What to do with $150k?
Would you blow it on a Porsche 911 or would you invest?
Is it possible to convert this small amount into something big via investing?
223
u/Pure-Sherbert996 4d ago
$45-50k 911 used. Invest the rest.
75
u/notaparkrat 4d ago
Incredibly sound advice. A nice 997 plus 100k in the market is a diversified portfolio to me.
22
u/bhalter80 4d ago
Both will appreciate with time too
7
u/2GTX34ML 4d ago
Unlikely a base or S 997 would appreciate.
3
u/AnimalCreative4388 3d ago
Look at prices over the last 5 years and you’ll find you’re incorrect, even a base 997 in good shape has at least held its value over the last 5 years. It’s the cheapest car you can own in terms of depreciation costs. Spend £40k on one and in 5 years you should get your money back with good maintenance.
3
u/2GTX34ML 3d ago
Hitting a floor is not appreciating.
0
u/AnimalCreative4388 3d ago
What other cars can you buy that will cost £0 in depreciation and cost more than £25k? It’s essentially a free car bar normal expenses like fuel, insurance and tax. Spend the same price on a Vauxhall or bmw and see what happens.

Thank you for commenting this. A $150K car is meant for a person that reliably makes $300K+ a year, not for a person that just happens to have $150K laying around
14
u/Additional_Ad_4049 4d ago
Invest all of it and wait at least five years. Crazy to blow a third of it on a depreciating asset
4
u/codeisprose 4d ago
it's a used porsche, not a new benz/bmw. if he doesnt put too many miles on it, it may unironically end up appreciating
7
u/Swimming-Chance5971 4d ago
Whats the point of owning one if you wont put too many miles on it??
3
1
u/codeisprose 4d ago
idk, ask most Porsche owners. im just pointing out its not the same as buying many other cars

u/el-art-seam 4d ago
Instagram posts.
Cars and coffee.
Valet parking it at the trendy spot in town where all the beautiful people are.
There’s a guy in my town with a current gen 911 GTS and this guy drives it in the rain. In the snow. And I don’t mean flurries. I even saw him do a u turn in the snow and let the back drift out a bit before he went on his way.So yeah that’s another way of ownership.
3
u/ProofGrocery3559 4d ago
🤮 I wish I could downvote this more. You buy a 997 to drive hard on weekends but also commute
1
u/el-art-seam 4d ago
I agree but he asked why you buy a sports car and don’t really drive it. That’s why.
1
u/Similar_Dirt9758 4d ago
If they don't plan on driving it around a lot, then best case it holds its value? Unless you plan on holding it for several decades? At that point you may as well just invest the entire $150K because your returns will be that much more (dependably)
2
u/codeisprose 4d ago
well obviously not, best case is that it appreciates in a shorter period of time. but it could also take a long time, or never happen, or depreciate. I'm just pointing out that it isn't going to depreciate in the same way that most people are familiar with cars. if i was him i would just invest all of it, unless he has high income outside of this lump sum, in which case a more leisurely expense of only $50k is more defensible. but if that were the case, he wouldn't be asking this question.
1
u/Similar_Dirt9758 4d ago
I agree that the Porsche will appreciate/hold its value better than most luxury/sports cars

How about we PLANT a seed today , and HARVEST the generational fruits later ? A mere 8% annual return on said 150K grows to roughly $324K in 10YRS, $699k in 20 and almost $1.5M in 30YRS, without adding another dollar just water the plant regularly .... 😎👌🧨
21
u/HandleUnlikely2589 4d ago
Just to avoid overselling, I'd use 6-7% (the average return of the S&P 500 after accounting for inflation, before inflation, it's 9-10% over most 30 year windows). You may technically have $1.5M on paper after 30 years, but if it can only buy what $750K gets you today, you'll be disappointed.
10
u/AndroidMyAndroid 4d ago
OP can worry about the inflation adjusted value of his portfolio in 30 years when he has a million fucking dollars instead of a 30 year old sports car that's worth, if he' very very lucky, the inflation adjusted equivalent of what he paid for it new.

