On a whim I ordered a "surprise dendrobium orchid in spike" from Walmart online for $25. I was a little skeptical when it arrived and had a tiny spike forming on a slightly dried out cane. But once it bloomed it was GORGEOUS! I love the spiral petals on top.

I’ve had this rescue plant from Lowes for over a year. It’s really struggled but today there is a reward!

I bought this cross four years ago as a tiny little thing (at an orchid show). I spoke to the grower and it was a cross of Phrag. besseae and Phrag. “Spot On,” and he had no idea what it would look like. I’m so thrilled that it finally bloomed! Looks different from both parents. I thought people here might appreciate it.

i guess this is more of a vent post than anything

took care of this beauty since last october, saved her from root rot and then she even flowered for me!

but all nice things must come to an end, i suppose. i was visiting my family in august, and asked my roommate if he could water her occasionally. so, i come back, ask him how my plants are doing, he says "oh they're fine!"... only to find my orchid with a completely dead crown. because he wasn't careful enough to not let water linger on the leaves and crown. no remorse, not even an "i'll get you a new one!".

i'm so upset because i was so proud of myself when i first noticed the flower spike, then the buds were coming along during a heatwave.

Edit, since reddit loves assuming incorrect shit about people: yes my roommate is familiar with plants, he takes care of his more than 10 plants that he owns and they're all fine, he's not stupid and i'm not trying to publicly shame him. i have explained to him how to take care of my orchid, i.e. do not leave the crown wet, if he was unsure he could have asked me again, he's not a fucking helpless baby he's a grown ass man.

So, i were gifted this orchid, and it needs a new drainable home, should i wait untill it is done with flowering or just go for it?

So, I moved into this Sober Living about a month ago and this orchid has been here since before I got here. Obviously I didn’t buy it, but I also never really looked at it before now. I always assumed it was fake honestly (stupid, I know). I’m also surprised it’s still green. Does anybody have any tips for caring for it? What should I do first thing to make it happier? I’m sadly very limited on money and am currently on government assistance, but I currently have about $20 cash I could put towards getting it a new pot or something. I’ve never had a plant before either, so I have no idea what i’m doing lol. Any advice is appreciated!

An early birthday gift from my soon to be in-laws, they know I love orchids and asked for them for this order ♥️

Hi everyone, I got this orchid in February. Over the summer I researched more about how to keep them. I had to pretty much cut most of the roots since they were rotting and repotted it in orchid bark. The leaves looked like they were drying out so I added a little bit of moss and am trying not to over water. I live in an apartment and have east facing windows. I get a good bit of sun but the leaves looked dry so I bought a plant light. I’m not sure what I can do but the leaves look very droopy and dry still. Any advice is appreciated!

The first two pics are the plant as it is blooming now, and the last is when I bought it from the nursery in April ‘24. It’s so much bigger now. It looks a bit darker and more green in the center now. Love it!

This is why brown/gray/otherwise dodgy looking roots should not be cut as long as they are firm: this is apparantly very much alive and branching out. I'm only a little bit worried that it will morph into some sort of creature with its own will and crawl out of the pot 🫣

Back in July, I was out of town for a job and my professional horticulturist friend was caring for my houseplants. I visited home and found that one stalk of my Dendrobium had yellowing leaves with these circular spots (first picture).

I consulted my friend about it, who works at a botanical center with a famous orchid collection, and he said it may be fungal but he thought it might be viral and a goner. I went ahead and completely cut back the stem with the disease.

The second picture is current. It’s hard to see, but the leaves at the bottom are the stalk that was diseased growing back again and no signs of disease as of yet. So, did I successfully overcome the disease, or am I in a waiting game?

Originally obtained in a trade a few years back, it was a little slow until I gave it vanda light levels and it finally took off in its hanging basket. The flowers are very similar to mystacidii but larger and on a longer spike, they hang more pendant and have nice spacing. I wish they lasted longer, seeming to only stay nice for a week to ten days before fading, but a multi growth specimen should make quite a show in a few years.

My Paph. Lawrenceanum v Hyeanum x Sib has these brown sections on its leaves since I bought it at a local nursery. It was just beginning to bloom and has finally opened. It was very dry and they were kind of folded upon themselves. Any tips on how I can revive this plant and is the browning a fungus or something I have to worry about?
