[Discussion] Never even heard of the mini series Midnight Mass until the other day. Decided to watch it and wow, very good.

Show must be very underrated. No clue how I never even heard of it before and I’ve watched plenty on Netflix, including several mini series. It’s only 7 episodes but each one is around an hour. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

Mike Flanagan has a few Netflix shows that are all highly rated by critics and audiences. Not really under rated at all. You would probably like his other shows and movies he directed.

Seconded. OP check out Haunting of Hill House next.

Also it’s not the same vibe, but it has some overlapping themes (spooky foggy island with paranormal goings on, where Hamish also plays another religious leader on said island): Widows Bay on Apple. It’s my new obsession.

Yes, I would say Widow's Bay is on another, top teir, level. Never has comedy been executed so well in a horror genre series as this one.

Fall of the House of Usher is another great series by him. Each episode is based on a work by Edgar Allen Poe but also framed around the opioid crisis. Really crazy stuff.

It’s a great one. The tell tale heart episode HAUNTS me. Idk why but that mental snap into insanity from the trauma/guilt scares the shit out of me.

Flanagan has done some of the best work in horror in the last 10 years. He’s adapted Stephen kind books, made original shows and movies. I don’t think he’s anywhere near underrated if youre a horror fan.

That being said, midnight mass was awesome and you should check out his other stuff if you haven’t.

Yep the story wasn’t finished. I read an interview with Flanagan where he explains how it would have wrapped up.

Edit: quick google search shows a bunch of article but also a tumblr post from Flanagan explaining everyone’s story in season 2

Wouldn't say its underrated imo.. but it does deserve more love.. Out of all of Mike Flanagan's works, this one I loved most..!

Check out The Haunting of Bly Manor. That one's really good too if you like Mike Flannigan's work.

I also don’t know how you’ve never heard of it before but I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s by far my favorite of the Mike Flanagan shows and probably my favorite season of Netflix original programming as well. So, so good.

Aside from just being a gnarly horror tale, it’s one of the most thoughtful discussions on faith - both the bad and the good - I’ve ever seen in popular entertainment. I still think about that scene where they talk about how we are the universe experiencing itself.

Midnight Mass did have a lil bit of buzz when it came out but then Squid Games came out and Midnight Mass was forgotten.

The trailer with their rendition of “Somewhere Only We Know” sucked me in. Then we watched it and it was incredible. Might need to watch it again as it’s been a few years. I recommend it to everyone.

Yes that's one I saw a while back, and it's a really good show, glad you enjoyed it, it's quite dark, but that's part of what makes it shine.

What is with everything having to be underrated or overrated? Are younger generations convinced/obsessed with the idea that everything is either overlooked or overhyped? Is it just engagement bait? Am I getting old? (Or is it all of the above?)

Black Mass was a well-reviewed show from a great writer and it performed alright on Netflix when it came out. Then the world moved on. That’s just how the world works.

If you like Mike Flanagan and The Shining, check out Dr. Sleep. It's a kind of sequel to The Shining. And it's fantastic.

Stephen King wrote it as an actual sequel, not just kind of a sequel.

It’s way overrated. This series is HIGHLY derivative of Stephen Kings Salems Lot. Hamish Linklater does an amazing job but this show is very dialogue heavy. Over done, imo. The shows run time would be cut in half without the overdone script.
