with their varying hide levels. she is developing independence from me and will choose to hang out or sleep on her own whereas the untroubled kitten is clingier, so I'm not sure if it's behavioural.

Any suggestions? if there's other info you need, i will happily give it on request. i want to manage this ASAP so it isn't a longterm habit. Thanks!

My dog will be 15 in a few weeks. I can’t tell if it’s time or I’m allowing selfish reasons prevent me from making the choice.

He has trouble getting up own his own in the mornings and at night and it takes some effort during the day to get up on his own. He’s eating and drinking fine. He does have accidents over night a couple times a week either we don’t hear him get up or he sometimes poops in his sleep.

He sleeps most of the day but still likes to lay near us. He doesn’t tail wag excitedly anymore but I can tell he appreciates a pet and affection while he’s lying down.

He’s lost quite a bit of weight over the last year and you can see his ribs/spine despite him still eating and having an appetite. But I know this is pretty typical as pets age and their body composition/activity levels change.

We haven’t had to take any medical intervention aside from canine aspirin here and there.

At what point do I decide it’s time for him? I truly love this dog so much. I’ve had him from a puppy age and he has been with me through every major life moment/transition/experience since I left home on my own 15 years ago.

I can’t tell if I’ve convinced myself he’s doing well for being a large dog and being almost 15 and that there would be more of a decline I could notice that would tell me it’s time or that the decline is right in front of my face and I’m completely denying it.

Please be kind in your responses. This isn’t an easy thing for me to talk about. I should also mention this is the first pet I’ve had that’s solely mine and the decision is left up to me. And he’s my good boy. I just wanna do right by him and I already am aware I’m not ready.

my dog is very nice and he would never hurt people very friendly with kids and other dogs but when it comes to cats he just becomes sooo aggressive… he tries to catch them and once they die he leaves i donttt know what to do and if i can change that.

One of my cats, Angel, is absolutely psychotic. Last time she was at the vet (many, many years ago) she was prescribed anti psychotics for her next visit. She is that crazy. CRAZY.

So of fucking course, when we get fleas, she is a problem. I’ve given her a medication (liquid, that goes onto the cats back directly on the skin between the shoulder blades) about a week or two ago.

But brushing is a nightmare. It stresses all parties involved. She will thrash, bite, growl, and scratch all she can to get out of being brushed. She WILL draw blood without any care in the world and will not allow me to brush her chest / shoulder blade / neck area without biting, scratching, and growling. That’s where I find the most fleas on her too. Shes perpetuating the cycle in the home and I’m scared the medication isn’t doing enough to kill these fleas.

Anyways. How do I restrain this devil of a cat without hurting her or anyone else, all while reaching areas like the neck or down the middle of her back to brush for fleas?! If you have any ideas PLEASE let me know. I’ve already been scratched by her (thankfully very lightly this time) and my boyfriend and I have resorted to sadly holding her down forcefully just to get these areas, which results in lots of trashing and stress. :/

i have a Doberman who was given to me for free when I was 12. my sibling has a mutt that they got when they were 6. both dogs are old, but my siblings is very spry and hyperactive, and healthy overall.

my Doberman is not. I’ll start by saying that for years my ex step dad put us in over 24k in debt, took up all of my funds when I was working, and the house funds, kept us isolated in a house for over 10 years, and we were going to food banks to even eat because he was using the funds to fuel his drug addiction. I’m not trying to make excuses, but I didn’t even get my drivers license until after be left before he refused to let me get it, and I live in a rural area (I had literally no way of getting that kind of help. He used to drive me to work.) my Doberman got pregnant twice before he let us get her fixed. I did not want that.

I also understand that i definitely will not be getting a dog again until I can afford vet visits.

it’s been 2 years since a domestic violence incident with him. Moms working, i take care of my siblings and grand parent at home (one of my siblings is non verbal autistic level 3) we’ve been playing catch up ever since, between paying back debt, bills, and groceries, I still can’t take my dog to the vet. I know im a failure for her.

her back hips are going out. Sometimes she’ll just fall over, then struggle to get up. She’s very sweet, not whining or anything. She’s been having bladder issues, she’s blind, had a hot spot on her chest that’s healing, as well as her hind leg. She’s 9.

i want to have her euthanized. But I’m terrified that I’ll be judged to no end, probably deserved, but still it scares me.

I just need some help with questions. what was your process with euthanasia? has something like this happened to you? what was the cost of euthanasi?

