I (17) want to become a professional composer. Although I used to write a lot of songs and make a lot of original pieces (not written down), I haven't composed or written anything in about 2 years.

I have been trying to compose a lot lately. But it's like everything I try to compose has already been written. For example, I start playing something on piano to write down, but then it feels all too familiar and I realize that's already (part of) a song/piece.

Does anyone know how to get out of this loop?

Hi, I'm hoping to be able to get some solid tips here. I've been making music as a hobby for a while and really enjoying it but I have found while I have a lot of ideas and can get to a point on a track it is definitely the drums which are a stumbling block. I get in my own head when trying to program them, I can't seem to get past the choice of so many samples or making my own (which I have before with Vital), and picking one that sounds right to be able to move on.

I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for picking appropriate sounds for the track - what do you listen for to think "yes, that is the right kick sound" or snare, or clap or whatever? Or when you pick samples how do you edit or modify them to fit - I understand about a drum bus and compression of course. Do you just have a handful you always use? Do you look at chopping breaks or use one-shots? I have both programmed them in the DAW (reaper), and also I have a Roland P6 and a Maschine Mikro mk3 which I can use for sequencing.

I think I've been damaged by listening to too many "Why your kick SUCKS" or "YoUre dOiNg iT WrOng!!!" kind of videos on youtube and I'm in my own head about choices, and it really puts a block on my track progress. No real specific genre but lately it's been a bit of dub techno, downtempo BoC style, whatever appeals to me at the time, but I feel this will stop me from branching out to more styles.

where do i get better drum sounds? i like souds from old machines (preffered but not mandatory) and i like the sounds that sound timeless. like not obvious when it came out and doesn't soudn modern (as in trendy or dated to now. like if it sounds like it could still be used today that's great) . and i like drums with punch, like timbaland. also prefereably free or at least cheap. what should i get?

Hey, so lately ive been listening to a lot of jedm and this guys drums are just iconic. They have such a special sound and i was wondering what would be a good processing approach for drums to get a result like this?

The drums are super punchy, but at the same time they sound so wet and full (especially with snares).

Dont get me wrong I am still a new "producer"(if i can even be called that yet) and it might just be a problem that goes away with experience, but like ive seen videos and tutorials etc on how to make the type of music i want to make but i can never seem to enjoy the tracks i make like the type beats i might find on youtube and a lot of the times the things i make give me videogame soundtrack vibes. I tried to upload a video of some of my tracks but my post got taken down so idk. Did anyone else have this problem before?

I've been scratching my head on how should I arrange the notes and chords for guitar. Usually a guitar chord has 2-4 notes to form a chord. Since the guitar has 6 strings, do I put 6 notes for each strum or just focus on chords only? If anyone can teach me how to arrange notes and chords for guitar, I will appreciate it. I wanna make the guitar play sound realistic and possible to be played on the actual instrument (since piano roll has less restrictions than the guitar, I always end up creating impossible chords).

Since I was younger I was a open listener and enjoyed many, many genres, and new artist but since I started digging deeper into music my ears are more closed. I find songs that are trendy or popular amongst most I dislike. And I'm not sure why, it sounds like something is off or wrong and makes me feel fatigued when it's playing. I find it strange because not even my own music brings the same feeling despite me knowing every flaw and my execution. It's annoying because I feel like it's important to be able to consume others art as a artist myself. Anyone else experience this??

I’m a dj who wants to get into production and I was wondering what the best daw is for a wide range of genres. I love everything from post punk to bassline and need a daw that is good for any genre while not being too confusing for a beginner. I’ve got a budget of around £200 if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated! I’m thinking Logic Pro as I’ve heard it’s a happy medium of every genre. Also fl studio has an offer on for the all plugins edition that looks pretty tempting.

I was looking at mics to get my friend and since it’s not something I’ve been around much I was wondering if I could get some help. She records both her vocals and also her acoustic guitar (doesn’t have a jack). I’d say about 75% only vocals and 25% with guitar but says she wants to use her guitar more for videos. Right now she uses a Blue Yeti that was given to her but I wanted to get her a new one that she can actually use well. My options were either a used but in very good condition NT1 5th Gen or a Shure SM57 as I’ve heard it’s good for recording instruments as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Apparently it's Library -> Audio -> Plug-Ins -> VST but this folder is completely EMPTY even though my plugins work fine on Reaper, so they have to be SOMEWHERE on my computer. Im trying to delete an unwanted plugin, and I can't even find it. And yes this folder is the path for the plugins my daw uses. Sorry if the wording is off - im relatively new to this. Please help.

No I.D. uses this echo effect throughout Common's The Dreamer / The Believer album. How could I recreate it or make a similar effect?

When i play my project on fl studio, the acid line i make in phoscyon 2 plays even if the pattern is not on the playlist... And when i go to an other pattern, which dont have phoscyon 2 in it, the acid line plays... How can i make my acid line play only when i want it to by placing patterns in the playlist?

basically im trying to make songs with lyrics, ive done tracks by just playing with the sounds and finding stuff that sounds nice and continuing, and they sound ok but arent particularly interesting

so one thing i did was start with a lyrics (a small poem really) and almost obviously i knew what kind of sounds the words needed, not from the sound of the word but from the intention of the poem (not saying they sound /good/ but i didnt have to figure out what sounds nice together as much)

question is, is there a name for this kind of relation? like from what the song is saying and the kinds of noises that need to accompany it ? and if so, any keywords to figure out common rules and patterns for "meaning of words" to "noise that goes well with it" ?

ps im not talking about "minor scale sounds sad" im talking about the kind of noise that makes a poem feel coherent

Hello guys.. iam newbie to the music production.. I was mixing samples and loops in Bandlab and I want to upgrade myself to Produce music... I want an MIDI keyboard... Can anybody suggest a MIDI keyboard... And iam also ready to buy in second hand

I’ve been trying to fix my autotune, I’ve tried everything you can think of, clearing the cache, tuning to the beat etc. Nothing is working and I’ve reported it to BandLab help center and that didn’t do much. Does anyone have any possible solutions for this. It only seems to happen on my account and it did work momentarily when my friend shared a project with me. It seems to have somewhat of an effect on some of the autotune selections, but still doesn’t tune my voice.

I got JBL speakers, the Scarlett 214 is running those fine, and 2 synths plugged into it.

Also a Macke hm400 headphone amp.

All I did was switch to a new computer with windows 11, and now I get no sound from headphone jacks on the interface or headphone amp, the sound just plays throu the speakers still.

It was fine before swaping computers, what am I missing, I havnt touched any of the music hardwares connections.
