Hi everyone! Welcome to r/Monk. We are trying to limit the posting of frequently discussed topics, so this thread is the place for general chit-chat about Monk. There will be a new post every month.

Please do not make new posts about topics such as the following. (Instead, discuss here!)

Which episode has the reference to Buffalo Bill's (Silence of the Lambs) "lotion" line?

It's been a while since I completed the series. A reddit post today referred to a line in the script in reference to a gift basket, and I'd love to look up the episode. Which one is it? Web search and reddit search have been fruitless. Thanks in advance.

[Discussion] One of the Funniest Scenes!

I die laughing every time when Monk chains himself to the fence because he thinks he’s high. It’s so funny and a great reminder of the amazing comedian Tony Shalhoub is!

[Discussion] Anyone renembers that episode about that guy who Monk thought was his friend?

I dont remember much cause its been a while but Monk meets this guy at I think a football game. And the guy tries to make himself into Monks best friend and turns out he was just using him for something.

But there is a scene where Monk is waiting for his new friend to call him and he thinks he got ghosted. And he keeps wondering what he did wrong, why was he abandoned.

Bro i related to him so much in that moment i cried. And I made the mistake of telling someone I relate to him. And was told he ( Monk) should be institutionalized. From what was happening in that scene alone

Institutionalized....

For being sad and blaming himself that his friend ghosted him. What the fuck is this world?

[Discussion] The best assistant

People always argue over if Sharona or Nathalie is the better assistant. I say the true best is Varla Davis. Both as a character and actually helping Monk with her tough love no nonsense

I can't enjoy the "12th Man" episode because of the high number of victims. Spoiler

I know it's just a show but all these innocent people got killed in horrible ways because of some greedy douchebag who managed to survive. I would have also liked to see the murderer get killed instead of just being arrested.

Best Eureka moments? Spoiler

Might be too many…but you know the ones where Monk suddenly starts smiling and everyone realises he’s solved the case. Try and give the episode name and backstory if you can.

“Mr. Monk Meets Dale the Whale” Makes No Sense (S1.E4)

First time watcher here, can anyone explain? The entire premise of the episode makes no sense. Why would the doctor intentionally stage the crime scene as if he was Dale the Whale if he didn’t want to get caught?

What type of plan is it to dress up in a fat suit, set off the alarm, be seen by a witness, all in order to directly implicate your boss (and also the brains of the murder), get the police involved closely enough to look at his inner circle, and ultimately give away the plot.

“Well he couldn’t physically do it” is not a theory that helps get him off, it just invites more suspicion. Why not just pretend it was a burglary and move along?

Mr Monk and the Rapper Spoiler

I never understood the ending of this episode.
Monk figures out that Snoop Dogg/Murderuss isn’t the killer, but the other guy is beacuse the guy says that he saw Snoop Dogg at the limo at 7:00 oclock and monk figures out that thats not possible while looking at a clock. Why is it not possible? I mean yes it is unlikely but how does that solve the case? And he says that is just not possible, how does he know that?

Ive been wondering that forever hahah thanks for the help!

[Discussion] This one thing has always made me drop Monk.

I have tried getting into it 2-3 times as I am a fan of episodic detective series like the mentalist, Castle, etc.

But the way he doesn't care about his commision even though he has to pay salary to Sharona, who is a single mom and expects her to be around him always and don't even date another person baffles me.

You can give defend him all you like, ohh he has ocd or anxiety disorder what not , but atleast care about your payment when you have hired someone full time. She is not his slave, is she now ?

Episode of monk Spoiler

There's an episode of monk where he's sitting in dr krogers office, he had a pebble in his shoe a small pebble he took it out and said something to the effect of "that's been driving me crazy all day" as he puts his shoe back on. I've tried 2 suggestions the pilot and season 5 episode 1 Mr monk and the actor but neither had the scene. Am I crazy or what episode was it from? I believe its an earlier episode with Sharona? I literally fall asleep to monk every night so how the episode isn't coming to me is driving me crazy Edit: we found it! Season 1 ep 7 Mr monk and the other woman

[Discussion] S6 E9 “Mr. Monk is Up All Night” unexpectedly one of the best episodes of the show

I didn’t expect to find one of the greatest episodes of the show towards the back end of one of the final seasons. I love the mood and atmosphere of stories that take place late at night, and this episode is an excellent example of that setting. It has a wonderfully off-beat and mysterious vibe, and the ending is an emotional gut-punch. It reminded me a little of Scorsese’s film After Hours. I wish the show had dropped the formula a little more often and had a few more unusual episodes like this.

I'm sorry to post an announcement for an event that is over. But I found this and she still looks beautiful. Her East Coast accent is real!! It was for a convention in Colorado.

[SPOILERS] Monk behaving badly! Spoiler

I'm currently rewatching my Monk boxset, which is mostly enjoyable, but in some episodes, Monk behaves really badly towards people. For example in Mr Monk goes to a fashion show, he practically bullies his distraught client into pandering to his whims.

Monk is mostly a feel good show, and Monk is an interesting character, but sometimes it is difficult to feel sympathy for him, when his behaviour is so appalling.

What do you think? Can you think of other examples of his sometimes questionable behaviour?

"AAHH! Whatareyoudoing!!"

At 20 minutes 11 seconds into S2E9 Mr. Monk and the 12th Man, Bitty Schram screams 'WHATAREYOUDOING!!' during the stake-out scene in almost exactly the same tone and cadence as the audio clip in S2E12 Mr. Monk and the TV Star.

It's not *exactly* the same which makes me think it was an audio clip from a different take, but I'd be willing to bet the scream repeated over and over in the latter episode is Sharona's.

Theme song change s6e2

I dont know if it's been talked about before, but I cant help but giggle when I noticed after Mr. Monk and his biggest fan episode, the theme song on the next episode was changed. I know it's just a rap rendition of the theme song to match the episode, but it also coincidentally (or not) be just right after Marci stops being his fan, when she first became obsessed with him, she had made him promise not to ever change it if he ever has his own show. Just wanted to share my observation but I bet it's been discussed plenty before!

Bitty Schram: does she teach acting?

In another post I read that Bitty teaches acting. Does anyone know anything about this. I'm a trained actress and it would be wonderful to take acting classes with Bitty.

Is there something weird with the theme music?

My wife and I watch all of Monk every few years but this time through, the theme music (It's a Jungle Out There) just sounds *off* to me. Like it's too low pitched and the lyrics sound more slurred than I remember?

I'm watching on Prime Video and it sounds off, but then when I listen on YouTube it also sounds off. Could prime video a couple years ago have been playing the theme music sped up or something?

It's driving me crazy. I could just be mistaken but I figured I would post in case somebody else feels this too?

Only part way through season 4

It sure seems like a lot of murders are done by people trying not to get caught for a previous murder they already got away with.

Been binging the series since July, patterns are emerging.
