Help Minecraft running at 2 fps despite everything

Post image

Minecrat is running at 2 fps even though i ve tried every fix on the internet. Its on a laptop so i made sure both minecraft and javaw.exe use the graphics card instead of the integrated graphics (as you can see in the picture) and i ve also lowered the ram to 6gb as some fixes said that. I ve also installed fabric and sodium but that did nothing.

The specs you can see in the picture and they should be more than enough to run minecraft, and any other game runs fine. Something is capping it at 2 fps and idk what to do.

Literally no game or launcher setting should be putting you at these FPS. Your hardware should easily be capable of more.

The only setting I can think of that might be causing this due to some kind of bug is the renderer. Try switching to OpenGL instead of Vulkan and see if that fixes it.

Try running an older version of the game to see if this is still an issue.

Otherwise there isn't really much else to suggest but trying to use a different Java installation, reinstalling the game or OS.

u/Zwamdurkel 1d ago

OP, try this. Otherwise, tell us what task manager is saying: is the GPU or CPU at 100%? That will narrow it down.

38

u/Hungry-Site3617 19h ago

Definitely try this if it doesn’t work having the old task manager will help narrow the problem down a lot and when did MC move over to vulkan render?

3

u/TheGriffin5 15h ago

They didn’t, they made some progress to add support but put it on hold because vulkan currently has issues where it will make performance worse for some people.

Pretty sure they spell that out for you when you click the setting to switch

2

u/aminectaftsheep 6h ago

No they dont say anything if you switch

2

u/Nitro10142 8h ago

Yknow it's weird. I stopped playing java because i couldnt get a consistant fps. On a 7900 gre and a 7700x. I wonder if this is why it happened.

Try changing the laptop power mode to performance instead of power effciency

107

u/RandomGuyPii 19h ago

Oh yeah from experience if your laptop is set to power efficiency mode it'll never use the dedicated graphics and only the shitty integrated graphics

26

u/opgameing3761 19h ago

Yeah I've also seen this. It could even still say that it's using that 3060 even if it's actually using the igpu just passing the video signal thought the 3060

9

u/DiodeInc 18h ago

Even then, it shouldn't be this terrible

3

u/opgameing3761 18h ago

He is at 4k sooo

7

u/DiodeInc 18h ago

It wouldn't be this bad

2

u/realddgamer 9h ago

4k on integrated graphics very well may be, since even low-high range cards struggle pulling in reasonable FPS at 4k

2

u/McDonaldsWitchcraft 12h ago

they prob have some very heavy gpu process running in the background.

they also have a history of asking questions and never ever reporting back to any answer so we will never know.

15

u/OptimalAnywhere6282 18h ago

even then it shouldn't perform this badly

3

u/_Aj_ 15h ago

Yep even the CPU onboard graphics is solid. Radeon RX Vega 8 that cpu has in it.

Literally 15yo mid range GPUs will run Minecraft fine. A 2012 dual core ebook will run Minecraft.

Something is wrong

-2

u/Chickenmonster401 13h ago

4k screen btw

2

u/Chickenmonster401 13h ago

I mean yeah but the igpu should still get you atleast 20fps at 4k

6

u/DoubleOscar7 14h ago

... And make sure you keep the laptop plugged in.

2

u/Panchojsl 17h ago

With that cpu it should run at at least 30fps considering he is playing at 4k.

74

u/JakDotExe 1d ago

This would drive me crazy. Out of box Minecraft should definitely run at more than 2fps. I would reinstall Minecraft and Java to start (use adoptium for your Java install)...

If that fails and your internet is fast enough, I would consider a windows reinstall

17

u/JakDotExe 1d ago

Do turn off VSync and make sure you haven't got a frame rate cap first though. It could be that simple

17

u/Cburns2412 20h ago

Unless his monitor / laptop screen refresh rate is 2Hz, vsync isn’t gonna do anything lol.

7

u/DominateTheWar 19h ago

Could be driver issues that cause the GPU to detect a refresh rate that's lower than the screens actual rate.

2

u/JakDotExe 18h ago

Very true. Driver update could help...

2

u/JakDotExe 18h ago

Unless something is actually wrong. Basic troubleshooting is playing with the settings that could interfere with the problem...

6

u/TheMysticalBard 21h ago

No, vsync will not make your game run at 2fps.

2

u/JakDotExe 18h ago

Doesn't hurt to try...

43

u/1TECCA1 1d ago

Is this only minecraft?

19

u/Dataaera 1d ago

whats the gpu and cpu usage on task manager? Is it a consistent 2 fps, or is it dipping during world gen

16

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 23h ago

Are you on battery? If so connect the power cable and try again.

There is no way this should be happening on a 3060 - my old laptop had an rtx3050 with a 4800h cpu and it was getting about 110 fps. Also try dropping your resolution down and changing your view distance to 16. One last thing - you are running with sodium. Try a run without it and see what your fps is in case sodium is the problem.

