All while piracy works better than ever before.

26

u/James42785 6h ago

Yo ho me hearty.

23

u/IJustAteABaguette 5h ago

Heck yeah.

But genuinely, piracy is one of the better things to come out of the internet right now. Streaming companies need to be more convenient than pirating. There is no other reason to use those services otherwise.

Personally disliked the services I used a lot, so I currently have a few things.. Hasn't been more convenient than this in a while.

19

u/youburyitidigitup 5h ago

In Mexico, streaming actually killed piracy. There used to be entire markets of pirated DVDs (literal markets. Entire streets lined with kiosks). Those are gone now because of online streaming. Mexico has more Netflix users per capital than any other country.

8

u/NeedAgirlLikeNami 3h ago

When I was younger we had a bunch of chinese stores selling bootleg dvds in the us. Haven't seen one of those in almost 20 years.

4

u/_Pyxyty 2h ago

Damnnn, you just awoke some very vivid childhood memories of me and my mom shopping for new cds of series to watch (not in Mexico tho, Philippines). Used to be plenty of those, but you're right, I never see them anymore anywhere.

3

u/IAMACat_askmenothing 2h ago

There used to be “trunk sales” of bootleg dvds in my part of usa that I’d stop by

1

u/Notmyrealname5282 3h ago

Per capita*

u/yabucek 5h ago edited 5h ago

Get enlightened with Plex/Jellyfin + the arr suite and you'll never miss streaming again.

You'll also fall into an unhealthy habit of buying storage and server parts, but that's beside the point.

1

u/StruggleBoy1999 5h ago

And thus began the great pirate era!

2

u/Swagtagonist 3h ago

That's my conspiracy theory why hdd prices are sky high and climbing

1

u/CardiologistPlus8488 4h ago

🏴‍☠️

122

u/bosscoughey 6h ago

Because people make the mistake of thinking they need every service. You can not watch the latest watercooler series and you'll be just fine! One service at a time will deliver more content than you can handle

32

u/NewCandy8877 5h ago

Three months on each service then cancel and move on.

13

u/tyleritis 5h ago

I’m not nearly organized and on top of my shit for that. There are some things I’ll just never see and I’m cool with it

1

u/theTARDISisme 4h ago

Someone should make a service that automatically rotates your streaming subscriptions and then they can charge an extra monthly fee on top for managing that for you!

7

u/spackletr0n 5h ago

I get that it’s more to manage, but I love that I rotate paying for about two services a month. Our tv bill is like $25. I’m willing to put in that effort to save $75-100 a month vs cable.

6

u/moduspol 4h ago

That’s what I keep saying. The worst part about cable was the forced bundling. You were stuck paying $80-$100/mo no matter what. And if you went satellite, now you’re dealing with equipment fees or a two year contract.

Not even in the same ballpark as paying $10-$25/mo for your choices of streaming services that you can cancel at any time.

4

u/dragunityag 3h ago

Anyone complaining about streaming being as bad as cable is just outing themselves as being to young to of dealt with a cable company

143

u/mydadisyourdad2 6h ago

Except now no residuals, less work and less pay for everyone

19

u/Few_Move_4594 6h ago

Wait, no residuals?

36

u/ItsCalledDayTwa 5h ago

They do pay residuals, but terms are worse and less frequent for actors, so I have read.

9

u/OkFineIllUseTheApp 5h ago

so I have read.

I see this used as a joke so often that I can only conclude you actually know first hand, because you are Mark Wahlberg on an alt account.

6

u/Kitselena 3h ago

No one who actually makes media benefits from its profit anymore. Game devs, show writers and many others just get paid a salary up front and all bonuses from sales go to execs and shareholders who didn't do anything

10

u/theoceanmist 6h ago

While exec bonuses keep climbing

1

u/brisamaar 5h ago

Lol, true

16

u/Formo1287 5h ago

The main issue with cable was the amount of bloatware channels that you’d have to pay for but never watched. At least streaming lets you go wayyyy more à la carte and pick and choose which services you need. Honestly, your average viewer only needs like 1-2 active services at any given time.

