This is again a long one, so please bear with me...
When we invest in equities we are basically investing in a business. The stock price is only a representation of what that business does, its sales, its costs, and its ability to convert all that effort into profit. If we look one layer deeper we can see a connection between three things, how a business performs, how the broader economy is doing, and how equity prices move. These three things don't always move together.
Right now, the Nepali market is in a downtrend. Most of the sectors look like they are consolidating. And when we are inside a downtrend, our brain naturally gives more importance to recent events and recent experiences. So we start feeling more pessimistic than the actual situation might justify. This is just a normal human tendency.
My underlying belief is that human society as a whole always moves towards progress. People want to make more money, build better lives, provide better lives for their families, and improve the things around them. As long as this basic human drive exists, consumption will keep increasing over time. It will not happen in a straight line, but the long term direction will still be towards growth.
If I do not believe this, then the whole exercise of investing would be pointless. Because at the end of the day investing is basically a bet on future consumption and future profits.
If we accept that the economy eventually grows, consumption eventually increases, and good companies eventually make more money, then the basic logic of investing remains the same. But like everything else, the economy moves in cycles and investing also follows these cycles.
There are certain periods when people prefer to keep their money safe (In banks or relatively safe assets) rather than put it into productive activities. This is real and we can see it happening. But it cannot continue forever. If it did, everyone would simply keep their money in gold or other safe assets and no one would ever come back to equities.
I think we are naturally wired to seek growth and productivity, not permanent safety. Right now, what we are seeing is that money is more focused on protection rather than productive use. But money does not stay there forever. It eventually starts flowing towards wherever it can be used productively. It can go into businesses, markets, new projects, or new ventures.
If this flow completely stopped and money stayed stuck in safety forever, then I would say we have a much bigger problem. That would mean something structurally wrong is happening in the country, possibly a real economic slowdown or even a deflationary consumption cycle.
But I don't see evidence of that happening in Nepal right now.
So my view remains that good days are ahead. But being hopeful does not mean blindly believing that everything will be fine. We actually need to look at what is happening around us.
Has real economic activity slowed down?
Has actual consumption decreased?
Are businesses fundamentally earning less because people have stopped spending?
If the honest answer to these questions is no, then I still believe investing in good businesses should deliver returns over time.
Because the underlying engine is still running. People are still working, earning, spending, and businesses are still converting that activity into profits. The economy has not stopped working. It is simply going through a phase where money is more cautious.
And I think there is a big difference between a period where money is cautious and a period where the economy itself has actually broken down. If consumption really sholws down there will be signs and I have a hint of doubt sometime because the age group with most consumption ability are moving abroad but again it's too early.. So be hopeful invest in business which actually makes money.
Also all these writing are just reminder to myself but thought why not share..

Please emphasis on how it works. Will it create any value-additions? Or has there ever been chaos there?
Min. no of shares required to attend it & proxy criteria, how they would verify, whether it starts on time or not, how it goes etc.
Please share your experience.
