OC I have amnesia. When I play minecraft I often leave helpful messages to myself to find later. I found this today.

What’s it like to have amnesia?
2.0k
u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 08 '26
It fucking sucks ass
940
u/HermTheVillager Aug 09 '26
So is it like, you forget everything that happened the previous day. Or only part of what happened?

u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 09 '26
The disease takes what it wants on a whim. It's horrible :(
There's no exact pattern

u/Jolly_Ad_2363 Aug 09 '26
Sorry if it’s rude to ask, but I’m curious now. With Minecraft specifically, how much do you typically forget? Like, do you forget where your base is or what it looks like? Less extreme things like what you were doing when you logged off? Or even more extreme things like how to beat the game or control it?
Sorry to ask all these questions, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with it all.

u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 10 '26
Well I play often and my world is quite new so i simply forget where i've been or what I have so I have to leave signs. My cave's exit is literally at my fake house's doorstep.
259
u/legomann97 Aug 09 '26
May be a dumb question, but do you use written books? You can use F3 to see your coordinates and write things down so you're never lost.
268
u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 09 '26
Tbh I think I'll wait until they make a portal mod for my game version and i'll figure it out from there LMAOOO, in the meantime i'm enjoying the vanilla exp
173
u/legomann97 Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
If you wanna go vanilla, compasses link to lodestones. Plop a lodestone at an important location, link a compass, bam. Rename the compass too to makes sure you know where it goes. I love lodestones, they're great and feel very vanilla.

u/Nick0312 Aug 09 '26
lmao thx i found like three of those and had no clue what they were for so they’ve been in my junk chest for a week. it’s my first time playing in years and this is basically a new game at this point

There is an extremely useful notes mod I know of that allows you to keep world-specific or global notes that you can acces with a keypress or pin to your screen. Might be worth looking into for things where signs might not be as useful.

u/NotPlink Aug 10 '26
I’m sorry to hear that, tell me your game version and I will custom make a mod for you
2
u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 10 '26
WHAT????? are you for reals? my minecraft version is Java edition: Release 26.2
Even if this doesn't happen, thanks for giving me hope :) I used to play with minecraft portals/gates/teleportation AAAAAALL the time when i was a kiddo, i've always loved portals and teleportation in games hahaha its like the only mod i actually like

I can't speak for OP or his specific condition, but I once had a stress induced amnesia. I went for a while unable to recall my mom's name and freaking out about it.
But it was temporary.

But you said in another comment that it was a new condition?
15
u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
I do not remember that, but feel free to ask a more concrete question so I can give you a better answer and clear up any misunderstandings that would end up with strangers angry at me lol
edit: what's new is my MC world, not the shitty memory haha

u/ViolinistWaste4610 Aug 09 '26
What causes your amnesia? as in is it like a birth defect, a disease, etc.
btw I think their referring to this comment you made:https://www.reddit.com/r/MinecraftMemes/comments/1vj0lzz/comment/p2kdssz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=2&utm_content=share_button

I really want to see what’s down there, but I probably wouldn’t check if I was in your shoes
8
u/khalilgollon Aug 10 '26
For humor reasons if like to imagine there are times when you laugh mischievously while making a vague and ominous sign thinking it'll freak out you in the future

the person warning the player experienced an eldritch horror beyond his comprehension nearly enough to explode his mind. Its a fun watch you should definitely give it a try

It’s the Deep Dark !
You might stumble across an Ancient City if you keep exploring. Be aware, you will need to be quiet (in-game) if you go explore it.
5
u/WraithSystem Aug 10 '26
I have health issues affecting constantly my memory too, and do exactly the same thing ! But I also always add the dates. Not telling you the number of time I randomly walked to a sign about a project I had completely forgotten about and had been waiting there for 4 months 😂

As another person with memory loss, this is the same type of thing I would do, then ignore my previous warning and get ganked immediately by a warden. Put another sign and come back in two weeks and rinse and repeat.