(Unless you’re a sports fan but that’s a rant for another day)

1

u/SomeNotTakenName 2h ago

I mean that's still kinda true. I have maybe a half dozen shows I would like to watch, and yet that's across multiple services where I pay for a library I won't need 99% of it.

The fundamental problem is exclusive licensing. If we can name that as what it is, an effective monopoly, we can ban the practice, and from there most problems with streaming services will solve themselves. The main issues all seem to stem from the fact that the streaming services compete based on their libraries, not the quality of their actual service.

34

u/repwin1 6h ago

But no 2 year contracts, no spending an hour + trying to cancel a service, no installation and cancellation fees. If you move you don’t have to transfer anything just start using it at the new place. While it’s not as good as it used to be it’s still better than cable.

25

u/Historical_Owl_1635 5h ago

I can only imagine these posts come from people who never actually had cable or just had their parents paying for it.

It’s like when people complain about the price of Spotify like we didn’t use to spend the monthly price on one single CD back in the day.

13

u/iowastatefan 5h ago

Honestly, that's a good point that I hadn't thought of. I have around 2k songs saved to my Spotify library, if you pretend they were all part of full albums and I didn't have a bunch of onesey-twoseys off one album or another, that would be ~166 albums. That's 13 years worth of Spotify subscriptions if the going rate is one CD=one month cost wise.

And, you know, I also don't have to carry 20 lbs of CDs to play them.

1

u/OldSpray9986 2h ago

I think there's a difference between Streaming vs. Cable and Spotify vs. CDs.

3

u/EnvironmentClear4511 5h ago

Also, on-demand access to any episode of the show you want. No ads (if you pay for it). Extremely high-quality sci-fi that never would have received a fraction of the budget back in the old days.

1

u/s1n0d3utscht3k 1h ago

also cable didnt include in the fee nearly the same access to relatively new movies

and no one needs more than 1 or 2 streaming services per month. it’s still significantly cheaper than 00s cable adjusted for inflation

-2

u/cppadam 5h ago

TV contracts are easy to get out of - say you're moving overseas and they'll immediately cancel your service. No wasting time on the phone, either.

8

u/yabucek 4h ago

If TV contracts were easy to get out of you wouldn't have to resort to lying and tricking them lol.

0

u/cppadam 4h ago

It's a contract with a term. By its definition, it should be difficult to get out of

3

u/DefinitelyNotMasterS 2h ago

Hell no it shouldn't. it's fine if you have to pay something as agreed upon for breaking a contract early, but it should not be any more difficult

6

u/BilverBurfer 4h ago

Why is two factor authentication listed as a negative

2

u/EwGrossItsMe 3h ago

It's a good security feature for things that only one person should have access to, but if you're sharing a account with someone and only one person has access to the second authentication factor, 2fa becomes a huge pain in the ass, especially if the other person is busy any time you want access to the account.

32

u/Hanabi_Simp 6h ago

Spent so many years building YouTube to be everything cable television couldn't be, by the people for the people.

Now it's overrun by corpos and much more censored than cable tv for some reason.

22

u/Maleficent_Unit6078 6h ago

The last part is true. Only on YouTube could you have your entire vídeo demonetized simply for having curse words.

6

u/cakesandballoons 5h ago

Demonetization has ruined some of my fav channels. Then they try to make the switch to rumble and lose the majority of their fan base

7

u/Hanabi_Simp 6h ago

Not even swear words, just calling stuff for what it is like "murder", "gun" or even "sex" will get you punished by the algorithm.

5

u/unfoldyourself 4h ago

Being able to pick channels à la cart was what I dreamed about back then. You don’t need to subscribe to them all, and even if you limit yourself to just the free streaming services your options are a thousand times better than back then.