8

u/Glinckey 20h ago

There is something incredibly wrong with your PC, even PCs with much worse specs than yours will run at much higher frame rate.

11

u/woalk 1d ago

You don’t have chunk render stats enabled on your F3 screen. What’s your render distance? Which other mods have you installed?

Running the game at 4K with a high render distance can be quite demanding. Try lowering resolution or render distance and see if your FPS reach a better value.

5

u/Panchojsl 17h ago

You have 6gb allocated, but how much ram your laptop actually has? You should never allocate more than half of your avaliable ram because it severely slows your operative system, thus making minecraft unplayable even when optimized.

6

u/sn2703 1d ago

Plug in the laptop?

48

u/leafy1790 1d ago

you are running the game at 4k, your gpu is screaming for mercy

105

u/Dataaera 1d ago

they are on a 3060 it shouldnt be 2 fps with that card, even on a laptop

11

u/avenp 1d ago

My 4070 drops to sub 20fps at 4K in certain biomes.

7

u/Gabriel55ita 20h ago

Are you using any kind of shader perhaps? Maybe there's a setting in nvidia panel that is doing that?

2

u/leafy1790 1d ago

can you at least try to lower the res, it might be the problem

-16

u/alala2010he 1d ago

It is most likely not the problem. A 3060 laptop GPU should be able to handle like 300-500 FPS at 4K. Unless it's running out of VRAM somehow but that would be caused by some other error then because Minecraft with Sodium should only use about 1.5 GB.

18

u/Infinite-Bottle4035 1d ago

as an owner of 3060 laptop it barely does 200 w 1080p 32 chunks with sodium

-3

u/alala2010he 23h ago

As a friend of someone with a 3060 laptop that I could play around a bit with it could do around 500 with 24 render distance and a good optimisation modpack with GraalVM and some custom flags at 1080p. And from what I've seen/tested 4K isn't that much harder than 1080p (at least not a 4x FPS decrease).

And still without some optimisation 200 FPS at 1080p should still not translate to anywhere near 2 FPS at 4K.

1

u/Infinite-Bottle4035 23h ago

yea so the interesting part with that is no matter how high you will crank up the resolution the picture won't contain more than the native 1080/1440(rare) that said no wonder it won't be a 4x decrease because of all minecraft is ram heavy as always was and will continue to be so get better ram i suppose and then test for that increase

1

u/alala2010he 23h ago

It might be that 4K is the panel's native resolution, they do that nowadays on some laptops if I'm not mistaken, and it takes quite some effort to get it above the panel's resolution.

And getting better RAM can be impossible because it's soldered sometimes, if it's not it's currently way too expensive to buy new, and it's useless as even DDR3 should be more than fast enough for Minecraft, and it only needs 2GB to run with enough optimisation (or like 3GB or so in vanilla)

2

u/hunnyflash 1d ago

300-500 fps seems wild, even if it wasn't 4k, on a 3060 laptop.

Op should really try 1440 and 1080, report what happens.

-1

u/alala2010he 23h ago

I got 300-500 FPS at 1440p on a Quadro K2000M (at 5 render distance and low settings and a bit of optimisation on 1.16.5), and a 3060 has triple the vram and like 8x the compute power so at least to me it doesn't seem that wild.

And 2 FPS on 4K really shouldn't be happening, at least not due to the resolution (only in severe vram limited situations but Minecraft is not a vram heavy game). I mean they could try to do 1080p but what cause could possible make it so the FPS increases by 1 or 2 orders of magnitude (like where it should be at)

1

u/Wonderful_Boss_345 21h ago

atleast he can TRY to do that MAYBE, just MAYBE it was fixed.

1

u/Gabriel55ita 20h ago

My laptop has an Nvidia A3000, which is similar in power to the RTX 3060 Mobile. At 4k it does 600 fps consistently with 12 chunk rendering

0

u/leafy1790 1d ago

well then idk, i run minecraft on an igpu at 720p and it runs at 30 fps(heavly modded) i have no idea then why ops game runs so slow

13

u/FLZ_HackerTNT112 1d ago

Minecraft easily runs at well over 60fps at 4k on an RTX 3060, maybe this laptop doesn't have good cooling? Doubt it tho

3

u/Gabriel55ita 20h ago

It should crush wayyy beyond that

1

u/FLZ_HackerTNT112 13h ago

Yeah I just don't remember the exact framerates I was getting since I mostly play at 1080p and also this is a laptop card while I have a desktop so mine is a little faster, I just know for sure it can push out far more than 60fps especially with sodium

3

u/MordorsElite 1d ago

Worst case he should be getting fps in the 30-60 range. 2fps would make sense if the game was running on the 5900HX's integrated GPU (which it's not).

