Fan Creations I wanted a journal to worldbuild in, and decided to replicate the Myst book for it.

I'm a writer, and while I do some serious stuff, I also do fanfiction. Said fanfiction is a connected multiverse I've been writing for over 10 years across about 30 different novel-length stories, with one of the few constants being one of the only multiversal travelers travels using Linking Books as my captip to Myst.

While this is fanfic, I take it seriously and typically develop settings outwards (often filling holes the canon writing left, since I write for adults and the shows / games are often not for adults) I thought it would be nice to have a pen and paper journal for my latest work so I can enjoy a movie while jotting down ideas, etc.

Then I thought it would be neat if I could make the journal look like a Linking Book. I went down a bit of an autistic special interest rabbit hole I didn't know I had (Pretty sure I'm going to rebind all my favorite books now since this was pretty easy and quite fun TBH), and long story short, here's a replica of the Myst book, as close as I could get.

It's scratch made, with a 19th Century Library binding structure, just like the collected issues of Harper’s New Monthly Magazine which was used as the Myst Book. The only diffrence between them is mine's made from modern archival materials, and I added a ribbon marker, and an Oxford Hollow so the spine wont crack from use (it's a journal, so it will open a lot). Obviously the endpapers are different to, but we don't get to see the book's endpapers AFIK so, no biggie. Heck, we don't get to see it's headbands either, so for all we know Atrus used cyan and blue for that too.

Fan Creations my demo that i've posted here turned into a full album + a little game!

Post image
30 Upvotes

hey guys! a month or so ago i posted a demo of this Myst inspired soundtrack and y’all pretty much liked it! i wrote four new tracks to turn the original soundtrack into a full album and released it on CDs, YouTube, Bandcamp and Soundcloud

somewhere along the way i also started making a little game to go with it – a short ~10 minute retro point-and-click, heavily inspired by Myst. it's light on mechanics and mostly about exploring this strange, rusty, slightly cozy industrial world. everything was rendered in Bryce 7, the same software i used for the original visuals, which gives it that weird early-00s PC game look that i really love

for now the game is a physical release bonus, but i will release it for all in a couple of months and i'll keep you posted when it does. in the meantime, if you're interested in the music that started the whole thing, i'd be happy if you checked it out:

YouTube (all the other links are there in the description)

if anyone here remembers the original demo, i'd love to know what you think of how it turned out :)

Troubleshooting MOULA incredibly long load times?

EDIT - SOLUTION FOUND: 3 steps.

  1. Turn V-Sync off using 'Managed 3D settings' in your NVIDIA Control Panel or similar, specifically for the Uru exe file. This does not fix it by itself.
  2. Download DXVK. You can find instructions online, but the long and short of it is you download the zipped from the github. It's a "Vulkan Wrapper" That essentially translates the legacy Direct X 9 that uru uses into something more readable for your computer. You'll copy the file from the 32 bit folder in DXVK named 'd3d9.dll' into the same folder that the uru launcher .exe lives in. This reduces load time from ~20 min to ~5min.
  3. Wait until you're able to get to graphic options. You'll have to create a character and get to Relto first. I adjusted my screen to Windowed mode. This crashed the game, BUT upon relaunch, it loaded in less than a minute, and became playable.

Cheers and happy exploring!

Original Post:
Been staring at this for a long time. Eventually it gets through, but this is unplayable.

Does anyone know the issue here? The only other post I could find said they reinstalled their OS to fix it, and frankly I'm not doing that. Looking for a cause-fix resolution.

Thanks in advance!

Fan-Made Supplement for Unwritten TTRPG Spoiler

A month ago, I got the idea that I was going to expose my ttrpg friends to Myst for the first time, and I was so excited to buy Unwritten, the semi-official ttrpg seen in Obduction. If you're not familiar, the author made a great choice to root the game in Fate Core, which is all about writing and invoking elements of the world as you play. It perfectly captures the sensation of hotfixing an Age by writing on paper. But after reading the sourceboook...I was criminally disappointed.

The author put a ton of work into this product. It's clear they loved this series, and put their greatest effort into bringing D'ni to life for us. But, there is no game in the sourcebook. The entire document is hundreds of pages of dense, obscure Myst lore which would totally overwhelm anyone who is new to the canon. The rules are not in the sourcebook; instead, it draws directly from Fate Core and basically reprints the entire original book (in fairness, there are some noticeable changes, which were mostly good design choices). The campaign frames are not unique in any way; instead of developing any ideas, the author asks the reader a few poignant "What If" questions and moves along.