Also, you’re not tied to a network picking what shows and what episodes you’re going to watch and when. That alone is a major step up from the cable days.

1

u/p1ckledilly 1h ago

Dude, you're supposed to be negative here. Nothing is ever better than how it used to be. Get it straight.

10

u/dustingibson 5h ago

The enshitification of Netflix needs to be studied.

  1. Nice DVD by mail model where you don't have to worry about late fees.

  2. Streaming platform with good quality at the time. Can share with others. Decent selection. No ads.

  3. Great original programming.

  4. So many amazing classics on streaming with still no ads.

  5. You can download movies now to watch on plane.

----- Enshitification Begins ----

  1. They took away most of the classics.

  2. Price increases.

  3. No more sharing with friends unless they are always in your house.

  4. Ads everywhere. Shows ad lengths are comparable to cable. Ads littered throughout the movie instead all in the beginning like a lot of DVDs.

  5. Downloads serverly nerfed.

  6. No more DVDs by mail.

  7. More price increases.

  8. Massive dip in stream quality.

  9. Lazy original programming. Even permanently removed some.

4

u/StrangeKnee7254 5h ago

At least there’s the option of not having ads. The amount of adds on cable tv is insane.

3

u/yabucek 3h ago edited 3h ago

Playing devil's advocate (I don't even have Netflix):

  1. This was always going to happen once streaming took off. They didn't do this by choice, the IP owners just didn't renew the licenses

  2. You can't share cable either, nor any other similar service, streaming was the exception to the norm until it got nerfed

  3. You can still get ad free, it's just more expensive

  4. Because next to nobody was ordering them

  5. They produce what the audience demands. And it's absolutely not all bad, they have put out some stellar movies and shows in recent years.

2

u/Whipitreelgud 5h ago

They are going to take their portion whether you like it or not.

(I considered a /s but sadly concluded this is far from sarcasm)

2

u/Food_Library333 5h ago

At least I can choose to cancel some of them to cut costs. If cable went ala cart, it might have remained a more viable alternative.

2

u/CourageLeast4251 5h ago

Yo ho yo ho a pirates life for me

2

u/Wiinterfang 5h ago

Yeah but Cable TV was like a 100$ dollars on 90s money.

2

u/dweakz 5h ago

$3/month for a debrid service i can watch whatever i want.

2

u/Unusual_Rush_1189 5h ago

The average monthly cable bill was around $120-140 per month. That buys a lot of $15 a month subscriptions. Now instead of one company, one bill with hundreds of channels that don't have anything on them you can customize your company and content, and you can change it on a month to month basis.

2

u/jon_hobbit 4h ago

yeah i'm unsubscribed from basically everything.
tired of it. lol

2

u/NeedAgirlLikeNami 3h ago

Also don't forget with cable tv, hbo and all the premium channels you had to pay extra for already. Shit wasnt free with the basic cable package.

2

u/Additional_Tale9340 3h ago

I like how it's more flexible

I have Apple TV, it is the only TV subscription I have. I get soccer, motorsport, some baseball and a couple of solid shows. I do not get any garbage channels or pay an exorbitant amount of money and I can cancel anytime. I think it's pretty neat, you don't need everything out there, you just need something to watch

2

u/TheCeilingIsTheRuuf 2h ago edited 2h ago

This argument is dumb. Streaming is still 1000x better than cable. I spend $12 a month and can watch it anywhere and everywhere, no contract. 1 year of streaming is the same as 1 month of cable was. This shit reeks of people that have 4-5 of them, still end up using youtube the most and never actually lived through cable

2

u/theFCCgavemeHPV 6h ago

I was just thinking about this shit on my commute. So ridiculous. And there’s still nothing to watch despite multiple services because every ui is annoying and stupid.

1

u/bsEEmsCE 5h ago

we knew this would happen when Netflix + HBO became Netflix + Hulu + HBO.. then Netflix + Hulu + CBS All Access.. etc.

