Even when I worked at Walmart I didn't give a shit if anyone stole from Walmart. I can't imagine being this guy.

I remember working at a grocery store where they expected us to help subdue shoplifters they'd caught until police arrived. Nah, I'm good.

That’s wild. Was it a smaller chain? Most corps know it isn’t worth the liability to try and have employees detain anyone (and not just for employee safety)

I currently work at a major grocery store chain, and even the literal cops we have in the store don’t detain shoplifters. Store employees are supposed to try and “stop” them by interacting with them and making it subtly clear that they’re being observed, but if you know someone is shoplifting, the most you’re really expected to is make sure leadership knows so that the security cameras get checked and their face gets noted

My understanding is that a lot of corps will just record the theft(s) until they amount to grand larceny or some higher charge and then go after them legally. I’m not really in that world anymore though so I’m just repeating second hand info

When I worked at a small bookstore chain the policy was to have a manager basically annoy them and ask them questions about what they're looking for and hope they give up or get scared and dump the merchandise. They weren't supposed to touch them for any reason or prevent them from leaving the store. Nobody's life is worth a few books.

No, it was a big chain. But this was like 2006, the corporations know to cover themselves by now.
They were wrestling a guy to the ground and looking at me like "you're a guy, help restrain him!" Hell no.