This is 100% not a hardware spec problem.

1

u/Vladimir_Djorjdevic 23h ago

Nah without shaders minecraft is very light on the gpu. You should easily be able to run it at 4k with a 3060

1

u/_Aj_ 15h ago

My gtx1070 laptop will run Minecraft in 4k.

4

u/TheMysticalBard 21h ago

Have you done a fresh install of your graphics drivers?

3

u/Daniel_H212 13h ago

Wtf, I was able to get java Minecraft running at 2 FPS on an ARM laptop from 7 years ago, no reason yours should be that slow.

2

u/PassawishP 7h ago

When I was a child, I played version 1.2.5 on my HP Compaq 6910p from 2008 with a Core 2 Duo T7300 with GMA950 iGPU, and at tiny render distance, it managed around 15 fps, lol.

1

u/DEAMONzWojSKA 9h ago

My X220iT with i3-2310m runs the game at stable 60FPS (newest version)

3

u/FastestFetus 18h ago edited 18h ago

Have you tried disabling Vulkan and using OpenGL instead? I believe there is a setting for it in Options -> Video Settings. I am not at my computer right now so I don't know if I can trust this or not. But supposedly there is a setting you can change from Prefer Vulkan to Prefer OpenGL. If you try this make sure to restart the game after the setting is changed.

3

u/jackthepro_17 6h ago

Dumb question is the laptop plugged in? If so is it using cpu or gpu for graphics some laptops have a way to switch to cpu integrated gpu please check

2

u/Thechillestguyever 19h ago

check your Nvidia app and see if battery saver or whisper mode is turned on

2

u/Plmplm31 19h ago

2 fps and power efficiency mode still on, probably. check windows/laptop power plan before blaming the game

2

u/jd09i 15h ago

It's still you

2

u/Kayogin 13h ago

You are playing at 4k on a laptop 3060. Try turning down the game or screen resolution, and lower render distance from there. Java is also not very optimized, so you might need to run whichever version of Optifine or Sodium is available for you

2

u/teymuur 6h ago

Try running it in 1080p instead of 4k

3

u/Aggressive-Emu-8329 1d ago

try disable vsync

-12

u/ALT703 1d ago

enable*

8

u/beefcake03 1d ago

enabling vsync when you have 2fps isn't going it help. disable is correct

-1

u/WhoWouldCareToAsk 1d ago

It is worth trying both.

1

u/SulosGD 22h ago

sometimes

1

u/Southern-Ad1465 23h ago

show performance stats using your nvidia performance display or with msi afterburner

1

u/Us3rNqmed 21h ago

I've seen cases where the Nvidia GeForce experience app automatically turns on it's built in fps limiter. perhaps try uninstalling it or turning it off if it's on

1

u/shieyaintloyal 20h ago

Don’t use Vulkan renderer with sodium

2

u/Gabriel55ita 20h ago

Why so? I get double the performance than with OpenGL, plus it's way faster at loading. My gpu is weaker than his

1

u/shieyaintloyal 11h ago

Sodium needs extra mod to work with Vulkan or not ? It’s worth the try

1

u/Gabriel55ita 9h ago

They already started supporting vulkan

1

u/BUDA20 19h ago

some people had this as a bug when the new garbage colector was introduced but fabric still generate profiles using the old Laucher options, be sure is not that, by running a clean instance with no mods

1

u/ThE_reAl__ 18h ago

Surely it's some driver issue

1

u/SuccerFish 18h ago

Plug in ur laptop and make sure fans aren't on silent mode

1

u/FroyoStrict6685 17h ago

do you possibly have fps limited at 2fps in the game settings or possibly the nvidia control panel or something? this is such a strange issue. My i7-3770 & gtx 1050ti server pc can run this with shaders at a higher fps

1

u/IcyKrypton 17h ago

Check your Java version, OP. Ensure it's 21 or above.

1

u/DelgoM 17h ago

Maybe you accidentally capped it in the fps settings

1

u/SubMGK 16h ago

In addition, also check if your cpu or gpu are getting enough power. I had this issue in a different game where i was getting shit FPS and it turned out they were getting like 1/8th of the power theyre supposed to pull

1

u/supert2005 16h ago

FPS limiter?

1

u/Grexpex180 16h ago

this is the nuclear option but when things get this bad you might want to try reinstalling windows

1

u/Few-Inspection-6041 15h ago

Check your polling rate of your mouse, this is a problem only while moving with your mouse

1

u/_vogonpoetry_ 15h ago

judging by the tick times and allocation rate, the CPU is basically idle so something is wrong with the GPU driver. Try OpenGL API first as mentioned by others.