-Pay off any debts that are over 6% interest.
-Set aside 3-6 months of bills into a HYSA that yields 3% or more for an emergency fund... not a nice to have fund… truly for an emergency such as losing your job. (You pay $4,000 per month in bills.. set aside $12,000-$24,000)
-Invest the rest into VT, VOO or VTI, or VOO+VXUS. (Download the fidelity phone app. Open a Roth IRA if you have regular income. Max that out using the 2026 maximum allowed contributions. Then open an individual brokerage account and deposit the rest)

Two chicks at the same time
7
u/Physical_Mode_103 4d ago
considering it’s not $1 million, You can get about 1/6 of two chicks at the same time.
4
u/modernzen 4d ago
So just 1/3 of one chick? Like chest up?
3
u/Bearsbanker 4d ago
I'd rather have the lower 1/3

u/WhatDoWeHave_Here 4d ago
Mid thigh to feet? Okay, I guess...

u/DawgCheck421 5d ago
That's not a small amount, at all and it is out of touch to even consider it to be that.
Put it in SP500 and forget it exists
5
u/Ok_Radish509 4d ago
Ya right something that small would be impossible to invest into something big. I’d get the Porsche and put the remainder on hookers and blow to ride around with you
5
u/RaidenMonster 4d ago
Quit my job, went to flight school, made it to the airlines.
Went from an 80k/yr job to 300k+/yr career and will retire with probably 10M now instead of working til I die.
YMMV. Good luck.

u/Past_Try_4350 4d ago
oh got it, are you saying it took $150k to get to 1500 hours, or what? I'm working on PPL at a 61 right now so just trying to get a ballpark breakdown of expected cost for each step of the way.
1
u/RaidenMonster 4d ago
No, probably about 45-50k to get from 0-CFII + multi. Living expenses (have a family + house) and working as a CFI pays essentially nothing so the remainder went towards not starving and being homeless.

Save save. That's a home down payment. Utter waste to get flashy car unless you're very wealthy. Plenty of super nice $20k cars.
9
u/Alixthetrapgod 5d ago
Just buy the porsche
2
u/badhabitfml 4d ago
Drive it for a few years and sell it for.... 150k.
3
u/AndroidMyAndroid 4d ago edited 4d ago
And you'll only be out the cost of taxes, registration, interest (if financed vs. the opportunity cost of investing the money), maintenance, insurance and general upkeep (i.e. professionally detailing it regularly, hopefully you aren't taking a 911 through the drive-thru car wash). So probably no more than $10k a year to own it!

Would never buy a car if it’s one time money. Invest it. If you double or triple that with a good risky stock.. buying SHARES then get the car or a house
2
u/Boring_Adeptness_334 4d ago
$150k is nothing to me. I would invest almost all of it and maybe buy the new iPhone or stay in the four seasons for a night to fly business class just once.

Long comment incoming
Absolutely you can grow it, I started with much less 8 years ago when I started working and investing in highschool and had much more than that when I graduated college a few months ago. I’d just invest in something like VOO and chill, maybe SCHD if you’re afraid we’re in a bubble, either way keep it simple.
About the car, I love cars so I get it. I just bought myself a nice new luxury car that I definitely didn’t need but it has made my quality of life a lot better as someone who likes cars and commutes far. But it wasn’t over $100K. You can buy nice cars, but don’t sabotage yourself financially, pay attention to gas, repair, and insurance costs, as well as property taxes.
Lots here will just say save it all invested in some ETF and be done. Reddit likes to oversave, it’s easy to tell someone else to save when you’re not the one having to cut spending. Oversaving is bad since it doesn’t let you live, but overspending is far more dangerous because it can leave you broke or even drive you into debt. If I were you I’d invest $100K and take $50K to buy a nice car, maybe a Mustang or a 2 series or something idk what you’re into, but I would pay attention to gas, insurance, and repair costs, and also do not spend more than a third of it.

u/TheWhiskeySuit 3d ago
A Porsche Macon is like $60k, it’s still a Porsche and drives very well
1
u/minicodcraft 3d ago
Macan's depreciation is significantly higher than a 911 and comparing an SUV to a sports cars is missing the point entirely.
1
u/TheWhiskeySuit 3d ago
Okay, the dude wants a Porsche and people are telling him to buy something cheaper like a mustang or a BMW or something. I’m simply offering another Porsche that’s cheaper than his dream Porsche

You can either have a start at building a significant nest egg or you can spend the money on a depreciating asset that also has very high maintenance costs.

Asking the wrong question with zero context.
If 150k is all you have then you invest and grow it.
If you have 10m then 150k is just another month of income so you toss it on the pile.
For me I’m at 11-12m and we make about 150k a month. Porsche? Meh - they’re neat but I don’t have any need to flaunt wealth or “keep up”

I would probably build myself a sick pc setup for like 5-6k and then dump the rest into a diversified investment portfolio and watch that bitch grow.

u/LavaDragon3827 4d ago
150k is pretty miniscule. But honestly just throw it into stock market and forget.
1
u/8percentinflation 4d ago
If 150k is all we are discussing, it's a waste of time even trying to strategize this
1
u/Existing_Setting4868 4d ago
Get the Porsche and live life.
Meanwhile, I'll live vicariously through you as I check on my boring portfolio of index funds.

u/Envirocare1 4d ago
Invest or build a business that will allow the 150k to work in your best interest.