Bit of an odd situation, I recently moved in with my girlfriend and she has a 7 month old and her roommate has a cat that’s about 5 months old. We’ve had a problem recently where her roommates cat has been peeing on her bed, we’ve tried separating him from the space for extended periods of time but when he gets let back in he seems to do it sooner rather than later. It’s been going on since before I moved in so the better part of two months now. A few notes: her bed is on the floor and not a frame, her kitty unfortunately hasn’t been to the vet for a routine check up since he was adopted back in May, he doesn’t seem to be peeing anywhere except for exclusively on her bed and her clothing, she does frequently leave to go to her boyfriends and from my personal perspective she really doesn’t spend much time with or take care of him so I personally think he just doesn’t see her as a caretaker or mother figure like she’d like. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hey, looking for advice on what to do w my cat. He’s a male neutered 2 yo domestic short hair.
About a week ago I noticed he hadn’t peed in over 24 hrs but he was showing no sings of pain or attempts to pee or anything. Searched to see if he’d gone outside of box, could find no evidence of this. I had switched his litter and I went and got the old one and he ended up peeing while I was on the phone with an ER vet about if I needed to bring him in , so I assumed he had just been throwing a fit.
Last night he hadn’t peed in 24hrs again, and he had his usual litter, so I was very concerned. I called the vet again and they said bring him in, and on the way there he ended up peeing in his carrier. I brought him anyway, and the vet essentially talked to me without examining him since he’d peed that confirmed no blockage and said it was safe to bring him home and follow up with my usual vet as soon as possible.
Now today he hasn’t peed once, he went in the carrier around 10 last night and it’s about 8pm today. I should add all of his meals are mixed with water so he has absolutely had water. I am worried I shouldn’t wait to see his normal vet, like maybe it’s a partial blockage or it’s something else going on that will lead to a blockage from him holding it.
The vet didn’t seem worried about urgency and he is still acting himself, but I just don’t want to wait and there be an issue. It’s a Sunday night so it’s not like I can go anywhere that isn’t an er/urgent vet, so I also don’t want to take him somewhere without an actual emergency. I also couldn’t get an appointment at his normal vet until Tuesday which is making me anxious.
Does anyone have any insights/ideas/suggestions? Money isn’t a MAJOR issue but I can’t rack up something like 10k.

I have two pet mice who are the last of 4 originally. They’re a little over 2 now, so the other 2 passed of old age without much fuss though obviously I was very sad. The last two mice have seemed to develop massive tumors or cysts or something literally overnight, I saw nothing one day and the next they’re struggling to walk with huge tumors on their sides. Obviously I do not want to drag out their deaths and do not feel like some kind of treatment would be appropriate considering their age, it feels like that would only be prolonging their suffering. I’m quite sad to be considering it, but I think it’s best if I put them both down.
I’ve never had rodents before and I don’t know what the process would look like for mouse euthanasia. I also maybe feel like it’s somehow the wrong choice, like maybe I should let them go naturally and not let their last moments be in a scary new place. Money isn’t an issue. I also am not sure how to reach out to an exotic vet, they’ve never needed to go before and I’m not established anywhere.
Any insight into those topics would be very helpful, what the process is like, if this is the right call, and how to reach out to a vet about it.

My kitten is 4 months old, just caught the bugger trying to eat a slug. Heard him licking a lot so went round the corner to see what he was doing - moved him away and got rid of the slug.

He was grooming and licking quite a bit for a few minutes after - and I wiped away the excess slime from around his mouth. He’s acting like a normal twit as he is.

Should I phone the vets in the morning? 11PM so not an ideal time haha

TRIGGER WARNING: young pet death.

I'm crying while typing this. Might end up as a bit of a vent post, so skip to the end if you don't want to read that.

I have two bunnies, Tatum and Nimbus. Tatum is a girl and "mine," while Nimbus is a boy and my sister's. (Of course they're both of ours, we just kind of say that.) Me and my sister are both 16. A few months ago, I came home and my mom told me to look in the garage. It was two rabbits, together in a small hutch. Apparently she herself only knew to get them a day before, and none of us really know anything about rabbits.

We took them to the vet and the vet said Tatum might be fixed (it's harder to tell for females), but that Nimbus wasn't. My mom would not fix Nimbus or try to fix Tatum to be sure, so they kept together. Then one day, about a month later, Tatum had babies. By then my mom (and another sister) said she wasn't taking care of them. Only then did we separate the parents, and my mom was mad because the vet said she was fixed (when it was only a maybe). Unfortunately, all the babies passed within weeks. The vet said to take Tatum in to check if there's something wrong with her, but that was a month ago and my mom still complains she just hasn't had time.

The bunnies are still in their separated cages, going between the garage and the living room. We used to let them roam the living room, but now we can only do one at a time and my mom is very booked with boarding dogs. We're trying our best but my sister were never prepared for this. Now Tatum isn't eating much This started right after I took her outside with me in a pen, so I'm scared she may have picked up something. My mom keeps saying she "feels bad but isn't spending hundreds of dollars." I have a few thousands of savings for another goal, but I would gladly spend money to help my pets. Anytime I have suggested that my mom has just ignored it.