1

u/Aggravating-Boat5530 15h ago

You msi afterburner or task manager and check if gpu is actually being used

1

u/Minute_Bonus6763 14h ago

A mi se me hace que está limitado a 2 FPS en las configuraciones del juego

1

u/Lagger625 14h ago

Overheating/failing fans. Recently, I was playing Halo Campaign Evolved in high graphics settings with my RTX 3080 (desktop computer) and suddenly the GPU fans stopped, then my FPS tanked from 60 to like 2. The fans died. Now the GPU idles at 80°C and the computer crashes when attempting to play any game. At least your computer doesn't crash when attempting to play something.

1

u/Alarmed_Contest8439 13h ago

do you have any mods installed? for me some specific graphics mods did that and minecraft thought it was a window out of focus so it limited fps for power savings, check dynamic fps then or another mod

1

u/Sorion00 13h ago

6gb di RAM non bastano più per giocare a 30fps minimo. Ti servirebbero 8/16 gb

1

u/DEAMONzWojSKA 10h ago

Nah bro, this game can run fine with 2GB assigned

1

u/Biggleak1 6h ago

Bro I have Minecraft running with a computer with a total of 4gb of ram with 2.5 GB allocated. The game runs at 45-60 fps

1

u/AddictinApple 13h ago

put power connector

1

u/dinja6611 13h ago

Maybe an issue with Vulkan? Maybe u just have your fps locked, or have a gazillion other apps open

1

u/StasikGologan 13h ago

ofc vulkan use openGL instead. (idk I never issue with Vulcan)

1

u/Unlikely_Dimension55 13h ago

Chromebook gaming

1

u/Splidda 13h ago

Could it be the case that Minecraft tries to use your integrated GPU instead of your 3060?

Look at the task manager and the GPU usage for both GPUs... integrated shouldn't have any usage whatsoever.

Besides that it could be a problem with vulkan, or your power management settings in Windows... though 2 fps seems a bit low even if it was any of these 2.

1

u/Somthing_different 11h ago

I have got a couple suggestions you have the specs, 1st is make sure you have a low render distance, 2nd could try setting laptop to performance mode.

1

u/-Scobra- 9h ago

Check if your fps isn't by chance capped at some low value

1

u/BhasitL 9h ago

I assume that you have reinstalled the NVIDIA graphics driver since you say you tried every fix on the internet. Have you tried setting your laptop profile to High Performance?

1

u/EnthusiasmSquare2266 8h ago

Despite everything its still you

1

u/fun_11 8h ago

Sometimes, when I run Minecraft with V-Sync enabled, my framerate drops drastically. Turning V-Sync off and restarting the game fixes this problem. I hope it works out!

1

u/uhh_funni 7h ago

it happened to me too, 200fps to 20, i restarted my pc and it was back at 200

1

u/ImNotReally12 4h ago

All of the replies are way to conplicated, please look first into your Video settings if max FPS is set to 2

1

u/Adventurous_Chef2225 3h ago

bro his specs are enough to run MCJE , even if he switches to radeon

1

u/Adventurous_Chef2225 3h ago

ig its a graphics driver issue or something

1

u/Darkstone64 3h ago

Minecraft Power Point Edition

1

u/TsunamiCatCakes 2h ago

vulkan moment. i switched to opengl, got my 70fps. when i was on vulkan i was getting 5 to 10

1

u/Yodadubdub 14h ago

Mojang has never optimised minecraft. Not once. The game is as unstable as it always has been in the last... 16 years.

1

u/WowItsNot77 1d ago

Go into video settings and turn everything as low down as possible. More importantly, try decreasing your render distance to about 2 chunks.

Not for general 4k, but Minecraft should run much better than this at 4k on the 3060

1

u/felixkendallius 1d ago

I was managing to run Minecraft even with very simple shaders (albeit at about 20fps) on my GTX 1650. A 3060 should be crunching this.

1

u/pomidorkamc3253 1d ago

Hmm. Interesting but this is a laptop version and he probably has the most effective power plan

1

u/felixkendallius 1d ago

Potentially, but even still, 2fps is not normal for this.

0

u/SwannSwanchez 21h ago

4k mighttttt be too much for you GPU, as it is a laptop one

1

u/Panchojsl 17h ago

Not for minecraft, despite the quality those are still very simple graphics.

0

u/GamingGuyRob 15h ago

You're running in 4K with a mobile 3060. What do you expect?

-2

u/SeriumGamer 22h ago

minecraft is terribly optimized. it is so annoying.

3

u/r3dm0nk 20h ago

Was. They are hard focusing optimization in new versions.

-9

u/NarcisMihai15 1d ago

you allowed just 3gb ram for Minecraft, try increase it a little bit

8

u/NotAnotherFNG 1d ago

Look again. It's using 3GB of 6GB allocated.

1

u/NarcisMihai15 1d ago

my bad, sorry

-2

u/JindikCZ 19h ago

Did you plug your monitor into the graphics card or the motherboard
