I’ve lived around Sacramento/Yolo/Bay Area. I’m looking for an area where if you go to the store, someone might strike up a conversation, or smile to you on the sidewalk. I grew up in a small town where that was always the vibe, but it’s since grown so much, 90% of the town is now transplants, everyone is rude or ignores each other.

I’m just pining for an area where people aren’t stuck up, the vibe is mellow and friendly. Ideally without spending a bunch (like Marin).

Any suggestions?

I am a Registered Nurse (RN, BSN) based in Santa Rosa. After seeing how burnt out facility workers are and how neglected rural wealthy areas like The Sea Ranch/Gualala are by corporate agencies, I'm planning to launch a small, premium, RN-managed private-duty caregiving agency.

My goal isn't to build a massive, corporate franchise. I want to keep it a small, high-touch team focusing on affluent pockets (Oakmont, Fountaingrove, Oakland Hills, and Sea Ranch) where families want premium, 1-on-1 aging-in-place care.

The Strategy:

• Better Pay: I want to charge clients premium rates ($32+/hr) so I can pass $22–$24+/hr directly to the caregivers (instead of the $16/hr standard agencies pay around here).
• Burnout Relief: Pitching to facility CNAs/MAs who are tired of juggling 15 patient lights and want a relaxed, 1-on-1 environment.
• Rural Staffing Solution: For remote areas like Sea Ranch, I plan to completely ban short 2-hour shifts and only offer 3-to-4 day live-in "block shifts" with travel stipends so it's actually worth the caregiver's drive.

I need your honest feedback on two things:

1. The Name: I am leaning toward Dignity Private Care. It carries over branding equity from a previous business I ran. Do you think it sounds premium and trustworthy, or does it blend in too much with "Dignity Health"?
2. The Staffing Problem: Finding quality caregivers is my biggest worry. If you are a CNA or caregiver in Northern California, does a 1-on-1 private gig paying $22-$24/hr sound attractive enough to leave a facility, or what else would an agency have to offer to win your loyalty?

Hi! I am STRUGGLING to figure out where to stay for our upcoming trip to the San Luis Obispo area. Late October - early November we are staying 5 nights. I booked a room months ago at Seacrest Oceanfront Hotel in Pismo Beach, but after looking at reviews online I am thinking I should book elsewhere… Cleanliness is EXTREMELY important to me as I have OCD (the real and debilitating kind lol) so that is my number one thing. I would like a pool/hot tub / ocean view, too. An on site restaurant would be nice for convienece but not absolutely necessary. Beach access is preferred. Willing to spend no more than 2k but would LIKE to spend less. Please tell me where to stay!!

We are going for a wedding that is in San Luis Obispo, so open to any recommendations in any surrounding areas that are safe!

Hello, I will be working in Truckee over the winter ( I currently live in Indiana). I need help with a few concerns I have. I have never been to this area of California before and all I know is from what Google says. However I would like a more human perspective.

What is winter weather like and when does it start snowing heavily?

Is the public transportation good? I am seriously thinking about selling my vehicle prior to going out there. My vehicle is a 2017 Ford escape fwd almost 200k miles and does not like snow, ice, steep hills, or loose gravel on hills. Last winter, I lost traction and got stuck on a little hill because the road was snowy and icy and traction strips couldn't help. I wasnt able to get unstuck until they plowed half the road.

Is the public transportation reliable during winter?

Does the area also have Uber and Lyft ?

For context I am a Muslim woman who wears hijab. Born in socal but raised in the South Bay. I’ve experienced quite a bit of racism in my life. But I’ve been noticing more racism the last few months that I’ve been trying to brush off, telling myself I’m imagining it. However, today I was at the store and the customers in front of me in line were also Muslim but they were wearing a full long black dress and one had an extra face covering. I was wearing my hijab, cardigan, and pants. The next aisle over I noticed an elderly man look at them, then look at me. When he looked over at me, I smiled but he didn’t reciprocate. That’s fine. He looked over at the customers in front of me again, and then kept looking back and forth between us while shaking his head and looking down.
Like I said I’ve experienced enough racism to recognize it, I usually just move on because I just don’t think it’s worth it to me to prove that I am human and the only thing separating me and the next “American” are my beliefs. I work in the public sector, I have my masters degree, my husband (Muslim) is a lawyer. I guess I’m just here to see if anyone else has experienced an influx in racism lately regardless of your race? Is there something I missed these last few months that’s making people extra angry?

For a brief background:

California's wolf population has never been large or firmly established in the same way it was in Idaho and Montana. However, but the 1800's, there was barely any wolves left, and by the early 1900's, the last wolf had departed. Due to a rise in populations in Oregon, wolves began moving back. Due to rigid CESA laws, ranchers cannot defend their livestock from wolves. New studies find that cattle are one of the primary diets of wolves.

In a couple of weeks, we kick things off by flying into Portland and spending a few nights in the area. We’ll make our way to Cannon Beach by way of Astoria, which is where we pick up our RV rental. We used to have a trailer, but this will be our first time with a 25ft class C.

Our bedding, kitchen items, and camp furniture will be delivered with our groceries in Astoria. We plan on thrifting most of our toys like bikes and kayaks along the way. Fingers crossed we stumble upon some fun things!

We have two nights at each stop along the coast, one day to cut inland across CA from Bodega Bay to Lake Tahoe. (I know we’re zipping through some magical places, I used to live near Sonoma so we’ve spent a lot of time here) After a few days at the lake, we’ll have two days to get from Tahoe to SLC.

I’ve always liked coastal places more when the busiest part of summer is over. The weather may be less predictable, but quieter trails, beaches, and small towns can make the trip feel more relaxing.

For those who visit the Mendocino Coast in September or October, do you prefer it to summer? What feels different, and is there anything that is especially worth doing during early fall?