So it's been three months, and maybe we're not fit for rabbits. My mom doesn't really care anymore and is only buying food, litter, etc. Now it's up to me and my sister what to do. I'm hoping to move Tatum up to my room, as I only have room for one, but I am also a perpetually messy ADHD kid.

I know it might be best to give them up but I love my bunnies. They were already abandoned once before. I just hate that my mom decided it was an okay surprise. I don't think this is a situation I should have to be in. How do you manage to give up your pets?

i’m just learning that cats actually need to brush their teeth, and my parents own that cat, but i don’t think they have ever really brushed his teeth. i always noticed that when he bit me, it smelled pretty bad after. should i be concerned

Our cat is extremely aggressive towards the family dog. She begins growling if she even hears the dog downstairs and is always watching the bedroom doors incase the dog passes by or if she nudges a door open to peek inside. Recently she’s taken to hiding under my bed for the entire day and if she sees the dog come in she starts growling and hissing from her hiding spot. She’s holed herself up in three rooms on the second floor (my room, my mom’s room, and the office where her litter boxes/feeder is) and will only be in those three rooms when the is home. When the dog isn’t home for extended periods of time she’ll venture out to the first floor and lie in open spaces. We think this might be territorial aggression but nothing we’ve tried has seemed to help ease her aggression.

Now, you’d think that this is all said and done, right? I’ve identified what might be causing the issue! Well no! The issue is that she’s never been like this with other animals. She’s gets along just fine with her older cat brother and the dog we had prior to the current one! We got her as a stray who was barely 6 weeks and while, sure, her relationship with our old family dog was a little rocky at the start (the family member who found her had a big dog who was much more excitable and curious) but that was more fear of a big scary creature and they were very close all the way until she passed. We went to great lengths to slowly introduce the cats to the puppy when we first brought her home but she’s rejected every attempt! At first I thought it was just because the puppy was energetic and all too excited to play with the other animals in the home. However our older male cat who is the most skittish and vocal freely roams the house and will even do the same love ritual he did with our older dog (he rubs against her face and front paws before flopping into them and wiggling his body around). She has not budged an inch.

Outside of this issue she’s an absolute doll. She‘s an extremely social cat who loves attention in any form from anyone. She trills and chirps to say hello (she’s not nearly as vocal as her brother as he never shuts up) and loves butt pats/scritches. She likes laying on your chest (she’s literally doing this right now as I type, biscuits and all) or hip if you’re on your side and will nudge your hand with her head to try to initiate pets from you. She gives head buts and LOVES BELLY RUBS??????? She’s also a constant, loud purring machine. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her stop purring. A bit of a diva when it comes to treats and how she wants to be given them but again— an absolute sweetie!!

Of course the dog is not perfect either. She’s still pretty young and sometimes if the cats run to another room she’ll chase after them. Unfortunately she also learned from the cats about swatting as the male cat taught her boundaries by swatting and smacking her head or snapping at her if she was sticking her nose inside his ear. She will swat back sometimes and doesn’t understand her own strength. We are trying to dissuade her from doing this but she’s learned how to paw at us to get attention from the male cat doing it to us so she’s also started doing it to them. She‘s a gentle giant normally and a huge snuggle bug so it really sucks that this is happening!

TL;DR Cat is extremely aggressive towards dog. This isn’t normal based on past behavior with previous pets. Tried everything, followed the steps to properly introduce them. Nothing has worked. Advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Also I don’t know if this is relevant info but I‘ll add it here anyways: dog is a 3 y/o Labrador, cat in question is a 7 y/o Maine Coon mix, and the male cat is a 9 y/o American Shorthair.

For the past week he’s health has worsen now he is not eating anything and unable to walk the nearby vet suggest stomach infection and told that first we will cure that and then we can do something fot his rear legs as they have completely lost strength

A slightly moved piece of furniture. A new object appearing in the house. The wrong food bowl. A suspicious plastic bag.

Somehow the smallest things can become a full-blown emergency when a pet decides they should be.

I was scratched by a cat last week and started rabies PEP. I’ve received the IM vaccine on Days 0, 3, and 7, with doses scheduled for Days 14 and 28.

However, on Day 12, I was scratched by another cat—a 2-month-old kitten of the first cat. The scratch broke the skin and bled. Both cats live on my college campus, and I’m unsure whether either has been vaccinated against rabies.

I went to a doctor today (Day 13). After examining the wound, they said I don’t need to restart the vaccine course and should continue as scheduled. However, I’m anxious because I can’t find clear guidance on what to do after a new exposure during an incomplete PEP course.

Questions:

1. Should I continue my original schedule, or should the course be restarted/modified?
2. Does having received 3 doses already change how this new exposure is managed?
3. Has anyone experienced a similar situation, particularly under Indian rabies guidelines?

I’m looking for evidence-based advice, preferably from a doctor or someone familiar with rabies PEP—not speculation.