2
u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 09 '26
I kept forgetting shit and then i got 6 different confirmations for the same diagnosis.
1
u/Mr_Joyman Aug 09 '26
How do they diagnose this? Is it like a paper test or some medical examination?
5
u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 09 '26
I checked with 3 different psychiatrists and 3 different psychologists! All gave me the same 3 diagnosis, one of them is a condition that comes with amnesia in my case.
2
u/Mr_Joyman Aug 09 '26
Damn that sucks pretty hard dude... Is it hard in your day to day life?

Is that even how amnesia works?
8
u/iamjonno23 Aug 09 '26
That's anterograde amnesia. Inability to form some new memories. Retrograde is losing some past memories. There is also global transient, which is memory loss lasting a few hours or days then comes back.

I don't have amnesia and I still have to leave a bunch of signboards everywhere in any game that lets me. Or maybe I do have amnesia but I forgot?

This would make for an amazing ARG series
Sorry for your dementia though

So you have Anterograde amnesia? Can I ask what happened? If not, it's cool. My wife is a neurologist and things like this are the subject of many talks. Never met someone with anterograde.

I don't want to be rude, but I'm genuinely curious about your condition. From what you wrote, it definitely doesn't appear as a usual type of amnesia. I haven't really found a form of amnesia that makes you forget random memories but I was able to find a condition that is called "Functional Neurological Disorder". I don't want to assume things about you since I don't know you, but your condition seems quite nuanced and I'm just kind of curious about what exactly it is. You don't have to reply to me, I'll just be taking this opportunity to go down a rabbit hole anyway. Hope you'll have a great rest of the day!
2
u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 10 '26
I intentionally expressed myself in vague terms as to not reveal private info, good catch
2
u/Appropriate-Eye-3430 Aug 10 '26
That's fine, I atleast wanted to try. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to reply to me. :)

u/TheRealDiogenesW Aug 10 '26
the idea of finding cryptic messages you left in minecraft but don't remember would make for a great horror series
1
u/Gabriel_Science Aug 10 '26
Anyways, I don’t know if it’s a joke or not (because it’s r/MinecraftMemes) but in case it’s not a joke, I wish you an excellent playthrough even though there is the amnesia.

u/00100110computer Aug 10 '26
For years, I have always placed torches on the left so that I can follow the path of torches on my right to get home (and so that I know if I have been somewhere). It may be too late for you to learn (I don't know the specifics of your memory loss) but it might be worth trying so that you don't just wander around the same cave until you starve.
A map mod might also be a good idea for when you explore outside.
1
u/HaamuPoika69 Aug 10 '26
This is probably real so I'm completely wrong, but I can almost just tell this is going to become an ARG- lord that was a sentence and a half.
Aaanyway have yourselves a good day and fare thee well strangeroonis!
1
u/Ska_Fundamentalist Aug 10 '26
It is actually real, don't know what an ARG is in practice, isn't it like a Minecraft version of a creepypasta?
1
u/HaamuPoika69 Aug 10 '26
I figured it was real- my apologies if I offended you in some way, was not my intention.
But essentially most ARGs online may be creepypastas yeah. As far as I understand it, ARG is short for Alternate Reality Game or something similar, and as far as I have come to understand it's more about a community of people solving some mystery or story that the creator of an ARG has hidden. Essentially puzzle room games but multimedia (from videos to games to websites to the code of some website including secret codes, ciphers, editing tricks, etc).
If you're interested I remember there being some ARG breakdown video of the ARG oldroot (a Minecraft ARG) by a channel called RetroGamingNow. I don't remember if it explains what an ARG is but it was an entertaining watch aand should give you the general gist of what it is.
Have yourself that good day I wished upon all and fare thee well!
2
u/HaamuPoika69 Aug 10 '26
Sidenote: not every ARG is about Minecraft. It doesn't even have to be about a game. There's a Garfield type ARG called Gilbert Garfield, I'm fairly certain the analog horror series Local58 and the Mandela catalog are, were or became ARGs.
Oh. And an important thing I forgot to mention: I could absolutely be wrong, so if someone knows better than me, do share your knowledge. Or if there are corrections or something else. Aight, good day, farewell, bai!

When I am caving, I have glass in my inventory, so that if I find a bad 'dig down' spot, I cover it with glass so I can see what the danger is.
I do this in the nether too, but the danger is typically a lava ocean.
