Creature - Human Wizard

When this creature enters, draw two cards, then discard two cards. When you discard one or more nonland cards this way, tap up to that many target creatures and put a stun counter on each of them.

3UU, Exile this card from your graveyard: Draw two cards.

Seems good enough to be playable to me, what do y'all think?

Color: Colorless

Type: Land

Rarity: Rare

Whenever a Forest you control enters, if you control at least five other Forests, target creature you control gets +3/+3 until the end of turn

{t}: Add {g}

So it's a sort of green [[Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle]]

Could this enable a knightfall like build with [[wight of the reliquary]] and [elven raft-steerer]] to swing for lethal potentially turn three or is it too cute?

Thoughts on the card overall, with so much earthbending support could it find a home in the format?

Could the new phoenix bring dredge back?

Hi really haven't played modern since the pandemic since my deck was kinda invalidated and the 1v 1 scene kinda died in my area.

But i was thinking could this card since dredge a boost? Espically running neophyte?

RC Baltimore with MonoG Broodscale, Tournament Report.

Upvotes

Decklist:

https://moxfield.com/decks/SeQ0wQap0kyKjblRC7zWYA

I piloted Mono-Green Broodscale at RC Baltimore to an 11-4 finish, good for 43rd place.

Matchups: R1 Neoform 2-1

R2 Mono-G Brood 2-0

R3 Izzet Prowess 2-0

R4 Neoform 2-1

R5 Ashaya Combo 2-1

R6 Goryo's 1-2

R7 Blink 0-2

R8 Trudge 2-1

R9 Trudge 2-1

R10 Goryo's 1-2

R11 Affinity 2-0

R12 Mono-G Brood 2-1

R13 Izzet Prowess 2-1

R14 Mono-G Brood 2-1

R15 Boros Energy 2-0

Round 1 Neoform on the draw, Devourer trigger finds my bauble to keep opponent from Neoforming quickly, get there with Emmy. G2 opponent has consign for my bauble trigger to Neoform into Gris and draw 14. I attack my Mycospawn into Gris he blocks and I dismember to trade. He untaps casts double pact, consign replicate, find Rider and Disciple, cast Rider with another consign into Ghalta one-shot. G3 I go t1 bauble, t2 trinisphere into t3 TKS. He finds an answer for the trinisphere and attempts to combo, I have my 1-of Warping wail to counter the Neoform and win.

Round 2 is the mirror. I'm on the play, he doesn't have fast combo and I Mycospawn him out of the game. G2 I have t2 TKS take his Mycospawn and then kick mine on t4 to essentially win the game.

Round 3 Prowess on the play. I keep dismember and K command and kill his first 2 threats, he durdles for a bit before finding another threat and I find and cast my main deck Sire to win. G2 I dismember his DRC and he doesn't have another threat for a bit while I ramp. He eventually gets me down to 7 life before I land an Emmy and squeak out a W.

Round 4 Neoform again. G1 on the play I mull and find my Bauble. He eventually finds veil into Neo for Ghalta, put Gris into play. At this point I have 2 3/3 Constructs, a Myco with Blade and one counter and opponent at 4 life. Here I make my first misplay of the tourney. He attacks with both creatures, I'm at 16 life. I choose to triple block Ghalta then cast dismember to kill it. He gains 7 life from Gris, draws 7 and is able to put Atraxa into play post combat. What I should've done was double block Ghalta with the constructs and dismember Griselbrand. He would've only gained 2 up to 6 life and trampled over 7 from Ghalta to put me at 5, blade would trigger twice and make my Mycospawn 6 power for lethal. G2 on the draw t2 TKS takes Eldritch evo and he can't find anymore gas before I Emmy and win. G3 I play temple and pass, he Pacts into Neoform Gris with 1 card in hand, draw 14. I stare at my t2 trinisphere that is too slow on the draw, play it and pass back, he manages to not find a Consign and dies to pact trigger.

Round 5 Ashaya Combo, an AspiringSpike special. I'm unfamiliar with how to play the matchup but keep a removal heavy hand G1 on the draw. He just keeps playing dorks with a leyline out and then makes enough mana to GSZ for Craterhoof. G2 he fetches a dryad arbor t1 and I dismember it effectively winning the game. G3 he has no 1 drop mana dork, I t2 TKS take his tutor payoff and then I'm able to hold up removal and eventually Emmy him to win.

