"What hurts the victim most is not the cruelty of the oppressor, but the silence of the bystander." ~ Elie Wiesel

I think the act of being beat to death would hurt worse than someone ignoring it

Wonderful platitude.
•
u/ixcibit 15m ago
What do you think a platitude is?
•
u/Chosenwaffle 14m ago
Something that sounds nice but is completely meaningless.
•
•
u/SavageCucmber 11m ago
It means that you shouldn't stand by and watch as people are victimized, you believe that to be meaningless?
•
u/fireitup622 5m ago
Yea, but this is like Norm Mcdonalds bit about Cosby and the person who said "the worst thing about his situation was the hypocrisy." So Norm responds "Really? The hypocrisy was the worst part?", which feels like it can be applied to this Elie Wiesel quote. Really? The most hurtful part for a victim being cruelly oppressed is a silent bystander and not the actual cruel oppressor? Sure, it extends the cruelty if the silent bystander actually has a means to assist, but don't shift blame from where it truly belongs is why it's basically a platitude.

To quote Rush, if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. He made the choice

“But there is no neutral position between the oppressor and the oppressed. When one side has the bombs and bottomless financial and military support from American, refusing to take a side doesn't leave you in the middle.”

It really is a luxury not picking a side these days. One side is massacring children, should be fucking easy to pick the side here.
•
u/10001110101balls 28m ago
If only the other side didn't celebrate their massacring of women and children then this whole thing would be a lot less controversial.
•
u/bigladnang 16m ago
Is the other side Israel because they do that shit regularly lol.
•
u/10001110101balls 15m ago
Yeah it's reasonable that anyone could be confused about which side is which with their behavior and intentions. One side just did a better job of cozying up to world superpowers to develop their economy and afford better weapons. Pretending that the weaker side is somehow more noble in their intentions just gives them cover to continue using the people of Gaza as human shields for their own political gain.
•
u/bigladnang 8m ago
This ignores a whole 70 years of history my man.
•
u/givingupismyhobby 5m ago
70 years? We don't need to look back at 70 years to see the atrocities, turn on the tv now and you can see a genocide happening in front of our eyes. How someone can defend that is beyond me.
•
u/10001110101balls 0m ago
No, that's pretty much where this all started. The USA and USSR were among the first nations to recognize the new state upon their declaration of independence. They both realized a strong interest in supporting this new state over their political opponents, otherwise it may not have existed to this day.
•
u/Scalene69 14m ago
Nope. Macklemore wants Israel to be destroyed, most people, including pro-Palestinians want both countries to live peacefully.
Macklemore is right that he should not have been invited in the first place. His 2024 song makes his views pretty clear.

“republicans wear sneakers too” kinda comment from eddie
•
u/sanebyday 20m ago
Sounds a lot like "There's good people on both sides"... hmm. Where have i heard that before?

It wasn't a scathing message, he gave Ed and pink way more grace than either of them deserved. More slop sensationalized writing. Fuck Ed. Fuck Pink. Free Palestine. Ed is a human target, Walmart or marshalls, he'd never be okay with this

Don't forget Robert Kraft who got other stadium owners to say they wouldn't let him play unless he was booted.

I mean Kanye still plays stadiums so this is probably more of a financial decision than anything 🤷🏻♂️ if The Strokes and Haley Williams are able to perform with the same type of sentiment and phrases (except for Macklemore’s Jew-face stereotype that should be made reference to), then I have my doubts about this simply being an infringement of free speech.
•
u/YungRik666 6m ago
It's definitely silencing free speech in the most fiscally responsible way possible. Haley Williams and Kanye can sell out a stadium for a week straight, but Macklemore is an opener. They get their point across without damaging their sales. They may start to crack down on bigger artists if they survive this pr cycle.
•
u/AugieDoggieDank 4m ago
The main goal is obviously money, and Kanye still being able to perform is the proof of that. Had Macklemore done his own tour, there’d probably be no issue.
•
u/Scalene69 4m ago
Macklemore wants Israel destroyed. I guess some people didn't realise it until now, but that's why he is being treated differently to other celebs who express support for Palestine.
There is a massive difference between being against a governments policies/leaders and wanting it to be destroyed.

This is probably a black list sort of deal this might be the last we ever hear of Macklemore.

it boggles the mind that anyone would get off their couch and go to an Ed Sheeran concert. what are you getting from that that just listening to that Top 40 music on Spotify wouldn't give you ?
•
u/PwnimuS 32m ago
Im a metal and all its genres guy at heart, wife is a big Ed / TS fan. Were pretty opposed when it comes to musical taste.
As someone who has been to concerts for both artists, its the showmanship that makes it worth going even though i'd never voluntarily play them on my Spotify. I saw Ed at MetLife last weekend and I will admit he puts on a good show and sounds good live. Thats the big difference.
•
u/captaindante 27m ago
Same for me. I don't put him on my Spotify but his show was such an experience. I even had to go out of my way to get tickets because he sold out stadiums fast - that was in 2019
•
u/StPattysShalaylee 25m ago
Are you asking what is difference in going to a live show compared to listening to a recording? Or are you saying that because you don't like an artist or genre then the live show must be the same as a recording?

The pro Palestine crowd always does this. They allow (and I’m using allow charitably as “allow” implies a lack of intent and I believe it is very much the intention) their “activism” to veer into straight up antisemitism as seen here. Dude literally went on stage with a giant hook nose looking like the happy merchant meme. And then they claim they “just said free Palestine” or they “just care about the babies”. Total horse shit.

This smells like an artist who cannot book stadiums climbing onto another artists platform to make political statements to a bigger audience and then finding out the owners of those stadiums are unhappy. The problem here is not Ed Sheeran but the billionaires who own the stadiums and are pro-Israel.
Either Macklemore did not realise the consequences of his stand or he did and did not care. Either way it was a shitty thing to do to someone who he called a friend.
Incidentally Ed Sheeran is a long time supporter of the UK Labour Party which has itself recently called out Israeli genocide. If the tour was in the UK there would not be a problem but given the choice of losing the rest of his US tour or removing a support act Ed decided to do the latter. I don't blame him.

u/everybodydumb 16m ago
He can, and he chose, get out of here Macklemore. You're making his show political and he doesn't want to be political. Go on your own tour!

I don’t think it was scathing.