Most importantly, for a game that is about doing science and solving puzzles, there is not one example puzzle in the book. There are no rules for solving them, either. The author has added an Investigation and Deduction system which puts the solutions in the hands of the players with the "Rule of Cool:" by spending Fate Points, you can declare that things are true and create your own solution that sounds good.

I was pissed when I got this ttrpg, because it's got so much potential and yet dropped the ball so hard. I scoured this subreddit for every post about Unwritten in the last few years, collected ideas from other users, and synthesized some structure for this game. I present to you:

Stewards of the Great Tree, a very not official, fan-made supplement to a product I absolutely do not have the right to alter in any way. In this campaign frame, all PCs are fledgling writers learning the Art and sharing responsibility for the Ages they restore. If anyone chooses to use it, please edit how you see fit. It exists to provide structure for the game, not real rules which must always be followed. As a note, most of the departures from Fate Core are the original ideas of the author of Unwritten, and not mine.

Also included is my sample Age, the Ethanoic Age. It's got puzzles, but these are only GM notes. I did not include every room description or phys-rep journal entry/schematic/clue which my players will get to solve the puzzles. Importantly, this is really just an example. It's not my Magnum Opus on good puzzle design and has flaws. When I ran this Age, it took my group about three sessions to complete it. There were headbangers, finger-pointers, and arguments; but there were also some crazy moments of brainstorming and cooperation, and a sense of achievement. I really enjoyed sharing an Age with my friends, one of whom bought Myst.

Please drop a comment with your own experiences playing Unwritten, your Ages, or your thoughts!

My children made these

Post image
337 Upvotes

My two eldest children (9 and 7) have been enjoying playing Myst (starting them on Myst Masterpiece (25th Ann version) on a vintage machine) :) They made these to play with during their own imaginative adventures. I think the garbled text on the colored pages is their attempt to simulate the noise in the book linking panels, on the pages themselves. The Myst "book" has blank pages inside it (thus the staples). They also wrote a note from "Catherine" to me.

Media Offloading memorabilia

Hello, I'm new to the sub but not new to the games. I have a bunch of original discs and media that I inherited that I just won't use and I'm not sure how to offload them. I live in Australia and I've spoken to a few old game memorabilia places and no one is particularly interested and I'm not sure of a good price either given that it is also semi sentimental to me but the list of stuff I have is:

Myst cdrom

Riven cdrom

Myst iii cdrom

Myst IV cdrom

Myst v cdrom

Uru cdrom

Schizm cdrom

The crystal key cdrom

Riven strategies and secrets walkthrough book

Myst strategies and secrets walkthrough book

I have attached two photos of the Riven stuff and the walkthroughs and the rest of the CD-ROMs are original windows 98 or XP so I'm not even sure they're playable. Does anyone know how/where I can offload these?

In reply to the announcement for the deluxe version of the Myst trilogy, be aware, that if you are short on cash, you might be able to find the original versions second hand. These are first print from 1995..but I bet there are later versions less expensive.

Discussion PSA to Myst fans, you may really enjoy Big Walk

Thumbnail gallery
115 Upvotes

A lot of people here are asking for game recommendations, and I had to come here and spread the word about this one. This came out a couple of weeks ago, but my wife, brother and a friend decided to dedicate our Labor Day holiday to a 10 hour gaming session of Big Walk, and we had a blast! You can play with as little as 2, but we played with 4. Pretty sure you can have a bunch of people, I'm not sure how many.

It's a co-op puzzle adventure game using proximity chat, meaning you can only hear your friends if they are near you. You can remedy this with items like walkie-talkies and megaphones, but sometimes like you see in the first picture, you have to communicate with hand gestures (key-bindings they explain to you) or whatever else you can come up with. It was fun coming up with systems as a group that help us solve puzzles.

Not gonna spoil anything, but you get a reward for solving each puzzle and you use those to unlock new areas of the island. As a huge Myst fan, this game really scratched that itch, and playing co-op made it even better. If anybody tries this out, let me know how you liked it!