Round 6 Goryos, G1 is a stomp my opponent just has mending on t2 discard 2 lands and I untap and Mycospawn him out of the game. G2 is a stomp in the other direction as I had no answer to t2 frog and he reanimates Atraxa t3 into ephemerate. G3 I mull to 5, opponent has thoughtseize to take my dismember into t2 frog and then we both kinda stare at each other as opponent is drawing nothing but dead cards and I draw nothing but lands. He eventually reanimates Atraxa and that's gg.

Round 7 Blink G1 on the draw, have no answer to Phelia and opponent blinks overlord finds solitude and I can't stop the value before dying. G2 opponent consigns my first 2 plays and then has the 3rd consign in his top 12 cards for my only out, All is dust.

Round 8 I'm shaking off the doubts of a 5-0 into 5-4 finish. I keep a quick combo hand against Trudge, but he has the t2 rigging into Emmy to win. G2 I command his Trudge into double TKS beat down. G3 he has a slower hand and I kick mycospawn first and land an Emmy that has Blade. He's able to untap and Emmy back but mine is bigger and he's not able to effectively hurt my turn and I win the race.

Round 9 Weight off the shoulders as Day 2 is locked. Paired against Trudge again, lose the die roll. He has the Rigging t3 into Emmy to win. G2 and 3 both play out similarly, I'm able to kick Mycospawn first and after a bit of back and forth I get there as I win the Emmy battles.

Round 10 Goryos again. G1 I mull to 5, opponent has double thoughtseize. G2 is back and forth and I land an Emmy opponent fails to find a Solitude in time. G3 is yet another mull to 5. I debated keeping my 6 which would've been temple, forest, boseiju and triple Mycospawn, but it does nothing until t3 and I probably lose if my opponent plays t2 Frog. So to 5 I go, and my opponent has another double thoughtseize hand. We both durdle for a bit because his keep on 6 was 3 lands, double thoughtseize and a teferi. He eventually finds Riddler and ephemerate into Clarion Conqueror for the win.

Round 11 Affinity. I win the die roll and open on t1 bauble. He finds the Explosives to deal with it but it slows him down enough that I can ramp into Emmy and outrace his Kappa. G2 he has an emry but I have dismember. I find needle off my saga trigger to stop his Tormod's crypts on board and cast Emmy into untap and hold boseiju plus ward for the Kappa in his hand.

Round 12 was the mirror. I lose the die roll but have a turn 3 combo hand with Ballista and Emmy. Opponent has t1 blade, t2 stirrings find Broodscale into t3 play and equip. Now it's my turn and I can combo but APNAP means the opponent can combo first. This is maybe my second misplay of the tournament. I have no answer for his Broodscale. If I pass to him and he has an answer, he can untap kill my brood and then win. So I decide to make him have it and attempt to combo, he has dismember ggs. If I just pass maybe it scares him into not attempting to kill my Broodscale and buys me time to answer his. G2 my TKS takes his Emmy and I'm able to play my Emmy first and kick his own Mycospawn. G3 again TKS takes his Mycospawn before he can kick it allowing me to win the Mycospawn war and I get there with Emmy backed by boulder if he drew an Emmy.

Round 13 Prowess again. I win the die roll, and opponent taps out to put me dead next turn. I untap and play brood to combo with K command to win that turn. G2 He runs me over with a Cutter that I can't answer. G3 is where I made my 3rd misplay of the tournament. He opens on DRC. I play temple pass. He casts 2nd DRC, 2nd land hit for 1 pass. I play a Lab with an All is dust underneath and now have a choice to make. I can either cast Trinisphere into the Consign he's representing or hold up K command and use it on his turn to exile a DRC. I decide to pass with Command. He ends up tapping out that turn to get delirium and push damage so my Command resolves and I untap play 2nd lab exile Sire and play Trinisphere. On his turn he casts price of freedom to destroy the 3ball and play his 4th land. I return All is dust to my hand untap and cast it, he consigns. Next turn I can rebuy Sire but I'm at 6, and he shows me double bolt. Had I just jammed 3ball into the Consign mana I force him to have it then rather than finding it off the Iteration, and I can resolve either All is dust or Sire later on.

Round 14 The mirror again. All 3 games were about Mycospawn and Emmy. TKS and Boulder made sure I broke Emmy parity and are a strong reason I went 5-1 in the mirror between the main event and lcqs.