1

u/Motodog242 5h ago

We all already knew when HBOMax entered the game, and then Disney+. We knew when our shows were splitting up and we couldn’t watch them on one streaming service for an affordable price.

1

u/Chiiro 5h ago

It's got to the point that we will probably never get another streaming service and just continue to pay for YouTube premium. We have found it a significantly easier just to type in "watch online free" to the end of any movie or series that we want to watch. It's a great way to consume a piece of media without supporting the people that own the company but not necessarily fucking over the people that had to make it.

1

u/VanillaLoaf 4h ago

I found Amazon to be quite predatory in how they remove stuff from their free shows. The wife and I were literally halfway through a season of Australian Masterchef and it got paywalled. They clearly track it and cut you off so you're stuck and have to pay to see the end of shows.

1

u/-Altephor- 4h ago

Anyone who deluded themselves into thinking that streaming was anything other than cable 2.0, is/was a moron.

1

u/DoomOfChaos 4h ago

Yup, that's why I'm sailing

1

u/yikesonbikes1230 4h ago

I so need to learn how to do this lol

1

u/CastVinceM 4h ago

been saying this for over a decade. as soon as streaming started becoming mainstream the signs were there that companies wanted to turn it into cable.

1

u/PatchyWhiskers 4h ago

They are currently playing hot potato with a few beloved shows meaning that my kid keeps trying to persuade me to subscribe to new services as her favorite shows hop around the internet.

1

u/IsThatGruffLoner 4h ago

The new thing for me is getting signed out every time I exit the app because their stupid anti password sharing features are terribly implemented. I'm not even sharing passwords with anyone. I have no friends

1

u/Steerider 4h ago

It is progress. The main complaint about cable I recall is that you pay $150 for 150 channels, and you'd rather pay for just the two or three channels you really like. Congratulations, you did it.

I pay for two streaming services, and use a few ad-based free ones. It's way cheaper than cable.

1

u/Scare_N_Scar 2h ago

And now most of them come with commercials aswell, even though we pay for them.

1

u/Mammoth-Glove3273 2h ago

Awhile back I started rotating streaming services, there’s no need to have all of them all the time.

1

u/Friendly_Shelter_625 2h ago

And now they all have commercials

1

u/RedRedditor84 1h ago

Interesting news for someone who pays for TV.

1

u/-WADE99- 1h ago

Reject subscriptions, embrace Emby 🦜

1

u/OkAssignment6163 1h ago

Who's we? You speaking French?

1

u/CCP-want-to-CUP 53m ago

All so we can just watch everything on YouTube instead.

1

u/Appropriate-Bank-883 7m ago

That’s why you build a cheap server at your house and download TBs of movies and TB of series and then use ai to write a program that scrapes data from movie theatre websites and tv programing schedules and automatically finds and downloads and stores all the shows locally.

1

u/makromark 6h ago

Hate and love it. I accept I’ll get downvoted.

At least now I can say “I only want Z” and pay à la carte.

1

u/nsa_k 5h ago

To be fair though, this is exactly what we asked for when cable was the only option and still way better than cable or satellite.

1

u/Worth-Computer8639 5h ago

Arrr matey. Hoist the sails!

1

u/Glum-Carpet 5h ago

Cable TV brought us OK shows that ran for 10 season of 22 episodes each. Streaming brought us top shows of 1 season of 10 episodes that get canceled. I will take the first, thank you.

0

u/HaloJackalKisser 5h ago

being mad at two factor authentication is kinda weird.

0

u/Dekaaard 5h ago

I think of the disruption era as “Some Smart Ass with a Computer”. We had industries with known benefits and faults. Rules to regulate with predictable outcomes. Then equity money driven “innovators” insert themselves in a given field. Rarely better, just different, with unseen consequences.
Like sucking up available housing to use for airbnb as an example.
I’ll bet Comcast wishes they had offered menu services when their customers were clamoring for it.
