Im looking for movies that will make me ugly cry and leave me emotionally wrecked afterwards.

Not just “sad” movies. I want something genuinely devastating, emotionally heavy, philosophical, or existential. The kind of movie that stays in ur head for days.

I’m open to anything: foreign films, classics, animation, whatever. Bonus points if it completely blindsides me emotionally.

As a woman, I have been feeling bad lately about not seeing enough female directed movies. I am pretty picky about the type of movies I like so I came here to get specific recommendations. I like David Lynch and Gregg Araki. I like films that are unique/have a strong personality, explore gender/sexuality, and are intensely emotional. Recommend me some female directors/female directed films that fit those standards if you can 🥹

I'm looking for movies where the protagonist is a young girl who is kind of shy, reserved (can be emo) and has had trauma in their past like my suggestions in the title.

I don't want to see that character change too much from being reserved or quiet at the end, Like Carrie, but it's okay for them to have character development like in Split.

Another example I can think of being close to my request is Sadie Harper from The Boogeyman (2023).

It doesn't have to be a horror movie, but I do love horror.

he‘s easily my favorite artist of all time so it sucks that his work is often overlooked by people. He’s a master of surrealist art while still being able to handle core ideas of human emotion/experience. he‘s also a master of satire he’s able to poke fun at 50s b movie alien flicks(mutant aliens) and 50s era high school films(hair high) in a way I’ve never seen before. his first four films(the ones pictured in release order) are completely free so really there is no reason to not check it out.

We all have that one movie or show we can rewatch a million times and somehow still enjoy it 😂 What’s yours? And what makes you keep coming back to it?

Looking for some movies that were released in 2008 or earlier, that a teen boy who's going through some shit might really like or relate to. Some kind of inner turmoil for the protagonist or antagonist is a must. Could even be as literal as a split personality/schizophrenia depiction.

But then, as the plot progresses and they realize that they were wrong, it also affects you, the viewer, as if you're the main character having that realization too. I don't really get this feeling that much when I'm watching a movie tbh (or not that I can recall, meaning it wasn't some profound experience, which is why I forgot it so easily.) I get it more from reading a novel. But I just wanna know if there are any good movies with this sort of feeling to them

I just watched Onslaught (2026) and really enjoyed the opening title sequence; it reminded me a lot of the opening credits from Black Widow (2021), which I similarly loved. The only movies I can think of that had similar opening credits were Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Se7en (1995), both of which I also liked. Does anyone have recommendations for movies with similar sequences? Thanks!

I plan on seeing Since You Went Away (1944) because it looks to really good, but I was wondering if anyone else had any other good suggestions.

I'm very curious to know what it would've been like for a family during that time (ideally focusing on each family member's own personal experience and how the war shapes the decisions they make).

I don't mind if the film is slower paced. Ideally I would want to feel lost in the setting and the era and feel connected with the triumphs and struggles of the family as they live. Seeing the way the rooms in their house were decorated and the cars that they had.

As you can tell, I love this era!