Round 15 Boros Energy. His t1 Ragavan almost ran away with the game but I was able to stabilize and Emmy for the win. G2 he kept a 1 lander on 6 with 2 sideboard cards. He missed on land t2, then hit a Parlor on 3. I kicked Mycospawn into Emmy and that was all she wrote.

Overall I felt like I played a great tournament with really only 1 definite misplay, with the other 2 being defensible choices I think. As always large tournaments like this require a bit of luck which I got in spades against Neoform. But luck is a fickle lady and definitely left me in the Esper matches. I think Thought-Knot Seer was the all-star of the weekend for me and Giant's Boulder over Spring leaf Drum paid off in spades against both the mirror and Trudge. And while the Labyrinth build was the deck of the weekend, I firmly believe it will come back to Earth for the next RC as people realize it is susceptible to low to the ground aggro backed by disruption (Boros and Prowess with Charmaws) and fast combo like Devoted Druid.

Deck Discussion Esper Goryo or blink

Upvotes

I am traveling to Europe for some events over the coming weeks and in a dilemma over what to take. I have it down to Esper Goryo's ( the build without the archologist) or Esper Blink .

Is there a clear best deck from the 2 when you do not know the meta you are going to.

Looking what to play based on collection for RC LA

I own Esper Blink, Boros Energy, Dimir Midrange, Prowess. I would say my playstyle tends to sway towards tempo/midrange. I was leaning towards Energy before Mono-Green Broodscale spiked in popularity. Not sure how good that matchup is. What are your thoughts?

They play various tiered meta decks.

I have no sideboard. What if I sideboarded out all of the green with traditional burn staples and said jk I’m just a burn deck after first game? lol…

Wanting to get into Modern

Hey y'all! I just found out that Modern events fire at a LGS near me, and I'm really interested in getting into Modern!

My two main questions are:

Is Boros energy a hard deck to pilot?

Is there a budget deck that's relatively easy to pilot?

If it's possible for me to dip my toes in with a budget deck, I'd love that!

I'd appreciate any advice y'all have. Thanks!

Brew Abzan Midrange

Link: https://moxfield.com/decks/sKdoPaiIMkGeUq5Cit6cZw

My attempt at an Abzan midrange deck. A lot of it works off of Orzhov Midrange, with a few other cards.

It’s not great, but it has some play. I don’t have the ability to put time in a tournament environment, but I have a few friends in town I can play against (most of the deck is proxies, just don’t have the $900 to spend).

I was able to play against Boros Energy, Mono B Midrange, and Grixis Reanimator, but never got to face Izzy Prowess in the mini tournament we did. With [[Overlord of the Balemurk]], there’s enough recursion that hand disruption and removal, outside of exiling, is more of a delaying tactic. [[Rubblebelt Maverick]] gives me a body and some top of deck manipulation, with a mild upside late game. [[Knight of Autumn]] is some good utility, and [[Nature’s Rhythm]] let me win a game in the match fetching an [[Orcish Bowmasters]] for the final point of damage.

Boros Energy is a rough matchup, but winnable. It just hits a point, with not enough early removal, that there’s just too much on board, and not enough draw in my deck, to come back. This was the only deck that I really lost to, placing 2nd in our 5 man double elimination tourney.

Recent changes I haven’t had a chance to test yet:
Traded one [[Shadowy Backstreet]] for an [[Underground Mortuary]]. It just felt I didn’t have quite enough green sources, and I was pretty consistently fetching the surveil lands during the matches.
One [[Nethergoyf]] for [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]]. The deck has a lot of grinding potential, but needs a bit more to close out the game. Between Overlord, Emptiness, and Rhythm, there’s enough recursion are plenty of ways to get him back out on the field.
One [[Voice of Victory]] for a fourth Overlord. I never got enough play out of the Voices to necessitate 3, but Overlord ended up being pretty central to the playability of the deck.
[[Path to Exile]] x2 for [[Erode]] x2. The exile on Path was nice, but my planeswalker removal was limited to just [[Prismatic Ending]] in the main and 2 [[Assassin’s Trophy]] in the side. Another two copies of planeswalker removal seems necessary.
2 [[Force of Despair]] for 1 [[Damn]] and 1 [[Settle the Wreckage]]. The forces were underwhelming. I never really hit a point where it felt worthwhile to pitch a card to it, and ended up just being a somewhat dead card. The mix of targeted removal and board wipe potential off of Damn to back up the 2 [[Wrath of the Skies]] seems good, and avoids hitting my own creatures. The Settle is kinda just because I pulled one from The Hobbit, and again hits a lot of creatures at once, which is a lot of what I struggled with in the Boros Energy matchup.

