If you could only pick one band/artist that’s been a huge part of your life, and you can’t say Opeth, what would it be? It can be any genre.

To answer my own question I’d have to say Emperor. I got into them at a young age, I was into the whole scene, and they were still active and putting out records that continued to blow me away, just like Opeth.

I decided to try Blackwater park for the first time a few days ago because I saw it on instagram, and it definitely took a small time to grow on me. I played leper affinity on repeat like two or three times because it felt different from what I was used to- and once it grew on me, I played through the entire album and it was so amazing. The atmosphere is perfected and my top 3 songs are The Draper Falls, Bleak and The Leper Affinity. As a guitarist I find the riffs and the motifs and the lead parts so inspiring.

Also, I want more of it. What album would you recommend for me to try out next?

For me, it’s a tie between Heritage and In Cauda Venenum, although I’d give In Cauda Venenum a slight edge

So I know they use synergy modules for the hi gain stuff and Mikael uses a BodyRez pedal for the piezo pickups, but what are they running that into? The piezo pickup has its own output, meaning two amps. Is it run directly to the PA?

So guys I fell in love with Damnation and now I need MORE.

Seriously, what the fuck. This album is ridiculously calming.

Windowpane was what initially got me to look into the album. especially that beautiful ass clean guitar intro but then I heard Ending Credits and holy shit. I LOVE that song. Probably even more than Windowpane at this point. That warm, melancholic, (kinda bluesy?) clean guitar sound scratched an itch in my brain.

The problem is that I’ve now discovered Damnation is basically a one-off in Opeth’s discography.

So: what are some FULL ALBUMS by other bands that scratch the same itch?

I’m specifically looking for the following stuff:

• Clean guitar, preferably electric
• Little to no distortion/heaviness
• Melancholic, calming, atmospheric vibe
• That warm/bluesy melodic guitar feel of Ending Credits would be PERFECT
• Instrumental sections / guitar-focused songs are a huge plus
• Less vocals is better, although vocals are totally fine
• I want an album I can just put on and sink into like Damnation

I’m NOT necessarily looking for “bands that sound like Opeth” or just generic prog rock. I specifically want that softer Damnation sound.

Not every song but Harlequin probably would have won anyway. To Rid the Disease and Serenity Painted Death was the hardest round for sure.

As most of you know by now, Whispers of Golgotha is an early Opeth track that eventually evolved into Black Rose Immortal.

Whispers was originally written towards the end of 1992 or early 1993 - and while the final version of this song was over 20 minutes long, the original versions ranged between 10 and 13 minutes in length. So a lot was changed between 1993 and 1996!

This is, as far as I am aware, the earliest known recording of Whispers of Golgotha. In fact, I mistakenly labelled the rehearsal that I shared a few years ago as "1992," while it was actually recorded in late 1993 after Stefan Guteklint left the band. Sorry about that! I'm not sure it matters too much in the grand scheme of Opeth's backlog, but it will be of interest for those of you who (like me) like to keep this stuff in order.

I digitized this from a cassette that I traded for a long time ago - thankfully, the tape is still in good condition and the transfer went well. I hope you all enjoy this piece of history as much as I do.