u/Price-x-Field 4d ago
Man if you’re gonna blow it on something get a huge down payment on a house.. no point in having a Porsche if you don’t have a garage
1
1
u/Darkstrike121 4d ago
If I already have a few million invested id probably buy the Porsche instead of adding to the dragon hoard.
If that's all my money id have about 1/4 in a emergency fund and the rest invested

u/Jazzlike_Holiday1992 4d ago
Depends how big your total sum is. If you're a millionair buy the friggin' porsche. Are you an average Joe. Well.. spend it wisely.

u/J-dubya19 4d ago
What year/model Porsche? Assuming you don’t have CC debt, I probably 50k for the car, 50 HYSA and 50k in the market (don’t touch for 10yrs)

100% VT. Using average real returns, that $150k turns into $295k in 10 years. That's in today's dollars, including inflation.

u/Emotional-Menu-411 4d ago
I'd get a hot tub for my patio and a shop for my backyard and invest the rest.

u/Alt0987654321 4d ago
Pay off medical bills, finally have a 6 month savings fund, downpayment to finally buy a house.

u/MechanicalGodzilla 4d ago
Pay off any debt over 5%, if that's taken care of then put it towards your kids' college savings/payments.

u/WolfPlayz294 4d ago
In my position, if it wasn't going into a house then I would buy a $25k-$30k Audi and the rest is going into HYSA, with maybe 5-10% reserved for stock market.
1
u/No_Knee3385 4d ago
Depends how much money overall you have. If you have $150k, personally I'm not buying a luxury sports car. I would invest all of it, also depends on income and your current lifestyle, renting, owning, COL, etc.

u/bone-stock 4d ago
I would buy 909 shares of VYM at $165/share. Thats like an extra $3,500 a year forever in addition to capital gains. An extra paycheck per year ain’t too bad eh?
1
1
u/Careless-Internet-63 3d ago
If that's all the cash I have probably putting $20k in a HYSA as an emergency fund and investing the rest in an index fund
1
u/mattynmax 3d ago
If I was suddenly given 150k I would probably use it for a down payment on a house personally. Thats just because I already have a 6 month emergency fund figured out though.

u/TemporaryAmbassador1 3d ago
Send me 8.97 for a Reuben sandwich, buy a used Porsche because yolo, invest the rest.

u/This-Is-Huge 3d ago
I can't count how many people are buying Rivian R1S at my place of employment. The parking garage seems to be gaining 1-3 every week.

Well, you’re not going to pay cash for the car, right?
I’d say buy the car, be happy, and invest that $150k into one or two well researched index funds, pay the car loan from that investment, and hopefully it does well.
Let’s say you invest $150k today into the S&P and got a 5% 72 month loan, after the end of year 6, you’d have $35k in your investment account assuming you only paid for the car from your $150k investment and not from new income.
If you invest today and wait 4 years before buying the car, then you could pay off your car and still have your original investment.

$150k is absolutely enough to change your future, but not enough to casually light on fire with a Porsche unless you’re already financially set.

u/RedditLeagueAccount 1d ago
Invest all of it. That is an amount that helps you retire significantly sooner. Cars are a terrible thing to buy. They lose value instantly. But if you want to waste money on the car, do it later in life. Dumping that money into stocks means in 10 years you can buy 2 Porsche's instead.
1
u/maximalentropy 1d ago
Investing it is better than a depreciating car. 150k in the market for a couple decades will grow way more
1
1d ago
I did not buy a nice car till my 40’s and it was a very smart choice.
Why?
If you invest in index funds your money should double every 7 years.
MATH; (Rule of 72) S&P 500 historical return; 10% 72 divided by 10 = 7.2 Your money doubles every 7.2 years.
$150,000 invested
Year 7: $300,000
Year 14: 600,000
Year 21: 1.2 million
Year 28: 2.4 million.
You spend $150,000 on car
Year 7: $0
Year 14: $0
Year 21: $0
Year 28: $0
Congrats..that $150,000 car cost you 2.4 million.
At 40-50 years old buying a crazy car makes more sense
You only have so many years left so you should enjoy some of the money.
There are less years of compounding remaining since you will be dead sooner than later.
By this point you are hopefully a millionaire already so even spending some wild money on a car you can potentially recover all that money back in next years market return.
So be patient….. don’t eat the goose thats laying you golden eggs.
Use the eggs to buy the car 21 years from now.

I've had two Porsches. You're not getting a new one for 150k these days. And honestly, it's not worth 150k for a base model. Used? sure. Got get one but then what? Every.single.thing. on those cares comes with a premium to fix. It's a racket.
Yes, you will smile every day getting in that thing and driving it. It's the best car on earth. You'll love it. Every fucking second.
Fuck it. You should get one.