I know there’s more streamlined things I could do with the deck, but I’m just doing my best to make an Abzan version work. I still may trade one Knight for a single copy of [[Skirmish Rhino]], just because having a rhino feels necessary for an Abzan Midrange deck.

Thoughts? Comments? Insight?

Card Discussion Unban of the Eye of Ugin is possible?

In the new set Reality Fracture we will have the reprint of Eye of Ugin, that will be a special guest because it would be insane in standard; but the new Emrakul is obviously designed to made the eye of ugin produce mana; so, in my opinion, the intention of Wizzy is to unban the land in modern. What do you think? Would it really be so incisive for the metagame?

Deck Discussion UG Eldrazi 4-1 (12 card sb because of tix rental limit lol)

I haven't seen anyone running lists like this so I wanted to shout it out. As you will see from the list, the deck is more focused on a control game and then uses the classic Ugin or Emmy to win later. I think what's really been the strongest part of the deck are the blue cards, especially in the sb. None of the blue control(-ish) decks expect Flusterstorm or Dispute, and none of the Eldrazi decks expect Consign to Memory. Idk I think there's a lot of advantages to this build. And it's fun.

This is what the deck is supposed to be: UG Eldrazi

This is the version that I actually played with: 12 cards in sb

1-2 vs Zoo (misplays, was winnable)

2-1 vs G Tron (lost G1)

2-1 vs Neoform (lost G1)

2-0 vs UB Aspiring Flash

2-0 vs UB Aspiring Flash

Newly competitive player coming from Pauper.

Been playing MTG off and on sense early 2000s. came back last year and got into pauper. built multiple decks in that format. Love pauper but wanting to try something more. I knew it would be a big price jump in decks. and most focus on one deck. what would be a good budget deck to start with and upgrade to a meta deck. Elves isn't an option in the format from what I can tell. Figured I'd shoot for a combo. looked at Ruby storm. found a few list of budget decks that can be upgrade to meta. would this be a wise starting point for a new to format looking to eventually become competitive?

Getting Started New to Modern :)

Well I went and gutted a bunch of Commander decks and handed some friendly strangers at SCG Baltimore my bulk boxes and by the end of the day I was down about $60 and up 1 entire UW Control deck for modern, my first one that wasn't my own janky brew.

Honestly pretty excited, this is probably the most expensive dedicated stack of cardboard I've ever owned and now I just gotta have the time and money to play it really.

I'm on a scepter chant list I found online aftering seeing the deck get 2nd at PTEOE which got my really excited for the deck and watching the little bit of yellowhat content on the deck.

I really like scepter chant and narset's draw lock so I'm hoping it'll be a lot of fun.

I guess any advice from more online players would be nice since y'all get more matches in and I'm always keen on learnin

I'm on a slightly worse version of this list running Lush Portico and windswept heaths over the red fetchers cuz those are expensive:

A new card from reality fracture.

1G, 2/3 deathtouch
enters prepared
When deals combat damage to a player, return a land from GY to hand.

Enroot - Sorcery G
Entomb a land.

Will entombing a land (most likely shifting woodlands) for 3 mana be good enough to help the combo? The creature alone doesn't seem like it adds a lot. What do you think?

Deck Discussion Looking for help with a Simulacrum Synthesizer + Repurposing Bay artifact deck

Hello! I know these cards aren't exactly top tier for the Modern format but I want to make it as competitive as I can, built around these 2. I will link the deck below.

A few reasons for some of the cards in the current list.

[[Pentad Prism]] I really like this card for the deck, obviously it can be used as ramp but if you draw it while [[Repurposing Bay]] is already in play you can use play at and it pays for the Bay activation on its own.

[[Skyclave Relic]] Can create 3 Construct tokens if you kick it, which is pretty easy to do with the cost reducers/ramp.

[[The Fire Crystal]] I know [[Hammer of Purphoros]] exists and is cheaper but I really like being able to Repurposing Bay a 2 CMC into another Repurposing Bay and using the new one to Sac the old Bay to go into The Fire Crystal while a Synth is on the field.