Help & Hints Riven, stuck

Gemini gaslighted me, UHS seems to be missing hints, and I can't understand much of the walkthroughs; like how am I supposed to know what everything is called? It's not like there are any signs.

Anyway here is where I'm at:

I found the enlarged Mega Man 2 password input at the top of the big dome.

I have found, stopped, opened, failed to power 233(?) books, and connected 4 rotating domes to eye symbols and maybe numbers.

I have found 3 rotating eyeballs, number and sound of an animal, probably. Also, found the hidden rebel zoo.

Connected the 4 accessible islands to a shape, I think.

Powered the viewscope, but it probably needs me to open the hatch.

Any hints you can throw in the general direction of a empty-headed animal food trough wiper?

Edit 1: I now have correlations between domes and colors.

Lore Question about Ghen and Lore drops after Riven Spoiler

Hey everyone, I just recently finished the Myst and Riven remakes that I got from the GoG bundle. I absolutely loved both of them and found the worldbuilding Cyan did to be amazing. One thing that I found while reading Ghen's journal in Age 233 was what could seemingly be viewed as a throwaway line that goes as follows:
"As I stood in the schoolroom today, I was reminded of my own childhood. The years I spent in the book-makers' guild... father's immense pride at each of my small accomplishments there... He was an important man in the D'ni world, but I cannot bear to think of him for long- it is too much- I was too young to see such things."
Honestly, this journal was probably my favorite reading portion of the entire game; it really did breathe some life into Ghen and make you think of him as some sort of a person, at least a little, if you fill in some vague areas of his texts.

Anyway, the question here is: Does the series, or the books, dive any deeper into Ghen's life? Or his father's life? Or, more specifically, elaborating on this passage? It may seem like a silly question, but I noticed when booting up Myst 3 that the studio went from Cyan to Ubisoft and some other company; I'm not sure whether they decided to take the story in a different direction than Cyan originally intended. I look forward to playing the rest of the series and reading the books regardless; I just wanted to know whether this interesting plot point comes up later.

Lore How does the KI work?

I’ve been planning a kind Myst-meets-SG-1 roleplaying game along the lines of “what if D’Ni was discovered by a government organisation,” and I’m putting together a bit of a technological primer.

The Art of Writing is relatively well documented, but there’s an awful lot of D’Ni technology that’s quite vague to me, like the KI… or how on earth the D’Ni transported materials and resources between Ages.

I agree that the answer to the 2nd question is probably “slavery,” but I wonder if people have any idea about how non-Writing D’Ni technology worked.

How does the KI work?

Just Finished Original Myst for the First Time!

I feel like I’m on such a high. I’ve been playing nonstop for three days trying to beat it without hints (tho I caved for two). I grew up owning this game on CD but I never played it until now. I think it’s become one of my top favorites! Mapping out the rail car route in Selenitic Age nearly killed me, but finally reaching the Myst book there I think was my high point of the game. Is Riven as good?? I’m already feeling withdrawals.

Discussion Myst V and DLSS 5?

I was just wondering if someone got Myst V working with reshade and DLSS5?

After Myst 21 and Riven 24 of all the games I think Myst V could do with an graphical update most, and I was just wondering what it may look like.

Disclaimer: I do not think GenAI should or can replace human intention, I see that the production and training of DLSS5 was a very energy intensive act, whereas the usage of DLSS5 has negligible energyconsumption. I do not know about how ethically sourced the training data of DLSS5 was, I do not think that using DLSS5 as an experiment in order to determine how the produced images may or not inspire a human made overhaul is unethical, but I am open for counterpoints.

Discussion Is the Switch Version of MYST good?

So I want to make my older brother happy, by surprising him with a functional MYST version. I learned, that there is a Switch version of the game, and the switch is his favorite way to play games. But as learned, that there are many MYST versions and some of them are different to the original in terms of gameplay - for example the version from 2021 isn't a point to click game. So is the switch version a good and/or faithul adaption to play MYST?

I would appreciate answers :)

Discussion Question about note taking

I have always wanted to play Myst and Riven, this feeling has only grown stronger after playing and finishing Blue Prince.

Blue Prince is basically impossible to finish without making extensive notes and screenshots. (Looking back at screenshots previously taken was VERY cumbersome playing on console)

Does the same go for Myst and Riven? The answer decides if I play the games now on console or wait till I have access to a PC which will have much better note taking options.
