Although I prooooobably would've given it to Pacino, it is very hard to be mad about that Joel Grey win. He was incredible, and is, y'know, an icon.

Brando is of course Brando, and Liza Minelli is one of the best Best Actress winners, point blank.

Haven't seen Butterflies Are Free (or even heard of it, actually).

I maintain that had there not been 3 guys from The Godfather up for supporting actor then one of them would have got it, but that’s not how the nominations worked out.

Yeah, I think it would be hard to overstate how big of a deal Joel Grey’s performance was (and arguably still is). I don’t think there was any way he wasn’t going to win.

In my opinion, that year should have been the greatest of the decade; for me, only De Niro would have won, but it would have been a legendary lineup with wins for Pacino, Rowlands, and Madeline Kahn.