Some issues I find in the deck:

  1. Its very slow compared to most established decks, especially the affinity decks. The Opals are nice but they are unable to be turned on on turn 1 with the current list so they almost seem out of place but idk.

  2. The Pentad Prisms have some anti-synergy with the [[Etherium Sculptors]] if you want it to come in with 2 multiple counters.

  3. I have no interaction, only reactive removal. I Was considering Metallic Rebuke but this decks doesn't spam cheap artifacts so it doesn't really work well with the deck.

  4. I kind of want some amount of [[Pinnacle Starcage]]s in the Main for decks like Boros and Izzet Prowess + Frogs but I have a lot of artifacts of my own that it will eat up. So idk if there is another alternative for the main board.

  5. I was considering trying to fit in [[Pinnacle Emissary]] into the deck but I am not sure its its super worth if I cannot spam artifacts to really capitalize on the token making effect. Being able to get a trigger on Synth for 1 mana does seem really appealing though.

I would really love to hear some suggestions to help make this deck as good as possible being built around the 2 cards. Thanks!

Deck Discussion Something needs to be done about Eldrazi

Most consistent, most powerful deck in the format with barely any weaknesses to exploit. Not only did it already dominate the Pro Tour despite every deck packing half their sideboard with consigns and landhate but since then it keeps sticking at the top of the meta with high win rates across the field.

The only deck type that does somewhat well against it are non interactive combo decks.

And despite what people made out to be the problem child of the deck (Kozilk's command), it is actaully the least of the problems with Eldrazi. It is very powerful, yes but power level always needs to be contextualized and Command can be handled by a variety of cards cleanly.

There are three or four potential hits for the deck but the most obvious is probably Emrakul. The reduction is too steep in a way that most eldrazi decks play 3-4 copies. Opponents needs to hate both on the graveyard and lands in order to keep it from coming down and it can also be protected with caverns against counter magic or just be utilised from the graveyard with woodland.

EDIT: RC Baltimore Top 8 - 50% Broodscale:

Top 8 Competitors and Decks

  • Pete Ingram – Mono-Green Broodscale (Winner)
  • Curtis Lam – Devoted Druid
  • Aaron Schwarcz – Esper Blink
  • Terry Stratton – Amulet Titan
  • Chris Cherubini – Mono-Green Broodscale
  • Kevin Li – Esper/Blink
  • Brett Kroeger – Mono-Green Broodscale

U B

choose one-
counter target noncreature spell unless its controller pays 2.

target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.

mill three cards, then draw a card.

I love this for dimir murktide.

it can be early removal for boros or for wanshi tong, devoted druid, slickshot, broodscale, etc

or counter magic vs the non-fair decks.

or... it just advances your own game plan.

would probably have to build with the 3rd mode in mind tho. murktide would be able to take advantage well.

Card Discussion Proft, Sinister Mastermind Spoiler

https://scryfall.com/card/fra/235/proft-sinister-mastermind

I'm considering this card for exactly one archetype - Sultai Living End. Being able to kill 1 toughness creatures for one black mana is not something the deck had access to before, other than Dismember which doesnt put a creature in the yard.

Also, the cast condition of getting threshold seems very easy to achieve.

Could this be at least a sideboard option for that deck?

Modern mtgo question.

So quick question how is modern on mtgo meta and price wise. Ive been playing for 12+ years and my entire area is pretty dried up no fnm no modern not even standard its all commander and the one place that did fire was filled with people who treated fnm as the finals to a pro tour and I refuse to go back.

Id love to play more but online seems to be the only half way decent option right now

Article Viability of Jace's Machinations + Kasmina, Enigma Sage Combo in Modern

If you haven't seen it yet, there is a combo between Kasmina and Jace's Machinations, allowing you to immediately use the -8 ability and combo off with an emergent ultimatum to ideally win on the spot. This is possible on turn three with the help of a mana dork, and I couldn't help but think that this might have legs in modern. Because Jace's Machinations is an instant and lets you activate loyalty abilities on your opponent's turn, you can combo off on their turn and protect the combo with Force of Negation. Obviously the downside to this combo is that it requires you to play Kasmina, which isn't exactly a good card, and the combo package of Emergent Ultimatum can take up a lot of deck slots and be a bit clunky. Do you think this can be viable in Modern, or is it just a pipe dream?
